To Soon To Apply For Different Gun ?
Alsone replied to Adrian Prisk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It usually states on your ticket what your allowed to shoot. If you have All Lawful Quarry, then you're ok. If not and you have eg. vermin, ground game and other small quarry against the HMR. Then you can't shoot fox (its regarded as medium quarry). Some would argue its vermin but I'm using the headings from the Firearmas Guidance Tables as It's these the police would most likely rely on in Court. -
The barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. You're right in what you say about the speed in which you can acquire a target and the speed in which the gun will swing. If you use your test of two guns in a vice which are exactly the same with exactly the same chokes then at 35 yards they would throw the same pattern. Ultimately, a shorter barrel will be quicker to swing but it's the old adage of practice makes perfect, the shooter will get used to it. I own a 26" Skeet gun which has an added weight in the stock to make the barrels swing faster, it took me months to get used t

Derbyshire are a good force. Congratulations on your grant.

The biggest difference in barrel length effects is accuracy although this is down to the shooter and their sighting more than the inherent accuracy of the gun. With a longer barrel the gun is slower to swing and so lends itself to a steadier and smoother swing, and the sight plane is longer (the additional weight also helps here further). This tends towards accuracy at the expense of speed. Hence why trap shooters tend towards 32" barrels and sporting shooters 28" or 30" barrels. The longer the sight plane and the smoother and steadier the swing, the the easier it is to target the target.

Yeah wouldn't want a used one.

I'm not sure where you got your Home Office view from as taken from the Home Office Firearms Guidelines November 2013 edition p.40 section 6.18: ..and section 6.19 then says: So there's nothing 100% concrete this side of a change to the Firearms Act or a test case that decides against this, but you'd be very unlucky to find a Court ignoring the Home Office guidelines.

Legal in England under the exemption set out in section 7 of the Deer Act. Ahh. Hadn't seen that for England. Considering everyone having a right to shoot is the occupier by the latest definition in the Firearms Guidelines, it renders Schedule 2 kind of pointless. (It recommends the definition in S27 Wildlife Act & Countryside Act 1981 be adopted).

Don't know about Scotland but I believe it's illegal in England to shoot deer with a smooth bore shotgun under the 1991 Deer Act - Schedule 2. That would apply to slugs or shot. I should have mentioned that above when I referenced deer. I would think a rifled barrel does satisfy the act (subject to the necessary energy requirements being met), as it specifically prohibits "smooth bore" guns.

Worse than that, you'd have probably been illegally in possession of Section 1 ammunition.... Unlike most shotgun ammunition which is legal to possess (but not buy) without a certificate, all firearm ammunition, requires a valid FAC varianced for that calibre for possession. So far as I'm aware that applies to section 1 shotgun ammo also. As for slugs, my understanding of them is that they're usually only granted for medium game such as Deer / Boar. They're also considered quite dangerous by some as being solid they have a tendency to pass through and ricochet. I'm sure someone

Invited On Friends Permission - Advise Please ?
Alsone replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Apart from the fact that there's his signature and hand writing analysis. I don't disagree with the 1st part of the 2nd paragraph, but will say its far safer to have to have it in writing. In writing you have something. Verbally you have nothing. That's also why it makes sense to have a get out clause in place as then the land owner can see that he's not signing his life away but can cancel the permission at any time. My ex-bosses favourite saying was always .."cover your back" and it makes sense as I saw a lot of people get in trouble from failing to do that. -
Invited On Friends Permission - Advise Please ?
Alsone replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
@ Ken. I'd be very wary of this though. To give you a quick tale, my father obtained a permission many years ago prior to putting in for an FAC for a .22. When the police went out to interview the land owner, the land owner suddenly denied even knowing him (obviously he had changed their mind). Whilst my father wasn't in trouble as he hadn't shot there due to not having got his FAC (although he recounted things being a bit shaky with the police (maybe they considered wasting time or fraud?), this obviously shows how dangerous it can be to rely on verbal permission. You shoot on some la -
Invited On Friends Permission - Advise Please ?
Alsone replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Although I don't disagree with this there are 2 points: 1. It may be difficult to get written permission as many landowners don't want to grant permission to everybody - they don't mind you coming with a friend, but they often don't want to grant you individual permission which is what they'd be doing if they fill out a permission form. Effectively you gain a right to shoot the land if they do that. They also often don't want to risk offend their existing shooters by granting more permissions. 2. Provided your friends permission slip gives him authority to "bring a friend" (don't use -
Only trouble with FAC air is you need a lot of land. Miss not only the squirrel but the tree and you have a pellet that's dangerous to quite some distance. Shot are spent within yds or the downwards arc although you need always to keep them within your boundaries.

26 Rabbits & A Vixen (Fun Night)
Alsone replied to Cushty mush's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
:icon_eek: :icon_eek: Not unless you want to go to jail! You need permission but as many councils are left wing and anti-gun you might find it difficult. -
That's a long wait!

Ideal shotgun situation provided you have the necessary land to back drop the tree. Probably ideally suited to a hushpower at that, as squirrels tend to be skittish at best. If they do take to the trees and disappear from the shotgun noise, then with a shotty, you can always shoot the base out of the dreys. It will take out anything inside.
-
Experience usually.
-
Maybe we should do that with squirrels here. Dye some red with hair dye then toss them down the M1 all the way to London. (Just in case some nutter reads this, don't seriously do this please as dropping animal carcasses in the road is illegal).

...or under a dense hedge is quite a favourite if you don't have access to the above. Just try not to choose one near a public footpath as you don't want to antagonise any local antis.

Police Interview Shotgun/firearm
Alsone replied to tillbrook's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In "very simple" terms it isn't................. For a SGC, you are entitled to one unless they can show good reason why you should not be granted one. For a FAC you can't have one unless you can demonstrate good reason why you should to them, that may well include your character! Thanks for the clarification Deker although I did say "..provided you meet their requirements for good character". They can't just arbitrarily decide you are of bad character without reason. -
Police Interview Shotgun/firearm
Alsone replied to tillbrook's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ask him if he can give you a reason why you can't be trusted! and you will give him a week to think about it lol. Exactly the 1st thing I thought of (without the week). I'd have just put him on the spot. It's for them to show your unsuitable. They can't arbitrarily refuse you a licence because they think you can't be trusted without any good reason behind that such as convictions, health history etc. Provided you meet the requirements in terms of good character (reasons just given + you pass the MI5 checks etc.), are of the required age, and provided you've shown good reason in the -

Oh OK then. Like I said, I'm not.

I think we're on the same page here. There's 1 crack that originates when the bullet breaks the sound barrier but obviously you don't here it until the sound reaches you which is what the illustration is showing.
