  1. Cheers Stabba, I missed this somehow, I am learning a lot about dogs, reading etc. Both dogs are very trainable, the smaller patchy bitch seems to have more drive, completely different and likely they will work well together. She is on a raw food diet about a rabbit a day. Out of interest does anyone feed their dogs pigeon? She relishes them.
  2. Sorry to head about the loss, but good pups, good to see the breed being carried forward, though it is a lot to get my head around the different breedings etc.
  3. I do like these posts, more or less made.my mind up I am going to get a pure bread whippet reading them.
  4. Had a dog that was too slow but obsessed with hares, got her at the age of 11. Didn't know what to do to be honest, but every time you were out and one got up it was good bye to her for an hour or more. You'd just see her running along the horizon.. yip.. yip... the hares would just bound away like Pepe la Pew, turning for a look every now and again when they got a lead. Got stolen one winter, put the word out and someone rang up, she was 15 miles away trying to cross a canal heading in the right direction. Like a boomerang that dog.
  5. I like those, cracking dogs. Is that pup in the third from last pic a patterdale/plummer from an advert recently?
  6. What do you gain over a 12? Surely it would be better to alter your cartridge choice?
  7. A waste? No comment is made as the where they went, all look to be adults. Not many places you could do that.

Cracking, something about working cover and not knowing what is coming out.

    My Lad

He has caught my eye in a few posts and is exactly what I am hoping mine comes out like. There are the dedicated working dogs, beagle/spaniel/terriers and I like my random terriers for this job. In theory he would make a good cross for mine as a replacement if she makes the grade, but that is pie in the sky and a long way off.
  10. Nice story that one and some proper working dogs with thought in their breeding.

    My Lad

I used to hace something similar. She died of old age a couple of years back. 1/2 jack russell the rest is open to guess, the dam came back in pup from Ireland. She coulf get through nearly amything and went all day. As a young dog she'd be after a ruddy hare for an hour Randomly I just measured that collie/spaniel with her today and she is 22 tts shoulder, so the brindle was about 19-20 tts. My new bitch is 12 tts and 4 months old. Not
  12. I had to snap a lead on quick, she was looking to go. A few protective ewe's gave her cause for concern. Was impressed, she entered cover of her own accord following the scent of a rabbit that went in. Gave some encouragement and left her to explore for as long as she wanted. That picture with the bullocks will make me smile for a long time yet.
  13. All training has been done on her own, the other lives with my dad and brother. But it funny how quick they forget. Did some stock breaking today came across some cade lambs: All good Didn't think so much of some equally friendly bullock calfs
  14. Unlucky, how'd it happen?
  15. Their noses are exceptional for their ages I have to say, I'll stop the posts for now until I get some working pic's in a few months time. I am putting a lot of training into her, but she is going very deaf on scent/sight so I am hoping to break this. On her own she is perfect.
  16. for what bushing is I have seen a lot of mongrels out and about that have the go in them, the owners call it bad behaviour.
  17. That is a cracking dog. It looks ready to go in every picture.
  18. Nice dogs, mum bought a chiuahua/russel years ago, it's head was too small but it worked well in cover. Flushed well and spoke.
  19. you put your deposit down mush? I have I've ordered three so that I can see which abusive methods work the best I really want to try a new technique out, it involves firing a nail through it's paws into the floor and kicking it in the face until it passes out from screaming OK that made me laugh

  21. I get the idea of getting her to bush and the signs are good. But I was wondering how far people get training them to retrieve? I know that if I wanted a dog that would retrieve I should have got a spaniel and I don't expect gundog obedience. She is 15 weeks old, I can send her blind short distances now to fetch things and she retrieves well, but drops it a couple of yards short. I tried to get her to bring it to hand, but she almost stopped and I had to go back to the beginning. I also took her out with the air rifle to get some scents and confidence. I've sent her for a couple o
  22. Like you say you can't ever walk out and pick one up. But I do like it when a random cross cones good. I've seen a westie that took a few rats. Good for a westie is the best way of putting it.
  23. No point being macho it's a pup, I don't care who you are we all as soft as sh*te with a new pup She's a friend and company, just making sure she trusts me and building on her training for now. I'll try and get some pics up of training as I am hitting a couple of problems I've had in the past that I have never learnt how to correct.
