  1. He is mainly whippet with a touch of greyhound and collie in the mix he is a touch bigger nowadays as that is a older photo atb
  2. Had the young pup out on the lamp again earlier just training him up on the lamp really only been out half a dozen times on the lamp and had about 3 or four slips to date not quiet got the jist of following the beam but keen enough. Went over to a local spot where he has run before as the weather was decent for the lamp. First field nothing about but he was showing some interest headed over the brow of the hill and few bunnies sitting close to hedge couldn't get close enough to get a decent slip though as tempting as it was Doubled back around the field and couple of bunnies sitting out a bit
  3. I have always found the retrieve thing interesting. I have changed tack a bit with my current pup (first runner I have raised myself) he liked to carry things around naturally and as much as it can be annoying when they grab anything around the house, I actually always encouraged him to bring things to me no matter what he had. He has grown out of the nicking anything stage now and just brings his toys occasionally when in the house but I still give him plenty of praise. The whole chucking a ball in the yard thing is fine if the dog likes it, if not which some in my experience have found don't
  4. My old mans current dog knocking on a bit nowadays but was a real pleasure to watch work in his heyday. Still puts my pup to shame a bit at times, line breed from my old mans track dog in the 1980s who also worked a fair bit in the field atb
  5. Meant to add there was an article about a game keeper in the countryman few years back who owned a bouvier for tracking a x's his with a greyhound to keep a pup. Looked a nice pup at 6 month from the pics but not seen anything about how it or the litter progressed since atb.
  6. They tend to look a hell of alot bigger than there are due to there thick coat. Some of the show stuff is huge but still under the jacket alot smaller set than a rottie . My bitch when I used to run her alot (jogging) was around 30kg and 24 tts which isn't that big really, fair head on her though, the working type bouvier from the continent tend to be smaller size. I will try and get a pic up of her trimmed short. She is nearing the end nowadays but has taught me alot and I doubt very much I will ever have a more loyal dog atb
  7. Yes don't think he will lack brains and should have some a good jacket on him. My bitch is the as tough as old boots, the bouvier are certainly bright maybe a bit too bright for my liking at times atb
  8. Be interesting to see how the pup turns out I have a pure bouvier from workin lines and have often wonder what they would be like crossed to a running dog, they certainly have some plus points and few Minus as well though lol atb with the pup matt
  9. His number is in the back of this weeks countrymans advertising a whippet litter atb
  10. Beenner I think that is a fair point and anybody can buy what they like with their own money. But the fact is you can get a well bred lurcher pup for very little which will with respect most likely be just as capable if not more so than a whippet which costs a lot more. For me personally the decision wasn't about ability full stop or cost i just thought to myself if I bred a litter of pups (any breed) what would be the focus of rehoming them? And I would be far more interested in them finding a good working home where they will get to do what they breed to do but looked after well. I spoke to
  11. I always fancied a whippet but didn't really have the time when in the armed forces to work a runner so I waited it out until I left a few years back. Despite always wanting one in the end I couldn't justify paying out a lot of money or infact even the same money when I knew deep down I could probably source a more capable lurcher with plenty of whippet blood in it. I ended up paying next to nothing for a lurcher pup with mainly whippet in it and a touch of collie and grew, I am happy with my choice he has ended up 22tts so no bigger than some of the eligididly ped whippets you see nowadays. I
  12. He is coming upto 10 months old and about 21tts only just started him out on the lamp with a few short sessions but he has done a fair bit of mooching around in the daytime cheers
  13. This little fella works around staffs not strictly a pure whippet but close enough. Only just starting out but pleased with him so far atb
  14. We occasionally use the the shotgun when bushing with the terriers but I prefer to run the lurchers personally. One of my brothers old border terriers was ill recently and as part of the investigation had an X-Ray showed up and heart condition and a few shots of lead oooppps never did think he was a good shot lol
  15. Ideation he has a touch of grew and collie in the mix but mainly whippet cheers
  16. Young fella has really filled out last month or so taking shape nicely and has found his feet. He is very keen and has had the odd run on daily mooches nothing intentional. Been out a few times with the older workers, sadly hasn't been much about for him but he naturally works hard to find stuff, bit heart in the mouth sometimes as he crashes into cover and already has a few war wounds for his efforts, not that it bothers him. Glad I bit the bullet and got a runner as he makes the general walks all the more fun and gives the terrier and bit of help in the field. Not really into lamping but go
  17. I should add I haven't lamped a great deal so can't really comment there will be trying the pup back end if thus season in the lamp so we shall see atb
  18. A lot of small dogs look fast because of the fast action. I have a 12tts terrier here that looks electric and goes full pelt. Run alongside the lurcher pup you soon realise the little un is going nowhere fast. I think sometimes I hunt a different species of rabbit than others because a fit healthy rabbit on decent ground is no push over and can shift. I don't doubt there are some flyers around that are small but catch, but percentage wise a larger dog not big but 22tts - 24tts IMO at least where I hunt will catch more. Not knocking those smaller dogs I have a small lurcher pup myself just stat
  19. Blanked again this morning but had a good few hours out from first light. Hoping this little fella becomes a specialist atb
  20. Had a few days haeavy rain round this way to soften the ground and the cover is slowly dying off a bit. Pup around 9 month old now thought he was a bit older to be fair until I did the sums, been out mooching will the others and seen a few bits a bobs but nothing serious. He hasn't grown of any note for the last month or so just put a bit of muscle on and is starting to look the part nowadays at least in my eyes. He is a solid little fella and haven't weighed him of late but guess he has pretty much filled out, 21tts which is pretty much what I would of hoped. He has had a few runs on bunnies
  21. I agree with most of what you've posted there mate, but at the end of the day hancock breeds for 1 reason only...money, he doesnt care if his pups are good bad or indifferent as long as they sell, thats his number 1 priority, he's a puppy farmer 1st last and always, I would rather be without a dog for a year or 2 before I would put money in a puppy farmers hand, but thats just me I agree with most of what you've posted there mate, but at the end of the day hancock breeds for 1 reason only...money, he doesnt care if his pups are good bad or indifferent as long as they sell, thats his num
  22. Interesting, like anything else it's about moderation I suppose. I go out twice a day and on most occasions it is difficult to avoid some action even at the local woods so I have no idea how people can avoid a run until say 18 months. I guess unless they walk the block etc but any pups I have had have mentally and physically needed more than this otherwise they are bouncing off the walls and that's not for me atb

  24. Had the young pup out this morning for a few hours at my uncles farm. Sadly looks like myxi has had an impact already as their was very little about, pup had one short run but was very keen working the hedgerows despite not a lot of scent about. Not always about the catches just enjoyed being out with the dogs and my old man. Ground still pretty hard despite some recent rain couldn't of asked for a better morning weather wise not one for taking pics but the sunrise was pretty special early doors atb
  25. But of you find a couple of smaller lurcher parents with a heavy whippet influence ad that fit the bill and they produce an even litter I think you can be pretty sure what you are going to get atb in your choice.
