  1. To bring them out of season? Your looking for a vasectomised hob, a castrated hob wont.
  2. Never bred myself, but lived next door to a gamekeeper in the past who bred and had ferrets of all ages running rampant. I was the one welcomed in to handle the crazy buggers everyday haha. He just kept them all together. But its best to separate the mother and kits unless your sure the jills get on well.
  3. Yeah the butchers only request them to be skinned because of the fur getting everywhere.
  4. I get 1.50 for a small one and £2 for a big one, I'm expected to gut and skin them but if I have a few I'll claim I didn't have enough time for them all haha and he still pays. The butchers around here claim there's a bit of a shortage for rabbit so all are keen. If it's the same next season I'll try and get a bit of a bidding war on hehe
  5. Its true, most of the broken tooth cases get the all clear. Just depends on how much is missing. If you were in doubt might be best to though. £35 is alot, my vet charges £15 for a consultation but charged me very little for looking at the tooth because she just had a glance and said it was ok.
  6. It is very entertaining, I usually get a hand stuck in for a little wrestle haha.
  7. Depends on how much has broken off. You don't want the pulp to be exposed. Ferrets are very good at hiding pain. Watch him when he drinks cold water to see if he shows signs of it being sensitive, he might shake his head and/or slaver the water out or it could be as subtle as him squinting an eye. Can also try touching the broken bit with a cotton bud dipped in cold water to check. Certainly if it's broken to less than 50% I'd have a vet look at it. My jill chipped a little bit off hers, took her to the vet for the all clear and i only got charged £3 for the check.
  8. Haha she was happy and excited. It's normal for ferrets.
  9. Not having a go, but you will find a ferret will eat lots more cat food that it would ferret specific food. They will get less nutrition from the cat food and not absord as much... Just crap it out... And eat more. So maybe switching to ferret food would save you some money.kitten food has more protein and is better suited to ferrets than adult cat food.
  10. Avoid flicking on the nose, especially if your working them, you want that nose in good working order yeah? Scruffing can work, for some ferrets only! Always be gentle, its not to hurt them, just to talk in their language to say your the boss, but if you think its making her worse as in shes rising to the challenge of whos boss you need to abandon that method. Do you let them out for play/exercise? If so a small empty carrier can work as a sort of jail cell, ferrets get very board and knowing biting means five minutes in the cell can discourage them. Letting them lick treats from your fingers
  11. What kind of bite is it? Bite hard and hold? Or a quick bite and let go? Is it hard enough to make you bleed?
  12. Now ive started keeping ferrets indoors, i used lino for the cage floor, fleeces for the bed and wood pellets in a litter box. Ill be keeping ferrets like this for now on, indoor or out. Fleeces and litter boxes from a pound shop. Fleeces go in the washing machine and dry quick after. Never spend more than 6pound a month on litter for the two of them.
  13. Can give ferrets of all ages respiratory problems over time. Anything that seems too dusty is best avoided.
  14. She won't die because she's not been bred. But jills have a high chance of getting ill and dying when in season yes, there are other ways to bring your jill out of season without breeding her. Jill jab or inplant by a vet or find someone with a vesectomised hob.
  15. They say your alright to have a poach after a week of the jill giving birth. Just distract her with a meal or treat then have a loo. Many jills kill the first - second litter they have due to inexperience.
  16. I think rats would rather bolt than fight if they can. But if cornered...
  17. Wish there was more vasec hobs around. Would rather pay a bit of fuel to meet a ferret and have some ferreting banter than pay the vets for a jag...
  18. Could end up up with blind and/or deaf ferrets, maybe worse. I wouldn't. Its even discouraged to try and breed any two silvers together because the gene pool just isnt big enough. Many are deaf.
  19. Move any jill your breeding into her own cage.
