very nice, thank you. remember some years ago there was a supposed wild big cat up in the forestry somewhere in northern scotland mgiht have been caithness? killing deer but when it started on the sheep they had a drive and shot a big black lurcher. should have stuck to the deer, but i suppose these days the rspca would have prosecuted it...............

nice old tale, thanks for that. lot of stories of witch hares (were-hares) in east anglia, reckon some of the old boys i heard them from still believed they are true stories today. they had some funny old superstitious ways in the villages as well as the inbreeding!

thanks for that, a lad i know failed because he said he was happy to shoot a deer target but hadnt noticed a road behind it!!!!!

sometimes putting a dog in a pen to get bullied by sheep wont work because they react very differently when sheep are actually running away. a lot of adolescent dogs mess up like this and can be retrained with a firm consistent approach, but stock worrying is one of the only times i would consider using a shock collar. they do work but you have to get your timing EXACTLY right or you can cause a lot of different problems. if you can find an experienced trainer to train you how to use one properly you will probably only ned to use it a couple of times, although as i say i woyld only use it as a

R.s.p.c.a case Lurcher man needs help!
beast replied to baldockbanks courser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
sounds like the rspca are running this as a test case. they are willing to invest a lot of money to secure a conviction if they can because then THEY WILL HAVE LEGAL PRECEDENT which means that ANYBODY with similar photos could be in a lot of danger. so the lads who put questionable images on the internet can easily be picke d off and they will then be forced to prove their innocence in effect, rather than the rspca prove their guilt. one question, the rspca have no powers to raid a premisies it must be done under a police warrant so how come the police decided not to push CPS to prosecute? so -
tomo i thi nk the maoris brought dogs pigs and rats and maybe goats but i stand to be corrected. not sure if there were no mammals at all before man came...........might have been bats. sorry just being an arse!!

nice work. how did you find it, difficult or not too bad?
-
just been looking through the hancock topic and a couple of people said how his dogs are not worked and so the pups are from unproven parents. fair point. my question isn't just about hancock 9before we go down that road!!) but which would you choose, 1. a pup from two decent working parents but neither had produced any pups before for you to look at OR 2. a pup from unworked parents, but the pup was from a repeat mating and the older brothers and sisters were good workers? personally i think i would take the 2nd option opinions?

yeah you should tell everything, i have some convictions, nothing too serious but still more than just a parking ticket, but i've been well behaved for many years now and they didnt hold it against me when i put in for my fac. also what they really want evidance of is that you are not a danger to yourself and others; so make sure your referees really stress that you are sane and they have known you for years and you come from a stable family background and all the rest. and if you can manage it, go and do a course for a couple of days with a reputable instructor just to show you are serious.

i see that first link doesnt work, wonder if the bloke has closed his account? could be a sign of guilt...............

i certainly am not up to fighting these days and even when i was young i dont think id fancy trying my hand against a bunch of blokes, travellers or not. but if i knew where my stolen dogs were hid i would call the police. have had my share of problems with them in the past and done a bit of time and the police arent exactly friends but if thats what it took, then so be it. and if it meant saying i'd been shot at or anything else just to make them attend then thats what i would do. hope the dogs get home safe and something really bad happens to the thieves

i dont knows why this cross isnt more popular, seena few years ago all were good, a couple were as near as damn it perfect. hancocks dont do them as they dont often throw rough coats but i wonder that folks with genuine first crosses dont put them across greyhounds because for me this is the nearest youll get to a genuine allrounder from a collie cross

what age can a pup leave its mum
beast replied to fieldsportsman's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
i think a pup should be weaned and away from its dam for at least a week before being rehomed. whilst some pups take everything in their stride, for some the stress of being pulled from their dam added to the shock of moving home all at once can be too much and they get not only physically ill (usually stomach upsets) but also can become nervous and withdrawn. wean pups about 6-7 weeks, move them on a week or so later -
if you say the dog has been fine in a different kennels but not this one, then it does suggest a problem with this particular kennel. have a chat with them, point out the problems with the dog. it may be neglect or may be some other cause; perhaps the dog was next to a particularly noisy or aggressive dog which caused stress? or a bitch in season? or some kind of noisey machinery? in any case they should really have noticed and rung you to say they werent happy with the dogs condition, and possibly should have got a vet out to look. they fact they didnt do these things rings alarm bells with m

just chase them up, they have to give you a good reason not to grant it. they do make mistakes, and if your sensible they will generally sort it out

or you would at the very least look for good conformation............... or proven working parents........i think those are two good reasons that the "low minded" people have certain opinions on show-bred dogs some show dogs might well be good workers, but a lot more are not!!

bitch doesnt know its done wrong, it cowers because it knows he is going to be cross, and thats probably why it wont come back. i bet it gets loads of praise when it catches and brings back, and it gets praised when it comes back in the day and that is why it does these two things well. i suggest your mate starts to hold his temper and take the bitch out at night with no quarry or other dogs about and just patiently works on recall in the dark with no distractions. and he'll end up with a dog which comes back and doesnt cower!!!!!

i'm no expert but i usedto use a ruger 223 with a stainless barrel and synthetic stock, i found it a really good rifle but i have limited experience of other makes so its hard to make a good comparison

they were bred from show borzois and show whippets to try to make miniature borzoi-type. interesting looking hounds, but you'd be better off with a small lurcher if you want a working dog

i use old duvets, couple of quid from the charity shop and just bin them when they get too dirty

What do you do with the rabbits you catch?
beast replied to Ipswhip's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i have a local butcher who will give £2 for a dressed rabbit, and will take 25 a week. next comes another who pays £1.50 gutted with skin still on. couple of old folk i give them to for free, any left go for dog or ferret food as i dont eat them myself. used to sell a few to a local wildlife park when i lived in norfolk for their otters, place has closed now. always worth asking zoos or safari parks if they want to buy any for feeding to their aniamls, some will pay a couple of quid each but some want a guaranteed supply -
thats one of the north american deer, think its a white tail rather than a mule deer, judging from the antlers. certainly not native to UK, and ive never seen one in any zoos or deer parks so god knows where they will be controlling them!!!!!!!!!

it all depends who it is. i pulled up at some of my permission a few years ago and there were lamps on, so i went to see what was going on. as soon as i was spotted all 3 lamps were shone on me, and instead of running off they ran towards me and i was set upon by three irish gentlemen without even a word being exchanged. i ended up in casualty, but at least i broke one of the b*****ds noses (i think!). anyone who is respectful i would turn a blind eye, but that experience has made me a bit worried to go and find out if they are decent folk or not. if it happened again i would simply call the
