hope the dog turns up, feckers want kneecapping

never got to hunt pigs when i was in Oz but one old boy i met said that when he was younger they used to use bull terrier crossed with cattle dogs. the cattle dogs are tough as old boots, but just added a bit more discretion to the bullies which used to tear into the pigs without thinking and too often got shredded by the pigs. he also used this cross for hunting out and driving wild scrub cattle which he said could be damn nasty as well

it won't change anything to do with work except some dogs will be more prone to puttig on weight so you will have to watch diet/exercise. dont know what difference it would make to get the dog working first then wait two years?

phil lloyd did a book a couple of years ago which i found very enjoyable, moochers stories or something like that. think hemaybe has new one out now?

did a lot of deer years ago but i'm getting too old now. and i dont fancy doing any more bird LOL. muntjac are surprisingly fast over a short distance and can turn a bit as well. specially when put up in the open and know where safety is they could be a bit tricky but pushed OUT of cover a dog would get up to them pretty quick. once the dog had one the fun really started cause they are tough little feckers and have skin like leather and will fight like b*****ds. seen a few dogs severly chivved up by them. seen bucks take the fight to a dog too. little deer with big hearts!! water deer could ge

skycat do you think there would be any benefit for steveclark to have his bitch spayed?

wash it twice a day with a weak salt water solution, then dry thoroughly. when it is dry you can put vaseline on just to stop any dirt getting in. if you put the vaseline on when it is still a bit damp you will just seal the water in which won't help the healing process

Cruel to bring dog inside during day / evening when they sleep outside.
beast replied to Matt3699's topic in General Talk
when we were kids me and my brothers would sneak out and bring some of the dogs in because the house was SO COLD and they warmed the beds for us before we put them back out. when it got really bad we would keep them in all night. i'm sure the old man knew really but turned a blind eye to it -
once it gets going really hot i load mine with the biggest log i can fit into it then shut the air intake to very low, and this will go at least eight hours. guess different burners work a bit differently?

what about a wood burner?

Training in the dark
beast replied to Rogue and running dog's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
i think sometimes people overcomplicate things, there is no rel difference between a dog hunting up at night or in the day, it all boils down to one thing, the recall. if a dog is trained properly to recall it will do it day, or night. even if a dog is used for daytime mooching it shouldnt make a difference it should still come when it is called, day or night -
wont make any difference to work. sometimes neutered dogs are more prone to getting overweight so you may have to watch their diets

if you miss a vital spot with a fmj then you stand a pretty good chance of the bullet passing straight through and just leaving a thin tunnel through the animal. it will possibly not be a killing shot, and even if it is then this may mean the animal running on further before bleeding out. stick with expanding imo
-
the only thing i would add is dont take her hunting until you are pleased with her recall or she will just learn to take herself hunting without you...

yeah sadly the internet makes a grand stage for self promotion at times. and there is almost a kind of advertising that goes on, such a dog posted time after time with big bags and then 12 months later its up for stud or in pup. which is fine, but it doesnt mean that dogs which arent promoted the same way are no good. personally i had a spell of over 15 years when i didnt evr hunt with anybody else, i got so fed up with the amount of bullshit and various other issues (people coming back to visit permission on their own and uninvited, people slipping dogs on sheep when in my company, even a blo

depends on the ground. a bit of frost on ground with good amounts of grass, or in woods, has never caused my dogs problems. but plough or drill or say winter wheat froze hard can be murder

i grew up in east london and i used to hunt fox rat squirrel and the very occasional rabbit in the big old cemeteries, railway banks, allotments and some of the bigger parks. used to get the train out to richmond park but mad esure the dogs were steady round the deer - there was a captive herd in greenwich park then which i used to break the dogs off deer, dont know if they still have them. i used to take the train to sevenoaks livestock market with the pups and all the beasts milling round blaring and shoting soon put the pups off sheep and cattle after a few visits. kept a few hens in my yar

22-250 , 223 , or 22 swift
beast replied to riflehunter583's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i had use of a ruger 223 for some years,a nd found it excellent. but im no great expert to be honest, just got on really well with this particular weapon. -
there were muntjac in some of the north london suburbs over 15 years ago, they followed the railways as there is plenty of cover on the embankments etc just like the foxes did years ago. most of the bigger parks and canal banks and so on in the northern outskirts of london now have muntjac, and most folk dont even know they are there. even out here the numbers of fallow, muntjac and chinese water deer are ridiculous, getting hard to find a place to exercise the dogs without coming across something with hooves. and a couple of weeks ago i found a dead male roe fawn on the road, first one in th

England judging terriers/lurchers
beast replied to sillydilly's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
dont judge any more, but did a few smaller shows some years ago. on the couple of occasions when mates turned up they both came and said hello, and said they wouldn't put me in an awkward position so didnt enter their dogs. i said that it wasnt awkward for me as i knew they would take my decisions well, but both said that it might look wrong to onlookers if they won. fair play to them. i was lucky enough to serve as steward under some very knowledgeable and experienced judges, and learned a lot about the art of judging, and proper conformation. i suggest that if anyone is asked to judge a show -
some good advice here. one little thing which i like to do is that once the pup seems good on the lead with the sheep, i put a very long line on it (50 feet or so) to trick him into thinking there is no lead on. i know that maybe i worry too much about this, but it allows me to feel more confident about the pups likely reaction to the sheep before taking the final plunge of turnin him loose. good luck with your pup, let us know how you get on

had a bitch a few years ago bred from two very decent "bitza" lurchers, both big strong racey dogs, and she ended up 20"tts and 42lb. looked like a beddy cross collie with a few extra muscles. made a decent ferret dog but NOT what you would have wanted from the two parents. i thi k the more diferent breeds in the mix, the less predictable and more variation in the litter. but of course, a lot of dogs classed as wastage still have a use , as a ferreting/bushing or even rough shooting companion

have never done a whole lot of lamping, normally just pick up three or four when i need some dog food, but had a first cross collie grey that caught 17 on the bounce working with ferrets, no nets. but she was a VERY good dog, and I'd give my eye teeth for another like her.
