  3. Hello Ianesra, I totally agree that many people keep all type of Raptors but very rarely Sparrowhawks; more so (Muskets) due to being so delicate and immensely difficult to manage and train. Our time with both Muskets and females have proved to be some of our most enjoyable times within our life.
  4. Hello all Falconers, Just a few questions regarding certain books. Has anyone got or read a book called: A Merlin for me by John Loft? Also has any falconers read or have in their possession J.G.Mavrogordato's ( A Falcon in the Field)? I have a great interest in book collecting, not just falconry books, but all books relating to birds, dogs, fox hunting, big game hunting and basically all natural history books. I have listed certain titles that may interest some members on this particular forum. Hope you all have good sport with whatever birds you keep and fly
  5. Hello Archie, Just replying to your post regarding the (West Norfolk ). My brother has told myself to mention that he knew Jim Wing well as he was Grahame and Tony Wings father. Did Jim die of cancer? I can now recall Grahame going to visit with his father in Norfolk when he was ill. That's when Grahame was at the South Durham. Like I have said previously, I have many happy memories regarding that wonderful part of the world. I met keepers, landowners and some very good fox hunting people in that area. We went to a friends wedding in Kilmarnock in Scotland and Tony Wing was at the wedding; he
  6. Normally around here they avoid large broad-leaf woodland and favor of spinneys or tree lined tracks. the main criteria seems to be being able to see anything coming before it sees you. once the young are able then theres no hiding the nest as the noise is unmistakable as it the mess Lol Hello Paulus, You will be aware that the mutes and down, plus feathers are a tell-tale sign that a nest is occupied. However, It has been the downfall of many a keepers gun through the recognition of feathers, down and the mutes which are generally splashed over surrounding branches or any type of groun
  7. Many members will already be aware that through certain previous posts about my love for the (Sparrow hawk). I don't want to be seen to be going over old ground once again. However, with more new members continuing to grow, I thought it a good idea to share some of my interests with this particular bird. I have in particular favoured the (Shortwings), Accipiters over the Falconiformes. Although I do love the falcons and any other raptor for that matter. Some other closely related birds to the Spars are the larger cousin the (Goshawk) and other Accipiters the Shikra and the Sharpe Shinned Ha

  10. Hello to everyone today, Hoping everyone is okay and life treats you all just fine. For myself I haven't been to good recently, however, when I'm painted into a corner I always come out fighting."Quitting isn't in my dictionary of thought"! Just a short message of words to any interested parties. I have noticed several people on site regarding the photographs they have taken. Many have been very good, so I'd like to know if anyone would like to come and photograph any (Nightjars) this breeding season with myself. I think (Bell) is interested, but if a
  11. Hello Honey Bee, I read your introduction with interest on certain aspects. Regarding the dogs. My attention was caught when you mentioned you had a Caucasian Ovcharka. For myself I do of course love terriers first, and I mean all terriers. Some people may wrongly think that I have no time for black terriers, coloured terriers or anything that isn't a Jack Russell. That would be incorrect due to myself seeing many other different terriers which have been good working dogs underground. Apologies, back to the Ovcharka, a friend of mine who lives in the Netherland ne
  12. Just replying to your message. Just a short question. Was it just a business relationship between Phillip and yourself, i.e. Fox hunting or did a friendship develop? Many people have mentioned it to myself before regarding is so-called miserable nature. But I never found that to be the case. Some of the old boys involved with hounds came from the old school attitude towards people, and you could never change them. However, I respect people and treat people in way I'd be expected to be treated. When was your involvement with him and was you doing the terrier work at the York and Anisty South un
  13. Hello Keego, I will send you a contact number in a private message.
  14. Hello again, My mistake regarding Phillips position at the York and Anisty South, my brother would have known better he has followed more packs than myself and has a greater knowledge regarding hound packs and hunting with hounds. To some people Phillip seemed to be somewhat miserable when trying to approach him and engage in certain topics of conversation. We never found that to be the case, we had some excellent times together within our shared interests. I can remember taking him to the Rydal hound show many years ago and we all got rather drunk. That evening we all went
  15. Apologies to all readers, I think it would have been a good idea to list them in certain order. Nowadays down to many unhappy events I'm not at all like former times, so apologies once again. Also mentioned in another post about the Ian Newton book about Finches, of course the offer still stands. Unfortunately the response hasn't been too great. "Funny that is for sure"! Regards again, Lutra....
  16. Hello all readers, Not wishing to boast but I have lost count of how many packs I have followed over the years, but I will mention just a few that I have followed more than others. Some of my favourite packs have been in the shires. I followed the Vale of Belvoir for years with my brother and a great farming friend from Tideswell in Derbyshire, Frank Noble. Then with Frank being a farmer in Derbyshire we proceeded to follow the (High Peak Harriers) and did I have some fun with the (Antis)! However, that is another story! Days spent with our local pack, the 'South
  17. Hello Benjamin, It was good to hear that you are a fellow hunter from Norway, it is a beautiful country. I have a really good friend over in your part of the world, his name is Torin- Ed Farstad and he likes to hunt also.He has visited myself on many occasions and he's a great guy. Many years ago I travelled to both Norway and Sweden by myself and found the experience both exhilarating and a place I could relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery also. Benjamin, Will you be coming to England in the future? If so just send myself a message and I would be willing to help i
  18. Hello all readers, Hoping life's treating everyone just fine. Just a very short message of words. Are there any Falconer's who have read, or got in their collection any of J.G. Mavrogordato's books? Also another good book is by John Loft, an experienced falconer who has flown with great success the Sparrow hawks; and his book is called A Merlin For Me. It would be a pleasure to hear from falconer's who have an interest in such books, and to any budding collectors.
  19. Hello Doug, You will be welcomed by many true, genuine dog and fieldsports people on the hunting life forum. Good to hear that you are from Australia as I have some good friends over there. One friend who has been here on many occasions actually resides in (Adelaide) and he hunts Kangaroo.I am awaiting his reply to my requests of certain Kangaroo hides I need for making certain type Falconry equipment. How far are you from that particular location? Hope to hear from you about life in Australia. Regards Lutra.
  20. Hello to all readers, unfortunately no sleep again and I am going back to my nocturnal ways like in former years.Sometimes it can be a strange experience when everyone else seems to be sleeping. Sometimes the distraction of a ticking clock can interrupt a person's thoughts. That's when one starts to thing about memories gone by. My usual ramblings regarding that somewhat elusive, mystery and enigmatic bird the (Woodcock). How I Iove those birds"! They never cease to amaze myself with their cryptic colouring just like the Nightjar employs also. Regarding shooting. To be honest I have only ever
  21. you need to re-size them to below 2Mb per image. this can be done in most image editing software or "paint" in windows. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/resize-a-picture-using-paint Apologies I incorrectly typed above words.
  22. Hello Treehands, I haven't got that book to be honest.
  23. Thank you Katchum, Not very sharp at the moment due to terrible insomnia. I don't like posting when one is tired as mistakes can quite easily occur. Thanks once again Katchum.
  24. Favourite British bird and why. Needs to be good reason why and if possible your true account of what has happened with your favourite bird in question. The Book is called (FINCHES) By Ian Newton. I have several copies but the one in question is paperback but fully acceptable as a reading copy. It belongs to the ever increasing collection of the well-known (New Naturalist Series by Collins). Contents: Pages: Author's preface
