Specialist Rabbiting Dog..

Recommended Posts

I'm breeding some 3/4 whippet 1/4 springers when my bitch comes in season, was going to use a 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy stud, but had a change of heart after seeing some pups to a full beddy out of her litter sister. Should be decent rabbit/ferreting dogs? Personally i'll be keeping one that goes more to the spaniel (if i get any like that?) for some more specialised work, might crash and burn, but you can only try your best?

If their sensibly priced you won't have no trouble shifting the whippety looking ones ,should make good ferreting /fast bushers.

My bitch is quick for a half x spaniel mate, about as fast as an average rabbit, another dose of whippet and they should easily take rabbits, not wanting to much speed myself though, i'd be happy with a heavier set pup, hopefully with more spaniel traits. I'm just breeding for me and a couple of mates, any surplus will go to pet homes.

Whats your half x look like?

What a cracking thread.   I wanted a rabbiting dog, a ferreting companion more than anything I do like my lamping but wanted to concentrate more on daytime work. I knew what I wanted and in time the

I'm probably going to upset someone or other.   But I think if the dog can work the lamp, runs well enough and has a strike.   It's all down to two things - stamina and number of rabbits on the gr

I don't have many pics of her mate, she's only about 18 months old in this one, she's 4 now and filled out a bit, but still athletic/whippety. 16" tts, and a proper grafter, lives to hunt, i have to stop her a bit for her own good sometimes

Sure its been said but i think its a lot more to do with the individual dog than the x or breed.

Also a lot of variables will effect what suits best, from land type, hunting style etc to the owners personality.

I've been out with 2 dogs out of the same litter, and they are like chalk and cheese,so to say what's good (or not) just by what breeds are in there is daft.

If 2 out of the same litter are so different how can you say that a particular cross will be a specialist in anything when the odds of every pup being the same are so massive.

Just pick out of good parents doing what you want educate them ,and hope for the best

I really don't think there is any type that can be called a 'specialist rabbit dog'. Almost any lurcher type can 'really turn it on', with the right owner getting the most from it.

I do think this though, if i had the ground to do some serious numbers again, i'd be requiring two breeds, amongst others, in my rabbiting dog, whippet and saluki. A drop of each in the mix would have me feeling a whole lot more confident rearing my pup. ;)

Funny that cos I'd have neither lol especially not them dreadful shivery whippets blood lol

To be honest Doubleya, i like neither breed as they stand but if it was for rabbits ONLY i'd be happier with a DASH of both in the mix. ;)
