  1. once you paid the initial start up costs falconry is really cheap. only have to pay food which like you said isnt even worth thinking about the cost. and if your like me and you save what the hawk caught through the season, during the moult you dont even need to pay for food.
  2. comes part and parcel with the sport bud, there cant be a shooter out there who hasnt done it so dont worry about it. at the end of the day you did your best to dipatch it humanely, only time ive ever felt bad was when i shot a pigeon only for it to fly off to not be found. i think because i see my hawk latched on to a rabbits head whilst its squeeling its head of i dont feel as bad as i used to when it happens as ive seen worse. but still it does put me off shooting quarry for a while
  3. yes he is my first bird bud he is 5 years old, at first i started reading books then the internet but then my dad said that a bloke who lived at the other end of the village used to fly birds but he didnt know if he still did, so i went to see him, he was flying a mates peregrine at the time as the only bird he owned was a bonded pair of a harris and a redtail. i spent a season with him and his two sons then when he moved his sons showed me the ropes from there for a short time. one was bringing on one of his dads harrisxredtails at the time and his brother flew a gos a female i believe, i the
  4. to be perfectly honest bud if you think you can manage more than 2 days on hunting then i would say your time will be wasted on a buzzard, yes people have got them entered but what if your the one of the people that dont get them entered, 18 years is a long time spent flying a useless hunter. when the time comes and you do want more out of a bird do you think you will have time for 2 birds since youve been questioning how much time you can spend with one. like crow hawker said get a male harris, same bird ive got, pleasure to just fly and a fantastic hunter you wont regret it like i guarantee
  5. the only thing is when that rabbit does bolt in front of you your gonna be kicking yourself for having a common buzzard, if in 18 years crow hawker hasnt got his hunting i don't think your gonna fair any better. maybe get a harris if your determined to fly a hawk, i just think with a common buzzard your just gonna want more after flying it for so long. at least with a harris you have the means to catch rabbits and other game should the rabbit numbers pick up or you gain more permission with more prey on it or just if the opportunity arises. regards to hunting i would say an absolute minimum of
  6. there will be alot of display birds that are never hunted, a harris will take perfectly well with never hunting they are extremely adaptable, however the sole aim of falconry is to fly the bird in pursuit of prey, so the question you need to ask yourself is, am i doing the right thing keeping a bird that is supposed to be hunted but then only keeping it to fly? is it fair on a hawk? like crow hawker said, his buzzard would fly hours on a thermal, have you the time to allow the bird to do that? a harris will fly along whilst you walk, but a harris is a bird to hunt, the only option i can see is
  7. over a £1000 easy, main costs will be aviary, bird and telemetry
  8. funerals are the worst thing ever

      Malt

Aye, got to bury my nan at some point over the next few weeks..

  9. at least your harris went doing what she did best rather than stuck in a breeding chamber like alot of hawks are. you sound like your having a great time with him roll on next season
  10. its not all about a kill at the end of the day, the flights alone are what we fly for, a kill is just a bonus. is this the only bird you fly can i ask?
  11. no wonder tackling those hares all season, all the best for the moult and next season carnt wait for it to come around again im having withdrawal symptoms ha
  12. sound like your having a great time out with him. cant wait for the moult to be over so i can be back out
  13. so is that the same that happens in mid air, thats what i thought happened originally. as the birds just fall straight out the sky. im presuming the force of the hit doesnt kill the bird but knocks it out, but then again a 2lb weight dropping on your head at 200mph is enough to kill anyone
  14. so what does happen can i ask? ive tried searching on the web but havent came up with an answer
  15. ha i see what you mean bet there fun to fly and hunt, yes definitely have to see the bird if you ever fly another one, a few members are still on about a field meet, would be nice to see a few faces off here. something definitely needs arranging
  16. some things just carnt be helped, i know anyone who takes the bird on is getting a great hawk, it is a shame, you only built her the new aviary the other week didnt you
  17. ha your all set then, but seriously i hope you sort something out what works for everyone
  18. get one of these i can see it now getting in from work baby strapped on the front lamp battery on back hawk on the left hand and a baby bottle strapped on the side, now who can say a man carnt multi task
  19. sorry to hear that mate im sure you will find someone to take her on, thats the thing with a hawk, there not just like a gun they carnt just be left until needed. you would be doing the right thing, dont like it when i hear stories of people keeping the bird in an aviary for years until their situation allows them to fly them again atb with the hawk and baby
  20. just watched a few vids of female ak hunting and all they just seem to keep catching worms and grasshoppers , that would do my f****n nut in, plus with a kestrel you just look a little poncey especially with the little white or yellow driving gloves they seem to wear ha. so when i do move onto something different from a rabbiting hawk it will probably be a spar as the flights are amazing, not as good as a falcon flight but exciting all the same. but as far as me flying a falcon im years away from that as i love my rabbit hawking and have too long a list of hawks im wanting to fly.
  21. thats strange just yesterday i was searching all over the falconry forum for people using american kestrels for hunting, but the general opinion was that they were useless and youve got a 1/100 chance of having one that hunts. once ive flown the hawks i listed earlier i would definitely like to fly something smaller for the fun and excitement of the flight probably a spar but maybe the female ak could be an option. only thing im thinking is that nothing a kestrel can catch is edible wheras a spar that can catch partridge will provide a nice meal
