Two hobs won't fight if they have been castrated before sexual maturity. But most people prefer jills to hunt with so I'd go for another jill.

A lost ferret would end up in a mess over a little time. Maybe he's been micro chipped?
-
Also, put a bit of oil down for them and let them stand there and lick it whilst you put the locator on with no trouble.

Could do, I did stock up on snares at the end of the season to do under a farmers wives garden shed to keep him/her happy.... But I never went back haha naughty, hope he's still keen. But I'm not as into snaring as ferreting, not as much action, too much law checking, twice a day is it? Bet I end up with her cat in it 8-|

Haha, I'm not sure if either land owner would be keen on the idea of burning it haha one has a nice row of trees along the bottom by the road and another has so much it would take a team to keep an eye on. But I will suggest it hehe, if they want the rabbits gone, they might be game. Gorse, your right, maybe whins the Scottish name? I don't know. I'll need to have another look and keep fire breaks in mind. There certainly is a few smaller patches I could long net. The amount of rabbits in these places makes me keen!

I hope I've got the name right? Whin bush? Spiky yellow bushes. I've got two permissions I plan to hit come Sep-Oct that are a bit wild with it. One has a very long stretch of it, then a whole field full going down a banking, loads of rabbits flee towards it when I approach but I couldn't touch the land other than one warren on the edge. Another is (in a cheeky way) good because the land around is open and great to ferret and I can go back every year as the whin allows the rabbits a great place to repopulate. I'd give the whin area a bash except there is a road at the bottom of the hill and it

Might tie in with what you were saying about ferrets turning out not to be the pets people had hoped. I'm sure I read the US ferret farms were then selectively breeding the 'friendlier' ferrets to be more suited to pet life. With no intention to breed good working ferrets, the killer instincts may have been reduced with it. But at the end of the day, if it goes down the holes, many rabbits will bolt just due to the fact a predator is there. A working ferret over here can cost as little as nothing, they are abundant. I wouldn't consider going down the importing route though, if that's what

Yeah 2 litre bottles cut up make good tubes. Can tape them together too.

Do you guys not find kits just destroy tennis balls an other soft toys? I worry they might try and eat some so I avoid the softer toys until they are older. But hard plastic balls go down very well, even better with bells. Tubes. Plastic container filled with something to snorkel and dig in. Boxes with holes. Mine go crazy for plastic bags but only have them when I'm around. If they seem to get board try rotating the toys. Tubes and some toys one day, dig box other toys the next etc.

Tricky question, some of the guys might disagree with me on this one but I've found some ferrets quite useless in the past. One wouldn't go down a hole and would just run around on the surface. When shown a rabbit my working ferrets would be hanging off it in a second and she would have a sniff then go off and do her own thing. So I'd say not all ferrets work... well. You might have more trouble finding a good worker over there as I believe most ferrets are bred for pet lives only?
-
Mine are valued pets as well as workers, id only head home for a torch...
-
Do your ferrets actully come when called whilst hunting? Mine come running in the house when called. My hob comes eventually when I let them run in a field. But whilst the fun of hunting happens, my call means nothing to them. Best I can do is try mimic a rabbits distress call.

True about early handling. I've got to give it to Dogger on here, the kit I recently got from him was a blessing, it must have had the human interactions from an early age, good job, she's getting cheeky now haha but still it was a welcome change to the kits I've had in the past, one of which took months to calm down to a human hand. I think getting a kit at 8 weeks is best especially if ypu will handle it more than the breeder. I wouldn't take one earlier simply because I like to litter box train mine and having them learn from mum that a corner is best makes life easier. Otherwise I don't

True, ive spotted a great bit of land full of holes but can never seem to find the farmer! Gone in the afternoon and he's out in the fields. Once waited until 7pm so a farmer would be in and he went crazy because I shouldn't have disturbed him at that time. Can't win...
-
Ive not got one yet either but will before the season starts. Shame about the prices, I grudge paying that for what it actully is. But my jill hasn't masterd killing rabbits yet but the day might come. For the peace of mind and just to have an idea of what's going on makes it worth it. Once I get mine I'm going to open it and have a look. I work in electronics so if I can copy it, I will.

He's taking the piss. If not, be thankful your not paying his vet bills within five years.
-
Not lost my permission but the farmer on one farm has let two guys on with their hawk and ferret, they cleared out the best field last season before I got to it. But I think the ferrets been doing it's job too well because theyve been digging holes everywhere haha
-
They would be more active in using the nails, digging etc. Would keep them filed down.

How Do You Know When Your Feedings Ferrets To Much?
GreyRake replied to tiger82's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Never had a ferret over eat in my opinion, they just eat what they need. They get a bit fatter in the winter then slim down for the summer. Too much vegetable content in cat food and even more in dog food, doesn't get used, just crapped out, then they eat more. So far I've tried a few kibbles and found Vitalin leaves them crapping the least, but its a bit more expensive than the average kibble. Mine have kibble down 24/7 As for meat you just have to learn from experience how much they eat really then just put that amount in each day so you don't waste any. -
I prefer working jills but hobs seem to have the better natures generally. My hob has never bitten me hard or hissed at me, can't say the same for the jills. He mans the hammock while the girls catch the tea haha

I'm sure they will just be playing, it can be shocking how badly they rag each other about. They are built to take it.

Injection At Vets To Put Jill Out Of Season ? Liberty !
GreyRake replied to foxtails's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I got the same story from the vet about having to throw the rest away within 24hours. But thankfully my vet tries to get the local ferret owners in on the same day to reduce the cost each. -
I got some of pets at home ferret malt paste stuff, just because I wonderd if they were having trouble with ingesting hairs, sometimes they sounded like they had something in their throat. Otherwise it was good for cutting nails and training them. Olive oil for me otherwise.

I sometimes do. Net up then have some lunch or a smoke. Me and my helper like to have a banter and a laugh while we are netting, were certainly not quiet.
