Paedophile police officer faces jail over sex attacks on five boys

Thursday, March 03, 2011This is LincolnshireFollow

A LINCOLNSHIRE police officer and scout leader who hid a double life as a predatory paedophile faces an indefinite jail sentence.

William Wright, a scout leader and an outwardly respectable officer in the Lincolnshire force, abused at least 16 young boys and a teenage girl before his activities were exposed after a worried parent made a complaint.

Lincoln Crown Court.

Investigations revealed that Wright had set up an MSN account using the identity of a fictitious 13 year-old girl "Jenny Curran" which allowed him to gain access to adolescent boys.

Wright used the false identity to persuade boys he was interested in a relationship with them. He would then ask them to photograph their own private parts and send him the images.

Wright also carried out sex attacks on five young boys aged between just eight and 12.

Even after he was arrested in October 2009 and bailed pending further investigations he moved back to his family in Northern Ireland and carried on committing further offences.

The subsequent police inquiry resulted in over 200 young boys being contacted by officers.

Wright, 23, formerly of Townhill Lane, Bucknall, near Woodhall Spa, admitted a total of 32 charges when he appeared before Lincoln Crown Court yesterday.

The charges included six of sexual assault, eight charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one charge of attempting to incite a child, one charge of inciting a teenaged girl to engage in pornography, 11 charges of making indecent photographs of a child, three charges of possession of indecent photographs, one charge of taking an indecent photograph and a further charge of distributing indecent photographs.

The offences involves victims aged between eight and 17 and occurred between September 2007 and April 2010 including a period before he joined the police as well as offences after he resigned.

Wright had pleaded guilty to 25 of the offences earlier this year, and yesterday admitted the sexual assault charges just before his trial was due to start.

His barrister John Pini QC said Wright accepts he poses a danger to children and faces a lengthy jail sentence.

Mr Pini said: "I concede on his behalf that the finding of dangerousness is inevitable and I will be addressing the court in due course on the basis that an indefinite sentence for the protection of the public is inevitable.

"Mr Wright accepts he needs assistance."

Judge Sean Morris remanded Wright in custody to await sentence on a later date.

Wright is originally from Northern Ireland where he first became involved in the scout movement.

He moved to England to study at the University of Lincoln and continued his involvement in scouting.

After finishing his university course Wright, whose father served with the RUC for 23 years, worked with the probation service before successfully applying to join Lincolnshire Police.

He quit the force in December 2009 while he was on bail.

A former police officer who raped and sexually assaulted vulnerable women he had arrested was jailed for life today.

Stephen Mitchell, 42, who was a constable with Northumbria police, was convicted last November of two rapes, three indecent assaults and six counts of misconduct in a public office. He was cleared of three rapes, two indecent assaults and two counts of misconduct.

Mitchell was given two life sentences today and told he would not be eligible for parole for at least seven-and-a-half years.

The five-week trial at Newcastle crown court heard he preyed on women he met while on duty.

Mitchell, originally from Glasgow, raped and sexually abused heroin addicts, shoplifters and a disabled teenager by offering them help while in custody, then demanding sexual favours afterwards.

He blackmailed one of his victims by claiming she would not be able to get her children back from local authority care unless she complied with his demands.

Following the trial, questions were being asked about Northumbria police's recruitment policies after it emerged Mitchell had been charged with a serious sexual assault while serving in the army in the 1980s.

The charge was subsequently dropped before coming to court in Edinburgh and he was not convicted of any offence. But there is concern about whether the Northumbria force was aware of his past when it accepted his application. He joined the police in 1991 after leaving the army.

During his trial, it emerged that in 2007, the force punished him when it was discovered he had had sex with a woman he had met as part of his duties. But he was not dismissed.

A year earlier, he had been fined three days' wages for looking up his wife's new friends on the force computer after the couple had separated. He was finally dismissed from the force in March last year after he was charged with the serious sexual offences.

One of his victims, a mother of three, now 34, who is a former heroin addict, said he had destroyed her life.

She first met Mitchell when she was arrested on a theft charge nine years ago. When she was released from prison, he offered to help get her children back. He gave her a bag of heroin, then gave her a lift to a shop to buy foil and a lighter so she could take the drug.

The woman said he threatened he would plant heroin on her and ensure she never got her children back if she did not do what he ordered. Mitchell then raped her in his car.

"I am on antidepressants and diazepam because of what he did to me," she said. "I used to wash myself with Dettol because I felt so dirty and now I can't have kids because of the damage that has caused."

Mitchell claimed the women colluded against him after rumours circulated about him. He told one of the victims that nobody would believe a junkie.

Another victim, from Newcastle, was a heroin addict when Mitchell arrested her for shoplifting in 2002. She said: "He took me to the cells and the next thing I knew he came down with a cup of tea for me and a cigarette, which I thought was really strange.

"He came towards me and kissed me on the lips. It was more than just a peck and I was completely taken aback."

When she was begging on the streets, he would repeatedly target her.

She said: "He would come over and start telling me how much he fancied me and how pretty he thought I was. At the time I just thought he was a bit pervy." He would give her lifts and talk about his marriage problems, then try to kiss her, she said.

"It happened about 10 times. I didn't think it was too serious and I went along with it because I felt like he was always doing me favours and I didn't want to tick him off by saying anything."

She added: "I'm pleased justice has been done in my case but there are other charges he was cleared of. At the end of the day it was one person's word against another and the jury had to go on the evidence they were presented with."

Jim Campbell, of Northumbria police, said Mitchell was an "evil and manipulative" man who had lied on his police application form by not revealing the charges in Edinburgh. "There is no place in the police service for such evil and manipulative behaviour," he said.

Campbell added that the Northumbria police counter-corruption unit had been improved since the investigation began. "Had we been aware of his arrests or prosecution, he would never have been allowed to join Northumbria police."

The case had done "horrendous" damage to the force's reputation, he said.

Dogs death Nottinghamshire Pc guilty of cruelty

The dogs were found in the back of Pc Johnson's car

A police dog handler whose two animals died from heatstroke in his car has been found guilty of animal cruelty.

Pc Mark Johnson, 39, left the German Shepherds in temperatures of 29.3C (84.7F) in June last year when parked at Nottinghamshire Police headquarters.

He told Nottingham magistrates he had been suffering from depression and obsessive compulsive disorder when he forgot to check them for seven hours.

He was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £2,500.

After the case, Nottinghamshire Police said there would be internal disciplinary proceedings to consider his future.

District Judge Tim Devas described the incident as "a dreadful error of judgement" and said it had been brought about by an illness that should have been diagnosed and treated properly.

The dogs died in the car last June

The RSPCA, which had prosecuted the case, welcomed the verdict and said that those responsible for animals must be held to account for their actions, no matter what their profession.

Simon Parker, from the RSPCA, said: "Two dogs died unnecessarily, a horrific death, and a conviction was wholeheartedly the right decision today, and I'm thankful for the judge for that.

"Everyone needs to remember how hot cars can get during warm weather. Cases like this - particularly when it's a professional person - should not happen."

The organisation said it accepted that Johnson's care of dogs had previously been exemplary and he had not acted callously.

Heatstroke

He was not banned from looking after animals in the future.

The court heard that dogs Jet, aged seven, and 18-month-old Jay-Jay, died possibly within 20 minutes from heatstroke which would have brought about multiple organ failure.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Davies: "Internal disciplinary processes will now take place"

Johnson, who has served with the force for nearly 18 years, told the court that his medical condition, along with the stresses of the job, had left him seriously ill.

The court was told on 30 June last year, Johnson drove his black Ford Mondeo estate to Nottinghamshire Police's HQ in Arnold, just north of Nottingham.

He arrived just before 0700 BST and had planned to transfer the dogs to a police car but it was off the road as the air conditioning system was being fixed.

He found another car but there were no mats in the back and when he went to find some he became distracted by a police briefing.

Afterwards, he told his sergeant he wanted to discuss some medical issues with him later in the day but he needed time to do his paperwork.

At about 1030 BST he planned to let his dogs out of the car, give them water and allow them to stretch their legs. But he became distracted again by a phone call about a missing person.

At noon, he had a meeting with his sergeant about his problems and it was not until nearly 1430 BST that he finally went to check on his dogs SEVEN HOURS LATER :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek:

Homosexual police officer accused of male rape and sexual assault.

I have heard of bent coppers but this is ridiculous,I wonder if he used his regulation handcuffs, these are the guys/gays who are supposed to uphold the law

A police officer and former Mr Gay UK sexually assaulted three men and raped a fourth while on a Christmas night out with colleagues, a Court heard.

PC Mark Carter, 28, of Station Lane, Birkenshaw, Bradford, is said to have dragged one of his alleged victims by the hair, punched him, bitten his shoulder and raped him in a hotel room.

The alleged rape victim then fled the hotel by a fire escape and alerted a passer-by, a jury at Leeds Crown Court was told yesterday.

The court was told Carter is a gay officer with West Yorkshire Police and a former holder of the Mr Gay UK title.

Sarah Wright, prosecuting, told the jury Carter initially groped two men, whom he knew, in a restaurant in Leeds on December 18, 2009.

He was in the restaurant with colleagues enjoying a Christmas celebration, she said.

It was alleged he touched one man on his bottom and groin with both hands.

The party then left the restaurant and the defendant went to Bar Fibre, where he allegedly touched a third man, who he also knew, on his groin and asked him if he wanted oral sex, the prosecutor said.

She told the jury the defendant then went to the Loft Bar in Queens Court, Leeds, where he met a fourth man and they ended up walking back to the Etap hotel in the city centre.

Miss Wright said CCTV images would show the pair cuddling and leaving the bar walking hand-in-hand.

“They walked to the Etap Hotel in Leeds where the defendant had booked a room. The complainant says he assisted the defendant because he had cramp and difficulty walking. He said he put his arms round him because he was cold,” the jury was told.

“Once at the defendant’s room, the complainant was to tell police that the defendant opened the door and dragged him into the room by his hair.”

Miss Wright said the complainant was punched in the face as he tried to pull away from performing a sex act on the police officer.

Carter then went on to rape the man, the jury was told. “The defendant persisted even though the complainant told him to stop. At some point the defendant bit the complainant’s shoulder,” Miss Wright said.

She told the court the complainant showered and managed to escape as Carter went into the shower after him.

She added: “As he was in the shower, the complainant hurriedly got dressed, stuffing his socks into his pocket before fleeing from the room, down the corridor and out of the hotel via a fire escape.

“CCTV images show him leaving the room, running along the corridor and down the stairwell.”

The court was told the complainant had injuries consistent with homosexual intercourse.

In interview, Carter said the incident in the restaurant was “done in jest” and he denied the allegations made by the two other men.

He claimed all the activity in the hotel with the fourth man was “consensual”.

Carter denies three counts of sexual assault and two rapes.

The trial is expected to last eight days.

THE future of Mansfield cop Tony White now lies in the hands of 12 men and women charged with deciding whether or not he indecently assaulted four teenage girls.

THE future of Mansfield cop Tony White now lies in the hands of 12 men and women charged with deciding whether or not he indecently assaulted four teenage girls.

The jury went out in his trial this lunchtime (Wednesday).

The alleged victims told Derby Crown Court that Pc White, famed for his part in the capture of notorious killer the Black Panther, assaulted them while on camp with his Marine Cadet Corps.

They claim they were assaulted on various occasions during the summer of 1996 in the Isle of Wight, Pleasley Vale and Clumber Park.

The court was told thatr alcohol was available at the camps, that the girls were sometimes drunk and that sleeping arrangements were mixed sex.

But addressing the court for the first time on Tuesday, Pc White, of Shakespeare Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse, strongly denied the claims.

He said: "I did not do it, I did not continue to do it, I never did it."

Ironically, Pc White said the sleeping arrangements were out in place to guard against the very same times of allegations he was now facing.

He also told the jury that with the consent of parents, all the cadets were allowed upto two cans of weak lager to guard against them getting drunk on liquor smuggled in.

The court also heard from White s ex-wife Carol, police colleagues and cadets who spoke in support of White.

Christopher Thompson (22), now a serving soldier in the Army, said he never suspected White was interfering with female cadets.

He said: "I am what he has made me today. He id loyal and honest, he has made a lot of bad kids off the street good."

Summing up, Judge Grenville Styler said: "You must be sure that the person named in court is telling you the truth about what happened. If you are anything less than sure, then it is your duty to acquit. There are no grey areas, we have to resolve the issue."

A Nottinghamshire policeman praised for catching a notorious serial killer has been jailed for three years for indecent assault.

Tony White, 50, who was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for overpowering the notorious serial killer Donald Neilson in 1975, was sentenced at Derby Crown Court.

He was found guilty of six charges of indecent assault on 15 November.

He gave years of valuable service to the community, but there was a darker side to his character

Judge Granville Styler

The indecent assaults involved four teenage girls and took place at a cadet unit White ran in 1996.

Judge Granville Styler said White had committed "a serious breach of trust".

The judge said: "He gave years of valuable service to the community, but there was a darker side to his character.

"The young women he abused had treated him as a father figure, but he had still abused them."

Cherry brandy

A group of residents from White's home town of Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, protested outside the court at the "miscarriage of justice".
