I met John Broadhurst in a terriermans house he was interviewing for the new book and i for one couldnt say a bad word about the man. I was stuck to my seat taking in stories he had to tell and gone to earth hit the nail on the head when he said the dogs have ruled his life like they do all good dog men. He seemed as genuine a dog man as ive met not afraid of the hard graft and not like that spoofer whos name was mentioned earlier alongside his who is into dogs for all the wrong reasons. We enjoyed a few pints that nite and he can certainly put em away. I wish him all the best with the book.

What Qualities Make Up A Good Stud Dog?
bull mcabe replied to uru's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Alcapone twice in my post i mentioned that those were my opinions and examples of what has given me my best results over the last number of years i also stated that different lads would completly disagree with me. I only used Dave Harcombes quote as a fine example of what i have found has worked for me the work i do. Theres obviously no hard and fast rules in breeding terriers as one mans medicine is anothers poison. Ive never seen harcombes dogs so i cant comment only seen pictures in a book and in my opinion jack wasnt a big dog but he certainly wasnt bitchy looking. You also cannot see wha -
What Qualities Make Up A Good Stud Dog?
bull mcabe replied to uru's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Dave Harcombe hit the nail on the head when he said a stud dog should look like a dog no second glances. In my opinion you see far too many fine boned bitchy lookin dogs in the terrier game today and there is no way i would consider using such an animal on my bitches that iv worked tirelessly to produce. Of course asthetitics doesnt matter its the ability to find game work and stay till dug to what counts but using such weedy specimens no matter how good they were would be detrimental to your strain. The dogs that ive used over the years that ive found to have been the best sires for my strain -
All pups will fight and try to dominate one another its a natural thing as in the wild only the fittest strongest most dominant cubs survive. Ive had pups bred out cool calm parents actually kill litter mates at 8 wks its nothing to do with being line bred its purely out of the fact these type of terriers are bred to never back down they are bred to work and dominate their game. Usually at 8 or so weeks they dont have the teeth to do damage but they usually all pick on one pup and thats where you'll lose them. If your giving some away you should do it now and it will also save on grub but if

It could be the start of kennel cough which you usually find hits kennels most this time of year just as spring comes in. Just rest up the dog keep him away from your mates dogs for a few weeks and he'll be fine its usually harmless as long as you dont exsert the dog

I have four generations of choc and black dogs in my kennels off same line out of v good blood i was lucky to acquire years ago. Theres def no stigma about chocs not working and they all go back to the first bitch i was given who was choc so theres no stigma about them not throwing decent pups either. Theres alot of pricks on this who just like to just sit behind a computer screen starting rumours and fights while decent dogmen are out actually working there terriers. ATB

No you wernt wrong doin that once you were satisfied she ran the whole earth. When there young and green they could try an earth for an eternity just tryin to make a fox but if the breedings right they soon settle down its all a learning curve with them there not born knowing everything some might take longer than others to get the hang of things and on the other hand you get the ones that seem to take it all in ther stride.
-
Dont encourage that bitch to go to ground just let her do it herself and she'll soon realise when theres game home or not. She's only young so i wudnt mind a few yaps out of her as she's green but do try not to dig her out when she's doin this as she'll have to figure her it out for herself. Digging a dog out thats doin that can be detrimental to it. Once she has afew digs under her belt she should take it in her stride.

U aint seen the real chocs thenMaybe not but I've seen a fair few work if you could call it that and I wasn't impressed.Obviously there is going to be a few about that are decent like anything else but for most owners there a fashion accessory. And all related to the nick Stevens stuff obviously......lol Theres jackers in every strain but there a nice strain wit alot of chocs in south ireland some decent heavily tested dogs. Definatly not a fashion accesory as you so aptly put it.

What Are Border Terriers Capable Of.
bull mcabe replied to jsennitt's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
In my honest opinion ive never seen a good proper working border they just dont seem to exist around my parts but saying that ive seen plenty of good workers with border in them they seem to improve lines that are just lacking a small bit they add good strength in the head a bit of brain and the ones ive seen wouldnt have been too soft either. -
I wouldnt be a lurcher man but id have to agree with GTE that a beddy whippet would be a good idea if your hunting yor jack russell over ground. Hours of entertainment bushing rabbits and foxes
