  1. Great looking pups and she looks great, credit to ya mate. Had a line of pig dogs that used to drop massive litters. Had two drop within three days of each other, 19 pups in the first and 20 in the second. My yard was hectic for two months
  2. in fairness these lurchers aren't tracking wounded game, they're casting out to find a something, Some of these places are barren as hell, like hunting on the moon so the dog puts in a lot of work before it even gets near to the quarry. most of them seem to be purpose bred from worker to worker with collie/hound/bull in various amounts - although I hear GWP blood is being introduced lately Yeah there's a bit of pointer blood being introduced here in Oz too, especially in pig dogs. My mate's best dog is a staghound x pointer, at 5 years old it's caught an unbelievable amount of pigs al
  3. Mate of mine breeds foxhounds for trailing deer. They tend to be a bit stockier to handle the thicker forests they need to work but still they impress me every time I see them work. All day and night those hounds will go without looking for a breather
  4. cheers got to get them fit now so plenty of walks out for them get me fit as well as got the 2 spaniels and the pups as well to get ready for the season You'll be flat out getting all them ready but spoiled for choice when the season comes round mate, good luck
  5. Nice looking type there mate, should go well for you
  6. Better they're gone than killing stock. Still it's a pity
  7. How old are your dogs when you start turning them out on average size pigs? I started mine at 8 to 9 months. This last pup needed a little longer and she was 10 months old when I let her run in and catch with another dog. I'm about the same, this one took a bit longer as she was a bit silly in the head until she was 11 months. In terms of catching their own pigs, I expect them from the first time they get stuck in there to hunt out with the older dogs and learn off them. Then it's just a numbers game until it clicks
  8. Yeah I can't wait for her to start to find on her own. In Australia we expect every dog to find and run down their own pigs
  9. Great feeling when a dog gets stuck in on their first pig! My pitty bitch just got on her first pig and she latched on to the snout of a good sow and didn't let go til I called her off. Would've preferred an ear but I ran her with my mate's dog who hit it first and I think in the excitement she just latched onto the first part she could get a hold of
  10. That's the one. Yeah a lot of mastiff x's and bull x's for pigs, mostly the stags for fast game. Yeah I hear ya, I moved from one side of the country to the other only 6 months ago
  11. Doubt it since I live on the other side of the world
  12. My pup at the moment was the same, honestly I tried albeit half heartedly to get rid of him when he was three months. Howling, pissing his bed a couple of times a day, hardly put weight on and chewed EVERYTHING. Now at 8 months he's a pleasure to own, well behaved, fully stock broken, just starting to switch on to game and will be starting on the bunnies in a couple weeks. Can't wait.
  13. How would we go to getting one of them tried n tested stag hound types sent over then ? It would cost a fortune. A member on here has one, mostly deerhound with a touch of english bull. It's been trained and used for pig only. Get it over a fast type fen coursing bitch and you might be onto something. I can't remember his name but I think he posted in one of the more recent deerhound threads. 4k is hardly worth it when you have so many good dogs in the UK already. Surely though a dog that was bred for hundreds of years to consistently take deer would be the best dog to take deer you
  14. I wouldn't go for anything that didn't have deerhound in it. I have what we in Oz call a staghound or roo dog, which is deerhound x gh in varying mixes with some other bits and pieces down the line and I know of numerous dogs from the same line that have taken fallow regularly (albeit they were owned by irresponsible people, It's illegal here too). A good, honest deerhound of the old style is sound, fast, agile for it's size, enduring and have a temperament that can't be beaten IMO
  15. Looks like the darker patches will go solid and he'll be tri colour. Regardless he's a nice looking pup, all the best with him
  16. Good write up mate, that's what it's all about.
  17. where was this? not Britain. Are you trying to be smug?Australia. Not really, just making a comment on the difference. I'm not taking him out though bugger that. We've been getting hit pretty hard by the antis, especially the fellas hunting pigs with their dogs. Won't be long and we may be dealing with the same. I can't imagine the crap you blokes have to put up with The thing about oz is it is so vast. What ever they ban how will they know what you are upto? Very true, where I used to live was very remote, about 200km from Uluru as the crow flies. I could do whatever I wanted and people would
  18. Wicked video mate, loved it. I hunted on horseback a lot when I was working on cattle stations shooting kangaroos for dog meat, can't beat getting out with a good horse between your legs I reckon. Always wanted to try working my dogs off horseback
  19. Some of the older roo dog/staghound lines over here in australia throw black and tan occasionally too.
  20. Had a pig dog jump off the back of the ute at 50km/h and tear his shoulder. I couldn't afford the surgery so I shot him. Vet said the nature of the tear meant he only had 50% chance of it being usable. I still regret not giving him a chance
  21. I hunt year round here in Oz but if I'm having a break a walk for an hour a day helps them work out any stiffness or soft tissue damage and keeps em fit and happy
  22. Nice work mate she looks a handy type
  23. I'm quite happy with our "winters", bit less uncomfortable having a night on the lamp
  24. I would never imply anything to the contrary. After all, all your criminals got sent my way didn't they? Just saying I can't imagine not being able to go out and hunt my dogs. I still remember the rage my granddad went into when they made hunting roos with dogs illegal
