I’ve handled most corvids , the only one that I would say you have to “glove up “ for is a Raven. I found that out through personal experience.... it drew blood ? “ooooouch”!!!

Wearing a glove ? Have you got soft hands Derv ?

You are probably right . But he’s been a good call bird and by some strange logic I figured he’d earned his freedom. It’s not happened before , but it felt like the right thing to do in this instance.
-
Well I reckon I must be . Today I let my call bird from my last Larson trap fly free . The Magpie has been catching well for a few weeks and I , with its help have caught a great many magpies around the shoot . I’ve not caught a magpie for a while now . And with the Larson traps the ladder trap and shooting. I have reduced the magpie population to an acceptable level . Normally I would have “euthanised “ the call bird , but he has helped me and I gave him his freedom . Seeing him fly off made me feel good . What are these strange feelings? Am I turning into a tree hugger ? F@cking hope not . I

They are getting desperate. The cull has rolled out over most of the country now . There are only a handful of these people out there and for all their threats and shouting and screaming, unsolicited telephone calls , and hate mail . They actually do nothing, I don’t know anyone involved in the cull who has been physically hurt by them . It’s all wind and piss . If they turn up where culling is being carried out then the culling stops for that night , but that’s it , they can’t be everywhere and it will just take place the following night or the night after . They have lost . Badger

It’s called buck fever . I’ve had guys who can punch paper with the best of them , but put a buck or in this case a fox in front of them and they get nervous and they forget all the principles of marksmanship , breathing etc and fluff the shot . I seldom let anyone shoot foxes on the shoot I keeper or any of my permissions , I get really ratty if someone misses and educates a fox . At least if there is any misses now it’s always my fault .

Gloucestershire has a couple of rural crime officers. They are dedicated officers whose role is reducing rural crime , theft of equipment and poaching basically. The success of the WhatsApp has been very good . If a dodgy looking vehicle is spotted, a picture or details are posted for all 200 or so members to see and keep an eye out for . The police are being really proactive and they share their success on the the WhatsApp, you very often see illegal coursers vehicles being seized and loaded on to a tow truck . Sunday mornings are the usual busy coursing times and the polic

Have you seen some of Bidens gaffes? They are hilarious, my favourite is “we are choosing truth , over fact “ . You couldn’t write the shit that comes out of his mouth .

Let them nab away . I’ve got a clear conscience. I do everything by the book , I intend on keeping my ticket. If getting stopped or photographed is the price I’ve got to pay for a safer countryside and relatively low crime rate I’m prepared to put up with it .
-
I buy and sell people like you , so back off !!!! All this fame hasn’t gone to my head or anything.... honest .

It’s a rural crime stoppers WhatsApp, it’s only farmers , landowners and keepers on it . It’s off there now , but not before a few other keepers saw it . I’ve had a few piss taking texts and calls , as you can imagine . I shake my head .

They cut a field of wheat the day before yesterday. It’s part of the estate but it’s a little way above the shoot itself . The ground is well drained and it got planted last year , so harvest was at the normal time , unlike the rest of the estate which is late . I expected to see foxes on this field but all I saw was a herd of Fallow, about 15 animals. I don’t know what it’s like around other parts of the country, but the game dealers here are not taking venison at the moment. So if I do shoot some I am going to have to butcher if myself and give it away . I also managed to get

Kick like a Blackpool donkey........

My Old Remington had 24 “ barrels and handled like a dream for quick snap shooting. I went on a walked up woodcock day last year , with my 32” +external Teague chokes which make it really 33” MK38 . Although heavy I soon got used to having to pushing that big harder to swing on the birds that flushed near me . But I’m glad I had it for those distant crossers and long range birds . But some of the really close quick birds were impossible with that gun . But on balance I think I preferred to shoot the longer stuff and I just like to stick to one gun for everything now , even if it me -

Agree with you , I can speak from experience as I’ve had a Beretta A303 and a remy 1100 , both second hand , both cycled everything . If I had to choose one I’d have the Beretta. Not speaking from experience, but anecdotally. The new Brownings and Winchester semi autos take some beating . I don’t have an auto at the moment but you have got me thinking. I only have my Miroku which I use on game and clays . I should get one for fox bolting and fox drives . And the odd bit of wildfowling . Got to say I’m not a fan of semi autos on the clay ground as they spit the cases a -

I always refer to the school holidays as “silly season” . We always get more people on the estate , mostly well behaved, some not so . I mentioned in another post about a family surrounded by cattle with dad bravely up a tree . We get picnickers leaving their rubbish, gangs of Young people playing music and smoking and drinking , also leaving little silver gas bottles everywhere. The list of nonsense goes on . Now with this hot weather it’s brought out the swimmers.......naked swimmers . Now if wouldn’t be too bad if they all looked like page 3 girls ....... but they don’t . The last lot were

A productive night out Walshie.? I’m puzzled by this tree thing though, how does that happen? Surely if there is a large tree between him and the fox , he won’t see the fox ? -
Thing is sausage, our environment is as alien to them as theirs is to us . If I ever venture into a town or city , I am a fish out of water . I don’t like crowds or lots of traffic . I don’t blame anyone wanting to enjoy the countryside. As long as folks follow the rules it’s a great place to be . I often have a natter to the holiday makers and they are always asking questions about pheasants and birds and deer , and what the rifles are for. And I get a kick out of telling them . Townies find my job and life fascinating and lots of them say how lucky am to work in such a beautiful place . Unti

Put the last of my pellets out this morning. Birds are 12 weeks or so old now and are going on to wheat . I’m sure we waste about a ton of wheat on the changeover, as the birds chuck out the wheat from the minolas looking for pellets. They are getting all over the place now, everywhere I look there are poults . Water is a big draw for them in this dry weather and every ditch and stream is seeing the birds pay a visit . It’s nice to see them loafing about and dusting , not a care in the world . There are a few holiday cottages on the estate and they cater for families, and
