I only just found this out the other day. I had some good shooting years ago after loading some sweepings into fert spinner and putting it over half an acre of set aside stuble.

Sure Fire Way To Bag Plenty Of Crows?
Tozer replied to andrew macmillan's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
I agree with the hide thing, I've done good numbers withte air rifle. The come in and mob the first one dropped then you have got until you miss one. With the shotgun the main thing is getting the hide right. After that I put out every bird shot. With a big pattern you 'll see them turn from the horrizon. At least my way. They don't come in to land like woodies though. -
God no, just made me smile trying to picture the logistics.

Lets See Pictures You Would Love To Get Framed

He had to guess at the feet but my missess got this one done for me last Christmas. It was just a bloke at work, all in pencil. -
For pest control this scares me, it is worrying to see it become the norm. I do the odd days labouring, shifting bales etc but thats just swings and roundabouts.

I accept that, but these have doubled on what was there any time of year, which is nice. I've been knocking half a dozen a week over with the air rifle just to keep the land owner happy. I went and had an ask at some land I used to pigeon shoot. It always has pockets, ideal for flushing half a dozen in the winter. This year they have made visable dents in the wheat. A lot of muntjac moving about too. Not seen many but a lot of sign.

yeh good read , not got salukis or xs but the deep chest myth , he blew that out of the water for any type of running dog really my dog a big heavy type lurcher not particular tucked up or deep chest, but got good stamina and quite fast for his size run all night long !I took a lot of it as applicable to other sighthounds, he makes a lot of comparisons. I like the fact he says out right you can't tell a good dog from bad by looking or muscle structure and confirmation.

They seem to be shifting around a bit. A couple of areas I used to see the odd one have a fair few and others I used to bank on seem to be depleated. There isn't massess of young rabbits though.

A very good read that. Answered a lot of questions.

I'm mqking one up with some para cord for my terrier. Just hit months and decided everything I have taught her is rubish and it's more interesting elsewhere... On the plus side just found my lurcher. A cracking breeding and the next deer dog: http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/viewtopic.php?t=94622

I guess the jist I was mulling over (after too many beers) last night was putting together a list and reasoned argument. I am not the first.

I was pretty wrecked last night, but I think the fb/youtube ones are the ones with the image that peoplw have in their heads when it comes to dog hunting. It this that I am thinking off when it comes to larger deer etc. I was bought up if you are not going to eat it or it isn't eating something you eat don't kill it.

I will say you can take sollice in the fact that most of the conservationists end up selling their souls writing environmental risk assessments for oil companies etc. allowing them to destroy the countryside.

OK this could end badly, But I have taken 10 years out since I was really out there in the fields. It is only the last 3 I have picked up a gun and got a dog. I fully believe mink, fox, squirrel and mice (stupidity in law writing!) Should be put back on. I think I am not alone with every man who likes runnings dogs, wants to be able slip a dog on a hare without looking over my shoulder. I have some concerns on deer; nike airs and idiots detract from it done well. But to add smaller muntjac and cwd non native as they are can't be a problem bushing with dogs etc. It goes

Nearly Another Load Of Feathers To Mow Up
Tozer replied to paulus's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I decided a few years back that I have many close encounters with wildlife and that I'd take a camera for a while. It wasn't anywhere near as easy as I hoped! Good pictures, it takes some patience at times. -
I originally had ideas of breeding liking the idea of my own dogs. In rwality looking on lucher link is enough to put me off that idea. I have always had concerns because I associate neutered dogs as being over weight lumbering things. But if I put the effort in it seems the consensus is it will make little differenc.

There are 2 now, I'll pm you the links.

Thanks Dengil,I'm heading to Woburn tomorrow morning. I'll have my terrier in tow and just to hope to see somenlurchers. I have always used dogs with the gun. To effectively use them as catch dogs is an amazing experience. If I can put an unwanted dog to use al the better. And I hope to use a lurcher as part of my own personal fitness regime.

Cracking looking dogs, millet is there a bit of saluki in Khan?

Cheers, I had a browse through the lurcher link. It now seems like a viable option. I'll bung some pics up when I find her.
-
I'll have a look at a couple. I gues they'll let you walk them etc first. I've always insisted on getting a pup as close to 8 weeks. It does make nervous to be honest.

Cheers, I seen a cople of cracking looking dogs. But workers in the homes are there through injury or have been seized. I am in no rush, I've got my busher her and she is doing amazingly. It's not the season, but I took her out for a mooch to bring her along, with my mates dog and we had rabbits bolting everywhere. I'd have killed to have had a runner. Obviously I've never owned a lurcher before. It's a commitment on my part and I am not likely to get rid of the dog despite it's faults.

I have done a lot of reading, this cross and that, pro's and cons. I have realised that I am not wanting anything exceptional. As long as it fast enough to catch a rabbit and a bit of mooching. I have been debating taking one on from a home. Has anyone else done this? It is kind of chicken and egg; if I get a pup it will be preventing a dog from potentially eneding up in s home. It is also awkward not mentioning to them what it is for. Obviously wouldn't been keen on using the RSPCA.

Not really a dedicated hunter, but I was bought up around dogs and shooting, dad had a spaniel, a couple of terriers and a greyhound that wandered in the yard one day. I got a dog that sticks with me at elven, she did everything I could have asked. She worked from the age of 11 till I was 22, then I went to uni. Along side her we had a chiuahua/russell, shepherd, collie, spaniel collie's etc that all worked. I have never had anyone show me how, I just enjoyed working dogs- rats rabbit feather. The other dogs died young in accidents, looking back I could have done better. Along side th

Also, I do now see the difference between purpose dogs, some of the beagle/spaniel/terriers are ace, and a handy dog (something I am aiming for), she is a pot licker that will do work as and when I want!
