A more up to date rivalry between Sunderland and Newcastle was, I think, in the 70's or 80's, when the "Shelter Deck" ship yard/shipbuilding was awarded to the Wear, purely because of political reasons. Sunderland simply didn't have the skilled personnel, in numbers, to complete the contract, and to the huge embarrassment to Sunderland, had to contract welders, roofers, riggers, etc, from the Tyne yards to bring the contract in on time. They also had to bring in specialist welders who happened to be Native Americans ! The contract was beset by union disputes, which were basically to do with The Newcastle contractors getting such things as "travel money", "digs money", etc, even though they only lived around a dozen mile away !! They never complained about the Red Indian Welders who were getting obscene wages, but then again...... they weren't Geordies !! Many workers in the North East made decent wages from that contract, but it was almost lost because of stupid regional rivalry !

Same can be said for a number of rivalries, like Liverpool and United.. The mill owners in Manchester built the ship canal because they were fed up of paying the ever increasing dock fees that Liverpool were imposing in the goods they were importing and exporting and bypassed the city completely. Likewise Swansea and Cardiff, they have been competitors since the industrial revolution and before and still are today. They were rivals for the honour of being wales capital and in 1998 Swansea voted 'yes' to devolution and Cardiff voted 'no' and they still put the Senedd in Cardiff..

Loads of club rivalries go beyond football West Ham/Millwall rivalry is as strong today as it was 100 years ago......its not just about football its about areas its about schools its about pubs..........pure football rivalries are clubs like Arsenal/Spurs where theres no real history..........If you ask Chelsea fans who their rivals are they,ll say Spurs yet Qpr and Fulham are up the road.........same with Liverpool/Everton/United...................theres rivalries for footballs sake and theirs rivalries that includes football in it.
Would the Spurs/Arsenal rivalry not come from Arsenal upping sticks and moving from Woolwich and onto Spurs patch all them years ago?

Thought they were close,, cheers stig,,, that's the thing with Nottingham,, two football grounds,,cricket pitch,, race course both horse and dog,,and a water sports centre,, all very close,, less than 5 mins in a car to all of them,,, not forgetting poor old Nottingham rugby,, that play at the county ground

Surprised no blades or wednesday fans have piped up lol

No need mate as they are one of the biggest but without a doubt the most passionate rival matches in English football, the whole city shuts down when Wednesday take on the blunts. The winners have bragging rights at work which carry on for weeks, its not just a game its life.

Its only really a rivalry on the pitch........off the pitch Spurs rivalry is Chelsea.....theres no love lost with West Ham either but Chelsea are their rivals....................They will always call Arsenal a south London club because they know it winds them up but if it wasnt for the Seven Sisters Road there would be no reason for a rivalry

one of my old school teachers played rugby for Nottingham, I know that had a thing where they tried to kick a rugby ball from the centre circle at forest into countys ground I cant remember the outcome ..I know with forest n derby some fans wont refer to the others name and I know forest fans other than match day wont go to derby and wont even pass through it ... :D

What you basing that on Max, because you say it is? Is it the oldest, most attended, most talked about in the rest of the country etc? How do you personally define something as 'the biggest?' :hmm:

Max if your going to come up with wild statements like Newcastle - Sunderland is the biggest rivalry in England......Calzaghe is the greatest fighter in history.........and the all time classic....Hartlepool has produced the best boxers in Britain  ........then back them up with something or people will just see them for what they are.....unfounded wild statements !

If your going to try to measure " Rivalry " then I think there are certain things that need to be considered

! The size of the clubs involved

2 the , history , it must be a long standing rivalry

3 The relevance ,it must be of interest to the neutral ,,, a local rivalry that nobody else gives a fk about is just ..well ..local

4 Success ,if its between two successful clubs , then that trumps a rivalry between two perennial also rans ,

ll this is taking for granted that the sets of fans hate each other , because regardless what people think , the level of hatred is probably equal nationwide .

any other criteria for measuring " rivalry " ?

If Aston Villa didnt have 3 other clubs within arms reach they would be the biggest club and have the biggest rivalry............is Spurs or Chelsea didnt have 10 odd other clubs within arms reach they would be the biggest clubs with the biggest rivalries......................these " biggest " clubs in single club cities are funny as f**k :D .........they dont see nothing of their big rivals from one month to the next but its so intense
