  1. Will they be kept outside? If you have the choice, go with outside, trust me! Ferrets as standard dont need any training to hunt. I teach mine to come and shit in the right place but thats not necessary. But do try to get ferrets from a line of working stock. A decent bought hutch and 3-4 ferrets may cost you 100+. Two ferrets would be a good starting place if your new to it.| Locators dont come cheap though....
  2. Yeah, had a great season with my jill, her first and my first for eight years or so. As a child id take my hob and border terrier out behind my mums back. We caught all sorts - voles, rats, rabbits... the ferret even caught a one eyed phesent from under some stacked corrugated iron haha, the good old days. Great to get out again, especially finally doing it properly hehe.
  3. http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r763/BobRake/IMG_0392_zps959dab73.jpg Its a wood effect lino i have.... If i could choose id have gone for a white lino, just to show where the dirt is.
  4. I guess Joes nailed the answer there lol. Mines is hooked onto thick cable ties, but i have the bare strips of wood to tie them around. I guess if you wanted to use cable ties and protect the wood you'd need to drill holes then varnish/paint into the hole. http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r763/BobRake/IMG_0392_zps959dab73.jpg Sorry i dont have a close up. Spoilt fuckers though ^ haha
  5. I dont shoot myself but surely the guys who use shotguns dont got picking the carcass for all the pellets? Seems like alot of hassle?
  6. If you want to get one, go for it, but they are happier with a pal. They don't cost that much to feed really, im about to throw out a huge bag of cheap kibble i thought they would have eaten by now! Technically you should give a solo ferret more attention and space. I had a solo hob when i was a child who would pace back and forward in his cage, seemingly going crazy now im looking back... Sorry if im getting all animal rights on you hahaha recently had a trip to the zoo
  7. Yeah. I have an indoor setup, but i will be sticking to it even if mine are outdoor again. Lino cut to the floor size/shape (usually free, from off cuts if you you ask around) fleeces from a pound shop for bedding - machine washable (avoid in-tact hobs though haha stinky) and a litter box in the shit corner (detachable but fixed in place) with some sort of absorbent wood based litter. Never tried it without a litter tray, if they crap right against the wall it will still rot the wood.... but you could always try attaching vertical bits of lino to the edge of that corner? Glue maybe? Anyway, li
  8. Reinforces me to stick to the lino!
  9. Maybe just a bad taxidermist haha https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_ferret-badger
  10. As the one said, you can always start will the basic gear, ferrets and nets. Then build on it gradually as you go. A fair sized hutch, few bowls and some shavings will get you started with the housing. You can always change or expand on that later too. Good luck
  11. Was just inquiring to see if anyone has a V-Hob in my area who could service my jill? She already had the jab this year but has just came into season, sigh. Cheers
  12. Frozen bottles are a good idea, some people then put them into a sock but I'm not sure why could ferrets stick to the bottle? haha Mine are opting to sleep on the bottom floor of the cage, under a fleece against the lino. When I let them out they get a bit crazy and I suspect heat up so I run cold water on my hand and stroke them down, not sure how much it helps though.
  13. Quite possibly. Was said to be stress that killed the hob but my money would be on the heat. All the ferret owners in the area know each other and nobody claimed them.
  14. One hob and two jills were found in Newtown St Boswells, Scottish Borders recently. Apparently the hob died. The jills are now in a rescue in the Fife area.
  15. Yeah. He seems very genuine and honest about how the mink is getting on. Shame this skilled mustelid wasn't utilised before and we could be having fun with a domesticated version!

    Nails

Normal pet clippers would do yeah. I use wire snips, only sharp though otherwise they crush rather than clean cut and can hurt them in them process. Shouldn't matter about them being albino, I've never not been able to see what's inside the nail yet.
  17. I'll PM you Joe. Found I've been more successful this year. Just got a smart new car and had the GF in the passenger, think that's what made me look more, reliable/trustworthy I guess. Plus the first two sentences make a difference. Your name and "ferreter, just checking if anyone has an abundance of rabbits they want looking at" point out your not using guns until you've paid a few decent visits. Think I've got already got my rifle friend onto one perm just through the chat, will need to get myself a better rifle!
  18. I find ferrets don't chew like many people think, they pull on things... But mainly with claws and a little teeth. Until they learn about cable ties, which I've not seen yet, they will hold fine, I'm sure.
  19. Looks awesome! I'm jealous! Wish I could get my ferrets outside again and have fun with the space. Joe67 - get cable tie packs from poundland (or the likes) cheap and has a section full of big strong ties. They will hold pipes and are generally handy for ferret courts. I use loads to keep everything in place and they haven't figured out how to destroy them.... Yet

    Nails

Yes defiantly cut the nails, more so when not working and not using the nails. Especially the front paws which grow faster - for digging. I check/cut mine at least once a month. The reason for doing it is the nails will eventually grow so long and curl down below the feet, so as they put the foot down the nails land first and push up against the toes as the foot lands. If you look close you will see a darker/reddish part inside the nail - this delivers the blood and you don't want to cut into it, or it will bleed, it's called the 'quick' or something. But cut a little in front of it. Putt
  21. Maybe kept minks may have a use! Looks interesting. More fun than using a rod in my opinion haha. This guy is trying to teach his mink to catch fish. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=Y43REKpMQqY Sorry if the link doesn't work, I'm on my mobile. YouTube search - Joseph mink fishing Edit - another video of one catching a fish http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=oXRpujBWRfw Would be awesome to watch your mink catching fish like that. The guy in the first video has another of his mink retrieving pigeons and rats to it's carrier box. Quite inspirational, fancy giving my hob s
  22. Had a little drive around on Sunday looking for a few new permissions to line the season up with, three out of four - yes. The farmer that said no said I should come back and see the land owner when he's about, but they've had trouble with ferreting poachers in the good spots recently so maybe cleared out. So I've got a promise to a farmer from last season to start with then onto the new stuff, all were keen. Chuffed! Depending on the rabbit problem, that may be more than I need to last me the season as I only really get out at the weekends. I emailed a town council near by that has spent
  23. Good pictures. Did they actully enjoy the water? Haha
  24. It varies from ferret to ferret. Jills are worse than (castrated) hobs to introduce. Try them one at a time with the new comer. Hold them near each other first, see if there's any obvious aggression. Then let them down and keep a close eye on things. You can probs expect a bit of dominance fighting at some point, trying to scruff each other etc but as long as they are not trying to rip each others throat out, causing bleeding or shitting from fear just try and leave them to sort it out. If it's persistent scrapping, keep them separate and do small daily trials together until it calms down. Can
