  1. I've always got mine from the local Jollyes pet store as I didn't have enough freezer space for a bulk buy. Previously used Natures Menu but my local store has now started stocking a lot more BARF foods and I've swapped over to Durham. I don't know how it compares price-wise to others, but it's cheaper than the stuff I was using and my two seem to be doing well on it. Only stocks the 500g blocks though, so I may go direct to them instead to get the other stuff too.
  2. Everything was going so well. After catching her first squirrel during the Easter break she's followed it up with three more during the following fortnight. However, less than two hours after her most recent catch she decided to pop into a field that she's never bothered to go in before (there's nothing of interest in it, whereas the wood on the other side has pheasant and squirrel so she's always more interested in that side). Anyway, the field is surrounded by three barbed wire fences at this point. The first has collapsed and is mere inches from the ground, the second she cleared
  3. Another thumbs up for the Scout from me too. I've also got their slightly smaller version (simply because it fits in a pocket better) but I usually prefer to use the original one.
  4. Definitely. Sometimes there's nothing you can do to shift them but other times they'll panic at the slightest thing. I've caught several from literally shaking them out of smaller trees. One one occasion, may years ago now, there was one big old oak tree on its own with a good forty or fifty feet to the nearest next trees. I pretended I was going to climb up (even though there were no branches low enough for me to grab hold of) by simply placing my hands on the trunk and lifting my leg up. The squirrel must have thought I'm safer over in those trees than this one on its tod and took a flying j
  5. I guess that how you deal with it might depend on the reasoning behind it. By this I mean that it could be caused by either frustration (I can't get it) or excitement (I want to get it). Unlike the majority of dogs mentioned on here, mine very rarely whine in pursuit in woodland (frustration) as that's the only place they're likely to catch ?. But when they tree a squirrel they sometimes bark (excitement) because they know that will sometimes work to shift the quarry.
  6. My young kelpie bitch recently caught her first squirrel too. Hopefully it'll be the first of many.? Edited to add: she caught her second less than three hours after typing that.? I'm very happy! Two days before her catch we met a couple in my local wood with a dog which its owners said had caught, "too many squirrels to count." It looked like a scruffy version of an Ozzy pig dog (c. 19" tall, pricked ears, white with tan patches) and was a blend of Jack Russel, English bulldog and bull terrier. They told me there was no point in them trying to get a replacement as they couldn't guar

    Dog v horse

I had similar while returning from a walk in the forest with my kelpies at the weekend. Stupid woman with a staffy screaming at me to put my dogs on a lead. When I asked why she shouted, "He'll attack. I promise he'll attack!" I replied, "That's OK, mine won't. They're sensible enough to avoid it." But the silly woman was having none of it. The irony was that she was on one side of the bridge over the motorway and I assumed she was waiting to come over. I gave up arguing with her and went back over to the forest side. Five minutes later and there was still no sign of her so I came over th
  8. That's the kind of response I like. Colin Dexter would have been impressed.?
  9. That's a good point. I was wondering if it was because of when the species were introduced to the U.K. i.e in the same way that ox, deer, sheep etc are Anglo Saxon because they farmed them (I think) whereas beef, venison and mutton are french because the Normans said, "Thanks very much; I'll eat that!"
  10. I was shouting at the TV, "I don't believe it, even David Attenborough's getting it wrong!"?
  11. Am I the only person who gets annoyed by errors in natural history programmes. My wife says I'm overreacting ( which, to be honest, is probably correct) but it still riles me. The current one which has caught my attention is calling young roe deer fawns instead of kids. I've now heard it twice in the last few weeks on two different programmes: "Wild Isles" on BBC1 and Channel 5s "Secret Life of the Forest." It's alright, I've calmed down now. I think I just needed to get it off my chest.?
  12. Couldn't agree more. You may sometimes find yourself saying, "If only it was a bit faster," but you have a lot more fun trying and a lot less trips to the vet.
  13. I was stopped by the police near Coniston once and they asked what I had in my old gas mask bag. I think they were expecting me to admit to having a couple of rabbits or some purse nets as I had my 3/4 collie with me. They looked surprised when I replied, "A tin of oil pastels and a sketchbook."?
  14. You're welcome.? I've been meaning to put it on ebay for years but keep putting it off in the hope that the rabbits will come back enough for me to need ferrets again. Lo and behold my kelpie bitch bushed out two from a huge bramble bank this morning. I think that's the first time she's seen rabbits other than when we go to Dartmoor.? I continue to live in hope.
  15. Thanks comanche. In that case I think I've got the early mk 3.
  16. Thanks whitefeet. Once you've found out then let me know. ?
  17. Thanks gnipper. I'm still waiting for whitefeet to come back to see if he wants it.?
  18. Whitefeet, mine has a number three on the back of the grey box. The collar goes through slots at either end of the box and covers the box when it's being worn i.e. you see the collar rather than the box. When I looked online, all the mark three collars had a large black cylindrical box but mine is a completely different shape. I can't guarantee it works, as it's not been used for about ten years, but PM me your address if you'd like it for your daughter.
  19. Thanks everyone. I'll check again and then let whitefeet know.?
  20. I thought mine was a mark 3 but maybe it isn't then. Mine is a light grey almost cuboid shape which slides apart to reveal the battery compartment. ? Edited to add that I've had a look on t'internet and I think mine is the mark 2. Sorry whitefeet.
  21. Hi, I've checked and I do have a collar. Just to make sure, are we talking just the collar i.e. the black synthetic type with the buckle which houses the battery compartment which slides off in two parts?
  22. I think I may have a mk 3 collar somewhere. Not 100% certain though. I'll have a search tomorrow and let you know.?
  23. Apart from that eejit from Hampshire you took out once...the one with the leaky boot and the crap black and tan prick eared sheepdog. He was a waste of space.?
  24. I think I'd have to agree with that. Although the two other beardie crosses I had were more sensitive (possibly because of the border blood) she was definitely less 'attached' to me. I was just the bloke who took her out and let her off the lead. Well' maybe that's a tad oversimplified but the beardie crosses with border blood were definitely out to impress in comparison. Of the three I'd say the one I gelled with best was probably the one with equal amounts of beardie and border, but that could easily be for any number of other reasons e.g. he was male, he only had 1/4 greyhound etc.?
  25. I know exactly what you all mean, but I think it all comes down to personality (or rather how your personality gels with the temperament of the dog). My first three lurchers had varying amounts of beardie in them and I personally found the more border they had, the more sensitive they became.
