  1. Nice one! We had a little chase this morning first light (really just to give the sapling a stretch). The bunny got away .
  2. Yes, but you didn't pay for his time, you paid for the expertise, advice and meds, and the fact that you have comeback on him should anything go wrong (like misdiagnosis). Some people know more than others about treating dogs - some think they do but it's clear to me they are guessing - like some of the advice on here when someone says "my dog is such-and-such". Not knocking the lads who do know what they're talking about here BTW. I know about musculoskeletal problems in humans - it's my job. It's not too big a leap of faith for me to be able to give advice on here about musculoskelet
  3. An ask to keep us up-to-date on your dog's progress. I've never heard of this before (but I am a novice). Very interesting thread.
  4. Why rested? Was he over-exercised? Why are the legs dodgy - can you post a pic? Skycat talks about a genetic defect and I think this is spot-on (I work with biomechanics in humans, not dogs, apart from my own - just so we're all sure). Like in the recent Olympics, some people are made to run, and so are some dogs. Even in the right mix of dogs some are way better than others - it's in the blood, or more correctly, it's in the genes. If the dog doesn't conform to your ideal you have two choices, get rid, or work with what you have. From personal experience working with what you have
  5. How does he smell? . . . . . . . . . . Terrible! Boom Boom!
  6. How does he smell? Terrible! Boom Boom!
  7. No wonder there's no rabbits. There's some geezer standing in full view just over the fence!
  8. How can anyone tell how good, or otherwise, a dog is from a fu ing pic on the internet? Can't be done. To me the pup looks good to go.
  9. il hav to get myself to the docters Not at all. Why not waste a bit of time trying things from the internet .
  10. You are right. I've never poached with a dog (probably because I'm new to the game) but I've poached plenty of fish when I was younger. I just think that this behaviour (cutting fences, and killing with no respect for the quarry) shows us all in a bad light and does nothing for the sport.
  11. Reminds me of that bit in Crocodile Dundee - where they were shooting wallabies or kangaroos and he shot back from behind a dead'un? Needs dealt with, because it gets us all a bad name. You could have a new permission into the bargain. Me, I'd get the police involved, but I know that doesn't go down too well here. They may do naff-all, but then you can get involved yourself and say you tried the proper measures. The sheep are near to lambing probably, so the farmer's not going to be too chuffed at someone letting their dogs chase them .
  12. Not me. I like raw or cooked meat, fish, veg and fruit, and meal for my dogs. I like to know what's going into their food,
  13. Cheers mate he's big alright lol Atb with yours mate Cheers .
  14. Snorter of a dog that - bigger version of what mine's going to mature into - hopefully.
  15. You can say that again . For ferreting, my dog is 251/2 tts. The best dog I ever saw for ferreting was a saluki X slightly bigger. My dog may be slightly heavy for ferreting, hard to tell at the moment. Sometimes he's like a carthorse, then once in a while he'll stretch out and float. That's when I get a big grin on my face - just seeing the potential. No finer sight - anywhere. Lovely dogs above BTW, Deerhound X's take an age to mature - you just have to hang in there.
  16. Fair comment. I see it as good that people are asking advice. At least they're taking an interest in the dogs welfare and presumably are going to work the dog at some stage. Split nails - going to happen sometime, even with dogs which aren't worked. What I do is tape the split nail sides back together. If the blood supply to the nail is ok the nail will grow out normally. Keep it clean (salt water soaks), renew the tape every day, trim the nail after the split has healed, about a week or so.
  17. Never had a worst dog, but one or two were better than others........................
  18. Back on topic - is it just me or does anyone else think the OP hasn't really thought this through?????? Off-topic, there are good pups out there which don't cost an arm and a leg. Mine, though not trained yet, will turn out fine for what I want - he was a rescue.
  19. Your dog will be fine. Concentrate on training for now - let him grow into his prey-drive, which with the mix he has will certainly be there. My dog is over two and we're still on basic training (mind, he's deerhound X). He likes to chase, but he's still developing and he won't really be ready for proper work until next Autumn. Yours wil probably do what my dog did and find a Spring or Summer sitter to grab - no looking back as far as bunnies are concerned after that.
  20. The dog needs to be socialised. It's young enough to make a mistake or two and learn. As someone else said, put the work in. Don't just ditch one or the other.
