A formmer police officer has been jailed for 12 months for stealing two winning betting slips from a dead man. Gambling addict John Fleet stole the slips, worth a combined £59.21 ($96) , from the body of Stephen Lawrence who had died suddenly at his home of natural causes.

Fleet, with Devon and Cornwall Police, was sent to help with the removal of the body and the court heard he took the two slips and cashed them the following day. He was caught when Mr Lawrence’s sister, Diane Adams, later visited the same bookmakers and was told by staff a man had collected her brother’s winnings. The court heard Fleet, who has resigned from the force, then contacted Mrs Adams to try to get her to withdraw the complaint. He also changed the police log to say the incident was dealt with and was closed.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to theft and perverting the course of justice. He was sentenced to two months for the theft and 12 months for perverting the course of justice, to run concurrently.

A retired police officer who conned the benefits system out of more than £16,000 to send his children to private school has been ordered to carry out community service.

Colin Burgoyne, 48, initially legitimately claimed child tax credit to pay for nursery but when his children left he carried on claiming and used the cash to help pay for school fees.

At a previous hearing fiscal depute James O'Reilly told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that first offender Burgoyne scammed £11,341.69 one year and £5,197 the second year.

Burgoyne, from Edinburgh, admitted carrying out the offence between April 6, 2006, and September 5, 2007.

The case finally resolved last month after being ongoing for more than three years. There have been a number of adjournments due to Burgoyne's ill health and also because of injury.

Burgoyne, a police constable, retired from service in April this year.

Mr O'Reilly said: "Burgoyne was working and had been claiming various tax credits including child tax credits to assist with nursery placements. During that period the situation altered and the children were no longer in nursery accommodation and Burgoyne appeared to be using the money to pay for school fees."

Burgoyne, whose time with the police force included at stint at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, was initially accused of scamming £35,662.26 from the benefits system between 2002 and 2007 but the Crown accepted his guilty plea to a lesser amount in a smaller time frame.

His wife Kathleen Burgoyne, 46, was also initially charged but was later dropped from the complaint.

The court heard the matter was brought to light through an anomaly which was discovered through a cross-referencing exercise.

Defence agent David O'Hagan said: "He worked as a police officer for 30 years and has now retired and is receiving a pension.

“He was entitled to the payments in respect of the children but the circumstances changed and the payments went from being applicable to inapplicable and he did nothing to check this or contact the benefits agency and he admits that it was his responsibility to do that.

“He has fairly difficult domestic circumstances - he cares for his wife - who has considerable health difficulties and their four children."

Mr O'Hagan added that the case had also had an impact on Burgoyne's mental health. The court heard that a small amount had been repaid. The lawyer added that Burgoyne was in a position to pay back the rest within a month.

On Thursday, Sheriff Neil MacKinnon told Burgoyne it was a serious offence but that in the circumstances he was prepared to impose community service as an alternative to custody.

He reduced the amount of hours from 200 to 150 because of Burgoyne's guilty plea. He must also pay back HMRC.

A MERSEYSIDE police officer is to appear in court charged with the sexual grooming of a 15-year-old girl.

PC Simon Ferns, 42, who is based at Bromborough, was suspended from duty after the allegations came to light in December.

The investigation was into an alleged inappropriate relationship between the officer and a 15-year-old girl who lived in the Clatterbridge ward area, which PC Ferns patrolled.

The inquiry was carried out by Merseyside Police’s Professional Standards Department and managed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

PC Ferns has now been charged with meeting a child following sexual grooming, an offence under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

He is due to appear before Wirral magistrates on July 8.

It is believed a search of PC Ferns’ house was carried out and items taken away for examination at the time of his arrest in December.

The ECHO understands that it is an isolated incident and the investigation has not revealed any other complaints in respect of inappropriate behaviour by the officer towards other members of the community

A statement issued by the IPCC said: “A Merseyside Police office has been charged with the offence of meeting a child following sexual grooming (contrary to Section 15 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003).

“Simon Ferns, 42, who is a police constable based at Bromborough police station in the Wirral division, has been charged following an investigation conducted by Merseyside Police’s Professional Standards Department and managed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

“The investigation was into an alleged inappropriate relationship between the officer and a 15-year-old girl.

“PC Ferns will make his first appearance at Wirral magistrates’ court on July 8.”

A FORMER policeman has been jailed for three years after passing information to a drug dealer in exchange for a supply of cocaine for his drug-addicted wife.

Mark Bohannan, a 47-year-old former field intelligence officer based in Catford with the Met Police's Territorial Support Group, made 475 checks on police computers over a period of six years for his wife Denise's drug dealer.

As he and his wife were sentenced at Southwark Crown Court today (Mar 12), Mrs Bohannan mouthed to her husband "You're dead" while a relative in the public gallery swore at the judge.

The court had heard that through his contact with Mark Bohannan, drug dealer Syed Ahmed learned information police held on him and his associates.

He was told about which areas the Territorial Support Group would be investigating and on one occasion was informed of an upcoming raid.

Mr Ahmed was also able to discover which of his associates were passing information to the police, the court heard.

Mrs Bohannan, who lived with her husband in Chapel Road, Bexleyheath, was given free cocaine in exchange for the information and on some occasions money changed hands.

The couple were both found guilty of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office following a six-week trial.

Mr Bohannan's lawyer, Michael Bromley-Martin, admitted the former officer's conduct "involved a gross breach of the trust placed in him as a police officer".

But he claimed that towards the end, Mr Bohannan had been working to bring the dealer to justice.

The court heard Mrs Bohannan had been using drugs since 1997 after her mother died and was "vulnerable".

Her lawyer, Laurence Kench, said: "Mr Ahmed was manipulative, he was bullying and he was quite happy to callously take advantage of anyone that he thought could assist him in furthuring his own aims."

Former dancer Mrs Bohannan, aged 56, who came to court with shocking pink highlights in her hair, was given an 18-month jail term.

Sentencing the couple, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith said Mr Bohannan's misconduct had been "appalling".

He told him: "What's quite clear is that you did this because she wanted you to and you were weak enough to give in to her wishes."

The judge added: "Instead of bringing an active and successful drug dealer to justice, you did what you could to help him."
