Looks like anthracite.

My advice would be that whatever you buy, make sure it's black !

If your not in a smoke controlled area, then you can burn tractor tyres if you want. My area is deemed a smokeless zone, so I have to burn seasoned wood, or smokeless fuel. But when it gets dark,

Is that coal tc mate?

It's coal dust and cement made into briquettes usually 80% coal dust and 20% cement a lot cheaper than coal and gives good heat and last for ages. A lot of old people used to make it for themselves by balling it in their hands.

I just throw the odd big chunk of ordinary coal on with mostly wood it's plenty...coal will hammer your burners regardless of type and it's getting harder to find quality replacement cast grates baffle plates ect. I think the last one i had was made of butter

How do you find out if your in a smokeless area?

Contact your local council. Be a 5 min phone call. Might even have the info on their website, some do.

Save your phone bill and try your council's website. I looked on mine and discovered that I live 60 yards outside the smoke control zone ! The home-made wood burner's coming on a treat !!
