Want A New Semi -Automatic
celticrusader replied to spiderfly's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Tbh if you don't look after it it will show signs of problems, don't forget if I remember rightly so a semi auto has gas parts so it will require a strip to remove the carbon I wouldve thought..am I right SS?. Also semi autos do have problems with certain size cartridges so this is also something quite easy to forget. -
Want A New Semi -Automatic

I'll be looking at the Winchester sx3 if I was you, I would've said benelli but by those reviews I've read theyve been over shadowed by the sx3...thinking of one myself next year for pidgeon and crow and maybe for the odd duck. Wouldn't use a semi auto on a syndicate or pheaseant drive and only rough shooting...more fun anyway -
I prefer to have more mag than a lot seem to use but then styles vary and if I get it right on the range at varying distances then I'm more than confident to get it right out hunting, more mag may not be needed but it can only help but do not over do it.
-
What I mean by my previous comment is that the top magnification is (struggling to put this into words) or needs less movement from you the shooter to unsteady the image and which your position on looking through the scope can be changed ever so slightly from your movement and the image displayed. I have found this on a few models of varying brands and although this is more common with higher magnification scopes and does not prevent the job they do it does have a slight effect and not pose a huge problem, in effect my 3-12 works great but on 11 and 12 x mag it is not so easy to shoulder and

4-16x50 ns gameking on my hmr, just remember that even tho you may not use top mag its always best to have a little more than just enough magnification as the top mag on the scope is always finicky to keep the in view on target.

Nothing stopping you do the same with an air rifle under supervision tho...am I wrong guys?

Do you know anyone who owns cf who can either vouch for your competence ie a deer stalker or another person who uses cf for foxes that you have shot with, as said it was in basc at the start of the year that mentoring has been done away with but sadly they still seem to go down this route. If you inform basc they can help but then you may be stirring the pot so to speak.

Calibre Choice - Fac Application
celticrusader replied to Dyl003's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think some take the threat of zombies a little too serious..ha ha ha. Semi autos ain't too bad but from what I've seen they're less accurate in some of these tac rifles. -
I don't think its just the brand I think certain lower end scopes have a certain design that's prone to this regardless of price, that's why even decent brands have they're problem models....notice I said decent not quality brands.lol
-
And take your mod off and clean it bigad, all the build up of carbon shows through by spread of grouping and the dreaded line on your target as well mate.
-
Absolutely SS ...couldn't agree more and have spent for my cf for foxing and the odd deer but its not worth the slight difference in the evening (mainly when I shoot) for a little bit longer. And yes Cedric that scopes had it mate and I'd seriously consider not messing around with it and just take it off and replacing it mate.
-
Not to throw a spanner in your works but I've been thinking the same and the sxp is the one on top form these days and the one I'd go for...even the benelli's have some problems but the sxp doesn't suffer from the loading/jamming problems as other models (apparently)...I've no experience with them but from what I've read on them.
-
You know what...I had a few a few weeks back on the rabbits with the hmr, couldn't quite figure out what it was so I settled on it being the wind which was up and down and quite rough in patches, that's why I get closer to the ground ( sitting with bipod) for a lot of shots instead of supported aim...still managed a 170yrd shot later on tho
-
To a certain degree yeh, I wouldn't get too fancy with a rimfire tho mate, if its light retention your after in the early and departing hours of the day then fine but I'd rather wait an hour after saving for a nitesite or similar and shoot throughout the night tbh.
-
Terryor I was just curious as most those setups they sell with rifles arnt to be trusted too much tbh mate, don't know too much about optic Richter tbh but if you would've said ns mountmaster then I would've been concerned...they seem to be very problematic and show up with loss of zero quite often. Check out the optic Richter and see if others have like minded problems with it mate...might explain.
-
Yeah all pretty good guys and not to dissimilar ways of doing the same thing tbh.
-
I think it depends on your method of cleaning as well slipper, as opposed to a copper wire brush down the barrel try oily patch or some solvent designed for carbon and copper removed and pass a few through and then do it with dry patches until done. I think over brushing is something that's the main problem to what CC is on about...correct me if I'm wrong mate.
-
Being ex army I can see how that happens as well CC, constant brushing and wearing down of the coatings and the finish. I think sometimes people forget you've gotta remove the muck and carbon but not everything else.lol
-
My semi auto .22 is a hell of a mess after a couple of boxes lol...I take down which is simple then wd40 the innards then dry and oil then gun grease that bolt a bit as the carbon clogs and drys everything up and that's job done. Barrels not effected tbh.
-
What's the scope terryor? , maybe knocked and when you rest it up in the cabinet the parts are loose and they unsettle causing loss of zero. You should be alright with a knock as long as it wasn't too heavy or more of a drop.

Do I Need To Send My Licence Off?
celticrusader replied to Ruster's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Tbh I've never come close to filling the spaces and the rfd's will cram it in on there somehow so I don't think you'll even cover half of that....don't quote me on that tho...I don't know how much money or how trigger happy you are .lol -
Every now and then on the odd night where wind does pick up it has its moments but I've never experienced any ammo problems and I'd say more reliable than a .22lr....just my thoughts.
-
Tbh I just wipe mine down when needed and just lightly reapply some oil and then I have gun grease for just behind the lugs at the front of the bolt and slight smidge of it down the side of the bolt and job done.....sounds a lot but its not, you don't have to go nuts.

Do I Need To Send My Licence Off?
celticrusader replied to Ruster's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As long as its not just a general grant of application I think they can be quite quick, variations or just having something removed or a returned FAC with what Dan has said has only taken myself 2 weeks from sending to return....don't know what its like with your force but its not the long task they take with other parts they do on the forms. -
Yes well its still too much gun for shoulder shooting on bunnies but if it bucks the wind over the 100-150 mark then I'd be inclined. Truth is its still a calibre designed not with us in mind (UK) I could see this being open to negative responses but I think this would be a great calibre to own where varminting is a lot more luxurious in choice. Let's face it..rabbits and fox are worlds apart and although both hmr and the hornets loose out in one way or another they do both get the job done.
