Nice little dog. Looks a bit timid? Try knocking the dried food on the head and feeding a mix of raw and cooked meat with a bit of mixer. Tripe is good, breast of lamb raw is good, as is raw chicken (mine love chicken wings). The bones won't hurt her unless they're cooked. When you find what food suits her she'll start to put weight on over a week or so Scraps are not good. It sounds to me as though it may be diet-related. Some dogs can be fussy eaters, especially bitches. Make sure her food is somewhere where she can eat it without being disturbed, and let her take her time. Don't

Salt water is an excellent antiseptic, and promotes healing. It could be that the cream you are using is stopping the scab from forming properly. Handful of salt in a basin of warm water. Use a clean flannel or cloth to soak the wound. Don't make the salt solution too strong - at that strength it will do the job and not sting. Also, and I don't know what anyone else thinks, but looking at the size of the wound I would have said it needed a stitch when it first happened. Easy to say afterwards, I know, and I'm not casting any blame. We've probably all had a tear in a dog and been unsure if

Three Quarter Greyhound Quarter Deerhound
Taz-n-Lily replied to davis8008's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
they were gareth but mine took forever to mature ,would just look at my mates saluki x coursing and wouldnt bat an eyelid then one day the penny dropped and he went on from there .problem these days some people have no patients just give them a little time and they should come good. That's the deerhound. Mine's over two now and still a pup - coming along nicely though. -
Unlikely to be scar tissue with infection after all this time. I would go with a foreign body in the wound which is preventing healing, and a bit of scar tissue. Show us a pic.
-
First of all, lovely pup and thanks for posting the pics. All good advice on here. I can only add to take things slowly and keep the training sessions short - 5 to 10 mins max. I haven't even started on retrieve with my pup yet - we're still working on recall. When that is perfect we'll move on. He will bring in rabbits, after a fashion.

Best two working dogs I ever saw lived in comfort with their owner on a narrowboat. My dogs live in the house. I have high hopes of the deerhound X when he's a bit older...................

Best to get her checked out properly, but she should be fine if she's healthy.

Nothing in mid-Wales either. In fact it's been a nice day here, cold, but ok when wrapped up. I did notice that neither dog went in the river this morning .

Standing off with catch, Won't retrieve

That my friend is up there with the advice to feed a dog tinned rice pudding daily, and to stick a finger up it's bum if it doesn't come in when called! We should start a new thread of the best (worse) dog advice on here . -
Don't start them off too early, and keep the sessions down to 5 mins or so to begin with - otherwise, as above.

I would just add my vote to not using the collar. How is she on coming in when you call her without the rabbit? If she isn't spot-on I would go back to basics and work on that. She's still young enough to learn, and be a great dog at the end of it. -
Does spaying affect a working dog?
Taz-n-Lily replied to tsteve9999's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Good point - same with the dangly bits on dogs. Other point - my staffy x whippet stiil has her bits - she's seven, comes into season once a year - no bit deal. -
There are two types of ultrasound units - diagnostic, and theraputic. The diagnostic one works quite well in human medicine. There is no validated research to show that theraputic ultrasound actually works in humans. To the OP - try a Google for your US model instructions.

Do I see growth plates? Nice looking pup - I like that JRT too.
-
No growth plates doesn't mean bad feed - it means she's going to be full height soon - I think? She may end up at around 24/25 inches tts - not a bad height. Got any pics?

Hello lads and lasses I have a problem
Taz-n-Lily replied to Borntohuntbow's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Tried that it don,t work, stick your index finger up its jacksy when it eventually returns,it will never leave your side for long then,if you doubt me,try it. Really? I'll conduct an experiment with my two today - I'll get the wife to stick her finger up though. I'll report back.......... Just tried it - predictably, it didn't work. Oh, and the wife (Mrs sh*tty-finger) would like a word with the idiot who suggested it.............. -

R.s.p.c.a case Lurcher man needs help!

The RSPCA is a charity, and like some others (the RSPB for example) it is now more interested in fundraising than it's original purpose. The previous chairperson had links with PETA, I believe. Anyway, I think their charitable status is being challenged currently, due to them transgressing some charity rules in their keeness to prosecute those two blokes from the Hunt which Cameron had rode with, and which cost over £300,000.00 in Court and legal expenses. They won't lose their status, but they may have to do a rethink on their activities. -
Well yes, but every dog is different, and each mix is different too. My dog comes in to the whistle, but he wouldn't if he was hunting. And I don't walk him off-lead, because I don't have the control yet. He's over 2 years but a deerhound X which, it is well-recognised, take an age to mature. To the OP - take your time and the dog will come good. And forget all about flicking your dog's nose.
-
Some good advice there. The dog is very young, and you need to work on recall without distractions (like hunting). With patience the pup will come good in time, but it can't be hurried.
-
Ok - I'll bite - back in a minute.......... UPDATE Nasty - vets for first port of call. My guess is that there's something lodged or torn, but get the dog checked out properly. As long as parvo inoculations are up to date you don't have too much to worry about. Fingers crossed.

Salt water and rest is good. You can't speed up healing. You can optimise healing, you can take steps to ensure that healing is not slowed down, but you can't speed it up. If you can speed up healing let the Premiership Football Clubs know - you'll make a fortune! I'll just mention David Beckham a few years ago with a busted fifth metatarsal. He had every treatment known to man, including hyperbaric oxygen. It took six weeks to heal. A busted metatarsal in an ordinary mortal of the same age, with bog-standard NHS treatment, takes - six weeks to heal............. You are doing exa
