I’ve been getting bait for the fox trap and also having a play with the .243 . It’s not the best tool for the job , I’ve shot a couple of pigeons which I literally couldn’t use . There was an area of about 10 sq mtrs covered in bits .

If you are like me I’m not that keen on shooting my own birds . I would be (now you are self employed) looking to sell the day and pocket the cash . If money isn’t the issue how about a raffle on here for charity?

Future gold medal ? Found this little one tucked away while I was spraying off some weeds . I wouldn’t go this close normally but I nearly stood on it .

Best time of the day ?

My Grandad used to grow his own tobacco, I remember it drying in his shed , he used to like a good shag ?

If you haven’t heard “ a country boy can survive “ by Hank Williams jr I suggest you all give it a listen . It’s now on my iPhone and I stick it on in the truck on the way to work. It’s lyrics are quite apt for today’s uncertain times . Stick in there guys and remember

I’m dead fussy about cleaning the bore on all my rifles . Even after I have run a bore snake through after shooting when I give the bore a “proper” clean the patches still come out dirty and blackish . So a bore snake is in no way a substitute for a solvent based clean but rather part of a routine of care .
-
Bore snakes are a good idea provided you avoid dragging the crown and pull it straight. I was discussing cleaning with custom rifle builder Steve Bowers and he recommends their use . I doubt they will remove much copper but it’s the combustion chemicals that can cause real damage . He recommended a couple of swipes of a bore snake after every time you let off a couple of shots before it goes back in the cabinet then give it a proper clean after every twenty or so . The main thing he stressed to me was the importance of removing the sound mod before you put the rifle

I got a bottle of KG 12 big bore cleaner years ago , and I’m still only half way through it , I use a nylon brush now and leave it in the barrel a while to work it’s magic . I’ve no experience with a HMR but it certainly works on my centre fires .

Had a look around the cut fields last night and only saw one , which disappeared through a hedge and despite my best squeaks didn’t reappear. The night wasn’t in vain as I managed to locate a litter of cubs . I nearly ran over a little cub as it ran in front of the truck up the wheeling’s on the hedge line. I also saw another cub in a different area which gives me a good indication where to set my traps.

Well what do you know , we’ve had a few fields cut yesterday and gathered up today . We already had a few fields cut weeks ago , and some that are a few weeks off being cut . I will be out tonight.

Not yet , seen plenty of does and youngsters . They won’t be far away .

It’s good for the morning, you can get in there before first light and watch the wood come to life . Muntjac, Roe and Fallow get on the feeders and there is the chance of Charlie using the track . It gets dark too early in the evening.

Been having a look around the shoot this morning. Some pictures of the woods . I love the smell of wild garlic .

I was the same , have a go Si , it literally took me Less than an hour . -
Got a bit bored today . I have been thinking of getting something to hold the rifles steady when I clean them , but I have always just held them and managed without. But with night vision on the rifle and battery’s to change I needed something. I had a root around them shed and found some bits of plywood and set about making a stand . As you can see I’m no carpenter but I’m happy enough with the results and it didn’t take long ( I know it looks like it too ) . It’s 500mm L 220w the front is 340 H and the back 290 the V notches are 110 in depth but the front is about 50mm h

Nice photos Stavross, I start back full time on the shoot Monday . First job is locating litters of cubs and getting them gone . I’ve already been sorting cover crops out . Getting the weeds sprayed off and getting the ground ready for drilling Maize. I’ve got a bit of time now to get the pens up together and the predators sorted out . I love this time of year . So much to see and do much beauty to see in nature, sometimes you have to remind yourself to stop every now and then and just appreciate it . I will get my iPhone out and take some photos and put them up , I’m no Da

rearing shed
shovel leaner replied to shcl21's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Before you spend time and money making a shed and day shelter , have a real good think . I don’t want to be a spoil sport but there is a hell of a lot to learn about rearing pheasants . You will need to be with them all the time to make sure they don’t get too hot or too cold . Too much day light and they start to eat each other . When to take them off crumb , foamy shit caramel coloured shit you name it . You need to talk to a keeper and ask some advice , but don’t be surprised if you come away thinking that it’s a bad idea .- 4 replies

Montjac male mystery anatomy identification.
shovel leaner replied to misattuned's topic in New Member Introductions
I always thought faggots were a West Country thing , Might be wrong . I would guess the organ you describe is the liver . And as for the brain , personally it would be more effort than it’s worth to remove it , but it would be edible . And I “don’t “ want to know what you were doing with your nieces placenta.? -
Montjac male mystery anatomy identification.
shovel leaner replied to misattuned's topic in New Member Introductions
Males and females have caul , it’s a sort of stomach membrane , the butchers near me cover faggots in it . Not much gets wasted . -
Hi there , hope you are enjoying your new dog . In answer to your question, I don’t want to get into semantics but a Lurcher is a “type” , it’s what you get if you cross a running dog like a greyhound or whippet with another breed , say for example a collie . The pups such a mating produce would be referred to as Lurcher’s. Looking at the photos I can see that it is very narrow in the head and chest and has a deep chest and narrow waist . So the possible mating could be With a greyhound or greyhound cross . Which would in fact make your dog a “Lurcher” of sorts . But unles

I remember when jacks game first came out . I never used to watch television in them days , too busy getting up to all sorts of mischief. But I would make a point of dropping whatever I was doing and getting back to watch it around my mates house . The Ferretting episode will always stick in my mind . They had a couple of Jack Russell’s which marked the holes . I didn’t have a terrier at the time and i decided that what I needed was a jack to mark the holes to save me time netting unoccupied holes ( even though you can see if a holes used or not ) . None of m

Soaking it in saltwater is what I do . Something I heard was that butter milk is a good thing to soak it in overnight to get that “rabbity” twang .
