  1. You're wrong. The superposition of sound waves from the bullet is continuous for as long as the bullet is supersonic. You will only hear one crack but the phenomenon itself is continuous throughout the bullets supersonic trajectory. Ian I don't claim to be an expert. I knew it only happened once and roughly why but I readily admit I had to google the exact mechanics as I'm no physicist. However, if you read the article I linked above, then it states the crack is singular because once the object breaks the sound barrier, it out accelerates the sound so you no longer get the build up
  2. It emits the crack as it passes through the sound barrier, a mini sonic boom caused by a build up of sound waves in front of the object. So you only get the crack once. Once it's faster than the speed of sound, it outruns the sound waves so you don't get a build up again. The point at which you get the crack will depend on how fast the bullet accelerates and thus how far from the barrel it is when the sound barrier is reached. As the bullet decelerates, you don't get a build up because it's slowing. No mention of bullets but some explanation with aircraft: http://www.scientific
  3. Hair re-mover boxes? (Sorry couldn't resist!)
  4. .17 WSM looks very promising especially for those whose forces won't grant centre fire initially. Ballistically it's very similar to .22 Hornet at range for energy and has better wind drift and drop characteristics. So far as I'm aware though, it's still not in the UK. Being rimfire its cheap to shoot though which suits those who don't homeload. Compared to Hornet (both 20 gr rounds) Hornet Muzzle Energy: 592 WSM Muzzle Energy: 400 Hornet 200yd Energy: 294 WSM 200yd Energy: 199 Hornet Muzzle Velocity: 3650 WSM Muzzle Velocity: 3005
  5. Have to be very bad ammo to do so. Certainly surprised me. Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with HMR per se. It has it's place ie long range rabbit control, close range fox. Where it falls down is on ammo quality and that's down to the ammo manufacturers as I see it. If .17 can be made in other calibres including centre fire without neck issues then why can't it be made in .17 HMR? If it was base failings due to a weakened base due to it being thinner being rim fire, I could understand it, but round the neck, I find much harder to swallow as an inherent issue otherwise the nec
  6. One or two reports have started to surface about the odd cracked round in .17wsm as well although I haven't heard of any of the other ammo problems people have had with HMR. From what Deker says it sounds very much that until they start making the cases natively in .17 rather than drawing them down, these issues may continue. Surely they can be cast with a .17 neck can't they?
  7. I should have said above of course that it varies from ammo manufacturer to manufacturer, and bullet type and weight. However, you're not going to see much deviation from those figures. The rifle's going to have very little influence unless you have a very short barrel in which case you may see a slight difference due to length.
  8. Rimfire or FAC Air? RImfire is approx 190 ft lbs with supersonic and around 100 ft lbs with subs. Win Mag 300 ft lbs.
  9. That'll never fit in a Landrover and with the weight you might as well just cosh the rabbit with it!
  10. Is that really true though? Would it not be more accurate to say that it's less prone to richochets? My experience of .22 RF is it's a great round for noise but it does ricochet badly if the circumstances aren't right and it does have a tendancy to pass through. I don't have direct experience of .17HMR but from what I've been told it does fragmen in the target, making it safer in that regard. Whatever, the truth though, I think we can all agree that no round is ever safe. Safety comes from the shooter ensuring it's backstopped.
  11. Absolute bullsh*t! You can shoot safely on 1 acre nearly flat field if you backstop it correctly. What do they think happens when professional pest controllers shoot foxes in back gardens? Most back gardens are the size of a postage stamp - less than 30 foot square! It's all about backstops, awareness of potential dangers, planning shots and taking care. 11 Acres is a very reasonable size. Talk to the BASC.
  12. I would think speeding points would only go as anecdotal evidence, as one of the factors amongst many, to show his level of responsibility / respect for the law, nothing else. I can't see how in themselves they can make a person unsuitable. I certainly can't see how 3 points for a minor offence make you unsuitable either as probably 50% of the population are on 3 points during any 5 year period. I think it would take a pretty bad licence to show he was prone to reckless behaviour.
  13. Biggest pull for me with electronic traps is the lack of mess - no blood contamination. Plus I like a bit of tech.
  14. Is that because it's no good or just because you haven't used it?
  15. If you're having problems with wary rats, then have you thought of using an electronic trap instead such as this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/procter-electronic-rat-killer/76836?kpid=76836&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CI-ik4DM6bwCFQkUwwod16oA6Q The point with these is if a rat has become wary of traps, then this uses a different method - electrified plates rather than a trigger plate so they won't have seen this before. Also, I believe you can put the bait in the back beyond the plates so the rat has no choice but t
  16. This is all you need, something like this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-folding-shovel/54626?kpid=54626&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=COvJsOKu6LwCFbLJtAodZGAAUA ...and some disinfectant to spray on the blade if you let it contact the rats.
  17. There was a place near me a couple of years ago where you'd never seen so many rabbits. Literally on a summer's evening you couldn't see the grass for rabbits - probably 10,000 out in an evening - no exaggeration. You couldn't have placed a Jack Russell between the rabbits! The huge field actually looked white. The landowner didn't take care of them despite his obligation to do so - was a business premises in an old stately home. I'm guessing he knew nothing of the law or the country. A year later and ever since, not even seen a single rabbit on the same field. Probably is the odd one, but
  18. My apologies Alex if I got this wrong. I wanted to join SACS the other week as a licensing issue was starting to crop up relating to security, but I could have sworn I found a copy of your policy somewhere on-line and when I read it the insurance underwriter excluded many licensing issues. If that isn't the case, then again my apologies. I can't find it now and it was several weeks ago so this side of hitting on it by accident, it remains a mystery! I certainly wouldn't have paid to join the BASC if I could have joined SACS for £25!!
  19. You have to remember that neither Deker or Charlie like the HMR. That's fine we all have our preferences. BS I personally prefer it over .22. The .22 has it's place and it's stood the test of time, but it's far more prone to ricochet and personally I'd take the extra power of the HMR and the shock over the silence and poor expansion of .22 any day unless shooting close to houses at night. You would be better to stop reading and try shooting, do you ever intend to get a FAC or simply continue to BS the world with what you heard or read somewhere! BTW Deker there are plenty of peopl
  20. Yeah also watch your amount of zoom. The more you magnify the image, the more you magnify any slight movement or shake. Try it with a pair of binoculars and see what I mean. There's such a thing as too much of a good thing. That's why many target shooters use a bench rest.
  21. Saddam Hussein had the same problem: http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/april/11/newsid_2477000/2477023.stm They had a really bad rabbit problem out there apparently. Rabbits the size of houses!
  22. You have to remember that neither Deker or Charlie like the HMR. That's fine we all have our preferences. I personally prefer it over .22. BTW Deker there are plenty of people who take small ground game at 150-200 yds+ with the HMR in the real world. Just have a look on Youtube and that includes some videos from members on here, and that's
