I see them every now and then on Preloved and Pets4homes and similar sites.

I always have a bowl of water out in the garden room for if the dogs are thirsty, always from the tap. However, they rarely drink from it and invariably prefer to drink the rusty coloured rain water which collects in an old wooden planter full of decaying logs. Weird!

The bloke who did that video is the same one who made the video which encouraged me to go for the vivobarefoot tracker forest esc. Comfiest boots I've ever had. Not worn them through the winter yet so it'll be interesting to see how they do. Not sure if I'm hoping they manage the bad weather or not as I miss my lundhags a bit.

I see a slow worm almost every morning. It comes out from the leaf litter around the copper beech in my back garden and basks in the sun at roughly the same time that I'm feeding the dogs. Lots of adders and quite a few grass snakes near where I live too. Several of the adders are black adders too. A few years ago I was walking the dogs in the local forest near Rowlands Castle and noticed a snake out of the corner of my eye. Something about it seemed odd but I couldn't think why. I walked over to take a closer look but it became aware of me and slithered off. I initially presumed it

Looked like a typical working beardie i.e. shorter coat (without bows etc) and loose eyed. Didn't watch the whole thing as we turned over to watch Downton.

What are these ones like? I started wearing more lightweight footwear with inov8s about fifteen years ago, before I moved to the Altras. Unfortunately, I now find them a bit too narrow for me. Having said that, I've not tried them without a footbed. My current pair have the grapheme impregnated sole. Genius idea. Last so much longer than the Altras.

I'm presuming that was a typo. In which case yes; it was a worker.

You should try non waterproof. I was dubious at first but your feet will thank you for it. Less chance of sweaty feet or athletes foot and waterproof trainers simply don't make sense...as soon as that water gets in over the top...we're all doomed!

I thought some of you might be interested to know there's been a working bearded collie (and a huntaway too) on tonight's Countryfile. It's a feature about a farm in the Mendips. Enjoy!

I spoke too soon about the amazing grip. Slipped on a piece of wet wood today, managed to avoid falling into a huge bramble patch but slammed my left hand, thumb first, into the ground to soften my fall. Ripped the edge of the thumb nail and wobbled straight home holding the thumb nail in place between my second and third fingers. Ouch!

Wow! That's an amazing looking animal.

So far so good. My wife bought them for me in March for my birthday and they're still going strong. I'm pretty sure it's one of the models which can be resoled too. I've got a pair of the winter ones too (I think it's called the tracker FG) they're comfy too but mine was the first version of it and they had a reputation for getting gaps between the sole and the top of the shoe (which happened to mine) so the water gets in. In comparison the tracker forest esc doesn't have a waterproof lining so you just use renapur on it, which works wonders. The other thing I don't like about the

I usually wear 'minimalist' footwear nowadays. I started because of my bad back when my physio pointed out that the damage to my back had caused me to stoop to avoid the pain and that zero-drop footwear would be beneficial. I now spend almost all my time in either altra lone peaks or vivobarefoots. My current favourites are vivobarefoot tracker forest esc. It's like wearing moccasins but with amazing grip. The only problem I've found (if you can call it a problem) is that, as my feet have spread out in them, even the altras now don't feel wide enough so I have to wear all my altras withou

Thanks darbo, that's the one!

Some of you might be interested in a video I saw recently. It was of a pure heeler called Flint (I think) which is used as a deer dog in New Zealand. I can't remember the website but I'm sure someone else will be able to find it and put up a link. I think it was about five minutes long.

Yeah, my kelpies are similar. The first time my first kelpie went for a swim he was touch dry less than five minutes later. I used to say to people that his grandmother must have been a non-stick teflon frying pan. When I lived in Coniston, my ex-girlfriend's sister had a collie x samoyed which she'd drop off at her great-aunts house. This was back in the day when people left their doors unlocked and the door was usually open too and the dog would spend the whole day either asleep on the font door step or in a bed it had dug out in the lee of the hedge. In Iris Combes book (Herding D

Poo! That's put me off getting some chickens again. We lost our last lot several years ago and the wife and kids were keen to get some more. I used to house them in an eglu and run (but let them free range during the day). However, I thought of placing the eglu inside the old dog run (12' x 4') to keep them more secure, but your thoughts on red mite are making me have second thoughts.

I started a similar thread in the gundog section after recently meeting several smooth and wirehaired vizslas. However, partly because nobody added to it, but also because I've broadened my thoughts since then, I thought I'd ask a similar question here instead. We all know that there are several breeds which come in a variety of coat types depending on either where they're expected to work or where they live. Obvious examples would be smooth and wirehaired German pointers or smooth and wirehaired terriers of various breeds. Also, the breed which got me pondering this in the first place, t

I blame brexit. I'll get my coat.

I'm in a similar, though different, boat. I had a semi-forced retirement three years ago (at the age of almost fifty one) as the infant school where I'd been working as the in-house supply was "taken over" by the juniors next door. New broom and all that jazz. I can start drawing my teaching pension next year (when I turn fifty five). I'm loving being the house-husband. I could never understand the kids at school who were restless to get back to school after the six week summer holiday because they were bored. I could've spent weeks more, wandering the local fields and the disused railwa

I could have put this question in a number of places as I suppose it relates to different coat types in a number of breeds. However, the reason I've placed it here is because I was recently talking to an East European lady about the vizsla she had with her. The bitch in question was wire haired, although I didn't realise this at first as it was one of the smoother ones with hardly any furnishing on the face and just a few longer hairs on the back. My question is, how does each type (smooth and wire haired) cope in different weathers/seasons? Now I understand that breeds which come i

I was once chatting to a whippet breeder (pure and crosses) who said that she invariably found the worst feet on her cross-breds. Her belief was that working and coursing bred whippets had good feet as they ran on a variety of surfaces whereas racing bred greyhounds didn't have to have such good feet. She was quick to point out that this wasn't always the case, simply that it was her findings based on the average foot quality of each type.

This morning, just as I was leaving the wood, I could hear several crows heckling something. By the time I reached the road the noise had become louder and was suddenly joined by a distressed blood-curdling scream. Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw a huge bird (mobbed by crows) taking off from the trees on the very edge of the wood. For a fraction of a second I thought 'bloody hell! the app was right! an escaped booted eagle has been living in the woods!' But then I realised what it was...a heron.? They always look so much bigger up close. It flew off with two crows in pursuit and one ca

That's it! I give up! Last Sunday...booted eagle in the local wood.?
