Ive run a couple of whippets over the years,i found that with everything in the dogs favour the odd one was added to the bag, when the whippets had been overfaced a few times they had a tendency to open up when running, not a major problem on permission,at other times a liability. My whippets stood at about 19"-20".A mate had a 22" whippet bred from the rag chasers of Barnsley, this dog performed better on Hares but was still to easily overfaced.

Whippet's are bunny dog's anything else they take is a bonus and shouldnt be expected regular imo

From a purely aesthetic view ,if there is a finer sight on God's green earth than a whippet in full flow behind a hare ,then I haven't seen it .

the Whippet Coursing Club must have been wasting their time for 5 decades, should of asked you before they formed   The answer is yes they can and yes they do have enough stamina and no they dont ca

They havent got the stamina for big winter hares...

They are known as the second fastest breed in the world

try watching this to see a whippets stamina

I said they dont have stamina for big winter hare's , and i stand by my word's take a whippet to the fens and put it behind a big winter hare and see what happens

whippets have fantastic stamina and recovery time, but not the pace of other hounds

I find it strange when people say Whippets have no pace !! Pace is their main attribute ! I've had a few of the Non-Ped Racing Type Whippets that took hare regularly, but I doubt if the Ped types can do it regular. Of course they will take the odd one, but can never be considered "hare dogs" ! I think it was Walsh who said a Whhippet was overmatched by a hare, and hare wasn't realy a Whippets legitimate quarry, and he was the Whippets biggest supporter, and heavily involved in the NWCC ! Great dogs, but as I said on the Whippet v Fox thread, yes they CAN do it, by why overmatch them, when there are far better dogs at the job ?

Cheers.

Do whippets ever run the same distance as greyhounds? If so are there times similar?

i dont think you could class track dogs with actual working dogs, i could be wrong but i think the track dogs are trained on sprints rather than the distance a dog would/could run on a hare sometimes...

That's what I meant, do the whippets ever run the distances greyhounds do at tracks

What do you mean by pace..not a dig im just wondering.. as folk most certainly have different veiw's and idea's..my idea of pace is a dog running at speed but not putting everything into it..and running for a long period of time covering a lot of ground with each effortless stride...i have seen the odd grey with good pace and even a whippet x grey but never a pure whippet..as i think there back's and bodies are too small..

i dont believe that whippets dont have enough stamina...pound for pound the fastest sighthound, and their chests are deeper than most lurchers used "to catch regular" , for their size, i have no doubt that a whippet will catch hares regular, more than most lurchers,. down to speep, turning ability and a big chest for quick time recovery, in my opinion !

More than most lurchers....... :icon_eek::rofl:

yeah thats right, because most people on here only ever talk shit, and think their dog is the buisness and catch hares with ease, iand its not the case, obviously there is lurchers out there far better for hares than a whippet.

      **sorry for the double post**
I know I'm probably going to get the piss severely ripped out of me for asking this, but
Has anyone ever successfully trained a deaf lurcher (from two working parents and I own her 4 year old sister who is an awesome little bunny basher.)
Genetically she has potential, but...what do you experts think?
She's not a Double merle by the way, it's extreme piebald/white head. Her vision is perfect

Hi to all, so I've never owned a whippet before and have encountered an irritating habit that got worse in the last month of ferreting and was wondering if anyone out there has had success minimising noise during ferreting?
So he runs prey silently, almost never barks at home so I was very happy going into his first winter, but.... when the ferret slot machine is not paying out fast enough for his liking he yips at the holes he senses are near the underground action. On top of that, if he runs a bolted rabbit to ground again he persistently barks at the hole while constantly looking at me as if to say "get them ferrets over here mate, I've got one for you"
I've a very experienced collie lurcher who is a dream to ferret with but the whippet seems to make no reference to the good stuff he does. Any ideas on managing this?

      Evening all,
I'm lucky enough to have first pick from a friends litter. He’s crossed his Saluki dog with his Collie Bull GH bitch. I’ve only seen videos of the litter as he’s based in UK. Few different characters in the litter, some sit reluctant off in the back ground others play among themselves two are incredibly forward one more than the other.

What key things do you look for when picking a litter? I’ve mostly ran mine on rabbits, reds and some others.

      Go stead,
      oshea
