  1. bull types don't hunt by nose, they hunt by drive, bodierly presence,no nose required. they do touch scent but don't rely on it.some bulls will pass cover, cover shy even, but once they see game they will smash threw a wall let alone nettles ! most bulls are useless, most staff's wont hunt. american have a stronger hunting instinct. every now and again you hear of bull terriers that hunt and some are vary good but these are the exceptions. coats are too thin, the violent ones you don't need in a pack. like a lot of lads i wouldn't want a pure spaniel but i think they are a goo
  2. don't understand the role of a Airedale on a otter hunt? if you have hounds and earth dogs were do Airedale s fit in ?, also if Airedale s are of hound ancestry why have they turned out a air scent-er. can you hand on heart say they work thick low lying bramble ,or huge bramble beds as well as the smaller terriers. do they guard ?
  3. it would be harder to stop a terrier from hunting rabbits than getting one started, just get the dog out and let it hunt.
  4. what is prey drive ? keep hearing about prey drive, new " in word" but what exactly does it mean, is it out of a plummer book or what ?
  5. there is no comparison between spaniels and terriers, spaniels are not in the same league. they have great work rate, all weather dogs and great drive but that's it. terriers think and hunt by themselves, they are independent. spaniels are robotic put a spaniel in a huge bramble bed and it will come out several times just to see where its owner is. terriers will work all the way threw. most spaniels are over giddy, to sensitive and as thick as a brick. yes, they can be trained but that is obedience not intelligence. not hunting intelligence. i like spaniels but they lack something, i have
  6. if your going to breed spaniel x pointer remember the high head carriage of the pointer will dominate the lower head carriage of the spaniel.
  7. had five griffons and several crosses ten years ago, superb hounds. regular stayed on a fox for over an hour. hunted mainly on waste land, drive and non-stop work rate. too much for some. all off valentines stock, 16 inch on average, vary hard going, good voice. beat beagles, welsh, fell, harrier, teckles or foxhounds for finding foxes. true hunting hounds, hunt all day with no huntsmen ! in our area rabbit, hare and deer are vary low in numbers, few distractions for the pack. however they would hunt all game, rat, rabbit, game birds etc. but they would always have fox as 1st priority.
  8. many photos seen in England show the fox terrier being the most popular terrier in France. is this true ? have you used fox terrier ? are they good or poor workers ? why do you prefer jack Russell's ? do you use your terriers only for digging and bolting, earth work or also as flushing dogs ?
