PC Stephen Mitchell worked for Northumbria police

A police officer was yesterday accused of seven counts of rape and a string of sexual offences.

PC Stephen Mitchell, 41, appeared in court facing 43 charges for offences against 19 women.

All the women are believed to have been suspects in police inquiries, some of them addicted to drugs or homeless.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2007, while Mitchell was serving with Northumbria Police.

The officer was arrested on Monday night after an investigation by the force's professional standards department in conjunction with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

He was suspended from duty after the investigation was launched.

After the allegations first emerged, one of his colleagues said: 'When we heard the news of what had happened, we were stunned.'

Mitchell appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with seven offences of rape, 17 of indecent assault and 19 of misconduct in a public office.

The officer, wearing a black hooded top, white T-shirt and jeans, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

The IPCC said yesterday the investigation remained 'ongoing' and asked anyone with relevant information to contact Northumbria Police.

Mitchell was arrested on Monday night at his parents' home in Glasgow, but the court heard it was not possible to bail him to that address as its jurisdiction only covered England and Wales.

He was therefore remanded in custody until today to enable his solicitor to arrange a suitable alternative.

A police spokesman said: 'A Northumbria Police officer has today been charged with a number of serious sexual offences and misconduct in a public office.

'PC Mitchell, who has served at Newcastle and Northumberland area commands, was taken to a police station in Northumbria where he was charged this morning with 43 offences which are alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2007.'

Hunting Police Officer Steals Saboteur's Property

HSA news release 31st December 1994

In amazing scenes at the Old Berkshire Foxhunt meet at Uffington today, a task force of 5 police officers from Faringdon police descended on saboteurs and bullied them out of the area. The squad was headed by PC Tim Dunning, who is a member of the Old Berkshire Hunt and socialises with their top officials. He has been the subject of many complaints from saboteurs before for his blatantly biased and unlawful actions while policing hunts.

Six members of Swindon Hunt Saboteurs had only just arrived at today's hunt when the squad of officers was called in by hunt secretary Edward Leigh-Pemberton, son of the former governor of the Bank of England and a personal friend of PC Dunning's. The saboteurs had just come off a footpath they had been standing on to watch the hunt and were standing peacefully on the road. The saboteurs, including Rev Bert Jones, a 67-year old United Reformed Church Minister, were astonished as the police

Threatened and harassed them: one saboteur was told by PC Dunning "Any more of this monkey business and I'll have you". The saboteur was not told what crime he was supposed to have committed.

Illegally searched saboteurs and their property: saboteurs, their bags and their vehicle were searched without their consent. The officers refused to give any reason for the search and did not give chits to show the search had taken place as the Police and Criminal Evidence Act requires them to.

Stole a saboteur's hunting horn. PC Dunning took a hunting horn from a saboteur, refused to give any reason for the horn being confiscated, and refused to give the man a receipt for his property. While the police are sometimes empowered to confiscate certain items, the circumstances under which they are entitled to do so are strictly set down in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act - the police actions today fall well outside these regulations and would formally constitute an act of theft.

PC Dunning then told saboteurs they had three minutes to leave the area "or else" and, in an astonishing admission of whose orders he was following, said that any further action "would depend on the wishes of the landowner". The law says that he is employed by the Chief Constable and that any further action is up to the Crown Prosecution Service.

All the saboteurs have said they will be making a formal complaint to the Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police demanding disciplinary action against all the officers involved for their blatantly unlawful actions and demanding that PC Dunning never be allowed to police a hunt again. He is quite clearly incapable of performing his duties impartially or within the law when hunts and protesters are involved. This is not the first time that PC Dunning has been caught out in this way: three years ago he allowed his name and rank to be used in a pro-hunt advert which appeared in national newspapers attacking saboteurs and earlier this year he was filmed assaulting a saboteur and admitting he had done so. It is time he was told his job is to serve the public, not the hunt.

This reminds me of a time a few years back when our little shooting syndicate were asked to come out and stand with the shotguns to thin out a few foxes after the local hunt had passed through. Anyway i was young at the time and i remember a little discussion between the syndicate members of what to do if you are confronted by an Anti.......the reply from one of the members(a firearms officer) will stick with me forever......."Empty your gun, put it in your slip, put it down and leather the c**t"........ :toast:

Police officer faces rape charge

The case against Sgt Campbell was adjourned until March

A serving Strathclyde Police officer has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder and rape of a woman.

Sgt Steven Campbell, 40, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, is accused of attacking the woman at various times between January 1995 and October 2008.

He also faces two firearms charges which date between January 2000 and October 2008.

At the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Turnbull adjourned the case for a further hearing in March.

Sgt Campbell, who is currently on restricted duties, is alleged to have tried to kill the woman at a number of addresses in places such as East Kilbride, Airdrie and an Asda supermarket in Hamilton.

The charge includes claims that he shouted, swore and "uttered threats of violence".

It is said he assaulted the woman in various ways, such as throwing her against a tractor.

'Possessed bullets'

He is also alleged to have thrown her against walls, doors and furniture and compressed her throat which restricted her breathing.

Sgt Campbell is also accused of raping his alleged victim during the same dates.

The charge includes claims that he indecently assaulted her and took indecent photographs of the woman.

It is also alleged that at a farm in Shotts, Lanarkshire, he possessed bullets without holding a relevant firearms certificate or having the permission of Scottish ministers.

Sgt Campbell denies all charges against him.
