  1. only way around it is to keep the type of dogs that wont run in on old Brock...no chance in court. if there was no sett within 200 yards you might be able to argue your case but i doubt it. worse still they take the dogs...even the old hound with one tooth in its head. kev-medlock crew
  2. some good points boys...but it is not a fact that a hound or spaniel is better covert dogs than a ter-rier, dont be getting giddy.a rough shooters dog is not the same as a bushing dog which is why they are called flushing dogs whereas a bushing dog can find and hunt ,or find and catch, different styles of hunting. spaniels are decent dogs but a terrier can find in cover as well as a spaniel, plus they hunt, they mark, they catch and they work below. many of the hound crosses can match the terriers but i have yet to see a spaniel that could do so. that doesn't mean there aren't any... just
  3. everyones seen a bully type snorting down a rabbit hole but they are catch dogs not hunting dogs, name one top breeder of bull terriers who bred for nose? ive seen bulls flush hare, kill rats and chase rabbits and its good to see but dont get giddy. bulls that do hunt, hunt mainly threw bodily presence, they are catch dogs, they have to lift their heads to catch sight of the quarry...so they can chase their quarry...they might catch up to it ...they could get a hold, which is a catch dogs job...none of which could be achived if the dog had its nose stuck to the floor like a beagle!
  4. you tube...a k c beagle field trails, them yanks know their beagles. do you want to find and flush, or find and hunt ? if you want a hunt the beagles your man! kev-medlock crew
  5. perfectly normal...terriers bay on contact, a scent only seconds old will set a terrier off
  6. if you want to understand why you would want fast bushing dogs check out podencos, the bigger type are 26-30 inch, hunt like hounds, flush like bushing dogs and run like lurchers. the small ones are terriers...but the middle sized are like heavy built whippets. andaluz podencos range in size from 15 -22 inch, bat-eared, fast but wouldnt match a whippet, they pack up, give voice, top work-rate and catch pure rabbits...and retrieve! they work rocky scree and gorse...whole hillsides of gorse. they are fast enough to keep the rabbit in view is an important point, and that once one marks a
  7. skycat...i also hunt huge bramble beds and i find it interesting that in the world of spaniels it is an excepted fact that the best dogs for working massive, dense bramble are the big burly 20-22 inch springers. yet in the bushing dog game anything over sixteen inch is considered a bit too big? pre-ban most foxes are caught by terriers in cover by pushing the fox off its run, if charlie knew that dogs were closing in from both ends of a run he had to squeeze into the sides, into the tangle and squeeze and push its way threw.here is where a big strapping terrier can push behind even
  8. a bushing dog and a all rounder are two different dogs to me. i read on this site recently a description of a bushing dog that was identical to a field trial spaniel ? drop to shot ? a bushing dog to me is a dog that works in a bobbery pack, its job is finding in rough cover and working in a pack. i dont train my dogs, sit, stay, retrieve etc. they are kept as a pack, i wont have ignorant deaf dogs, mine are all obedient without being properly trained up. an all-rounder is a different sort again, working cover is a part of its work but not all of it. they do need training up. you can bu
  9. if anyone wants to see the real deal sealyham, you tube british pathe sealyham terriers, the captin himself, lucas with a huge pack out, 40-50 dogs. kev-medlock crew
  10. p s..bonny pup,in fine fettle...he does look like a typical moody.
  11. original minshaw...i think...was rusty, or sandy, 22inch, tan rough coated dog, he had super stamina and mated to collie x greyhound produced the invincable blue, rusty carried kerry blue blood moody minshaws are like a vary rugged, tough line of collie lurcher...not the fastest of dogs but fast enough and noted for their stamina, mainly kept by vary active heads and mainly a lamping strain. like any strain instantly recognizable. older strain were big heavy 80lb plus dogs, see a lot smaller type these days. many having 5-6-7 lines to old blue. the line was started by vic minshaw who use
  12. i dont buy from non-working stock, the man hancock does not hunt, his stock dont hunt...his pups do go to working homes, and some do o. k. but i would rather buy from out and out workers. collie x greyhound lurchers are old school, many are now sick of bull x and saluki crosses saturating the market and are looking for the older type dogs. breed your own i say,or get off men that use their dogs and mate together their best two dogs, tested over seasons of hard running...no time for commercial breeders. i have seen hancock dogs work, some were alright, not great but decent. all were 3
  13. why would you travel the country to buy a pup from a strain you no nothing about? so far you only like the image of the plummer terrier...i did until i saw some out huntin... buyer beware kev-medlock crew
  14. gread film, great haul...some of the poorest rat dogs ive ever seen.take some ratters next time.
  15. first unwritten law of venerie...respect your quarry and its breeding season.
  16. keep posting but why are most not getting threw? on prey drive i keep asking what is it? no-one seems to no, if it means natural hunting instinct there is nothing you can do to help ,or improve it. a dog as it or doesnt. if you think terriers going to ground is a fault dont keep terriers, near impossible to keep working bred terriers above ground, not to worry, the earth may be empty, the dog might stay but five minutes, it might bolt within minutes...etc. biggest problem is running the type of terriers that will drop in and stay forever, no chance of being called out. ev

  18. mr breay and buck said they didnt use a drop of bull blood, sparrow said use it as a out-cross every 10 generations. nuttall said the bull terrier needs a drop of patterdale not the other way-around. good bull terrier is a good out-cross, as many benifits, but i think a terrier should work at its quarry, inculding voice, bull cross are often to hard.work their quarry differently, i prefer the true terrier style. a local lad as a chocolate patterdale, 15 inch, smooth coated, just looks like a small staffy, its a stunning dog, some would argue that there is too much bull in them alr
  19. all historic records say the terriers job is to bolt or contain under -ground quarry, this means a bolting dog is as valid as a digging dog. i think bolting dogs should be judged against other bolt- -ing dogs.not seen as lesser to the harder terriers. as for bushing and ratting etc, we have art work, drawings, paintings etc going back hundreds of years showing terriers rabbiting and ratting, its a bit late now to say that terriers should only do earth -work. when is the last time you saw an advert for ratting terriers, some people keep terriers mainly for ratting, others want to
  20. jagd are all-rounders, many patterdales are versitile but the backbone of the patterdale are digging dogs, the real old black stuff were hardcore staying dogs. a good russell, or a decent fell terrier will match any jagd for the title of the complete terrier, borders shouldnt be under-rated either. i dont think the breed matters as much as the dog itself, you could find a decent dog in any working strain of terrier. i dont see breaking a pup to ferret, hawk or mink as a problem...but obviously you couldnt hunt mink kev-medlock crew
  21. sealyham...no thanks, £900 per pup...no thanks, prefer real terriers. seen footage of this pack on river taw, never caught ...read two articles on them and in both they never caught a single rat, still good fun was had by all. heard it all before, the lucas, the bedlington, the airedale..now the new sen-sation...all money terriers.dont believe the hype. kev -medlock crew
  22. most important quality in a bushing dog is natural hunting instinct, then work-rate and indepen---dance, or self reliance. after that nose , coat , size etc.
  23. top class terrier is on a par with any spaniel or hound cross...of course they will go to ground. thats a bonus not a fault,
  24. in spain pups of 8-10=12 week old hunt, chase and catch rabbits...in pens, they catch but only have milk teeth. vary different to how we bring our dogs on but they do end up with vary hard working, and obedient dogs. prey drive...i know what prey means, i know what drive is but prey drive makes no sense, its a term used by trainers and dog experts..dog shrinks...where there's dogs there's fools with money...the proper way to say it is prey motivation because they use the word drive to mean motivation. prey drive, food drive, aggression drive, sex drive, defense drive...what a load of
  25. firstly stop taking it so serioues, next few days just go for a country walk...start again...terriers don't need to touch scent or see game to enter cover, good terriers live in cover, hard to keep them out...but your dog sounds like it might need to view a rabbit or two. spot a rabbit, take the dog over and watch its reaction, if its got a grain of sport in its body it will react...build on it, another dog will help but isn't vital...mainly take a chill pill. if the dog views 20 rabbits and still isn't keen that's the time to worry. kev-medlock crew
