  1. yea sure your right there jj I have not dared do the maths. My plots cost 50 quid a year because I am greedy I got 2 but this year was free because I started end of may, spent 60 on net and a 100 quid on a tiller. Say 40 quid on seed and plants because I was late starting. Got all my seed for next year though apart from spuds and a freezer full of veg but not enough variety to avoid buying some bits inc spuds. Next year pretty expense free apart from 10 grand on slug pellets I think next year if I do it right I can be self sufficient on the veg front and at least break even not that i
  2. Amazing how far rabbits go once they go into the cover some times they can end up fields away and a lot seem to sit out in the cover around here. Real needle in a hay stack some times with out a bushing dog
  3. looking forward to see what they turn out next year. Time is flying another couple of months and off we go
  4. My attempt at a repair today certainly didn't look like above thats for sure. Bit of practice though we will get there. Should tangle a rabbit hopefully and as a backup it would probably die of laughter I think I go wrong at the cutting a section out part Well I think between tc's post and the picture here on post 11 http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/39470-repairing-long-net/ then the splicing lines post here http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/86720-splicing-nylon-twines/ I should be fine in the future. The long netting section makes a good read from the beginning p
  5. I have to admit 4 oclock in the afternoon last thing you want is your terrier 6 foot under a tree giving it large on a fox
  6. Picked up some raspberry canes off freecycle this week so used them to fill in the gaps in my new plot ground is still to wet to get the second plot dug over but I keep nibbling a bit when ever I go there picked a few bits for dinner the sprouts won't win any prizes for looks but they taste nice
  7. Seems to be a common theme for ferreting dogs get them out young around the holes. No risk of over doing them as long as you don't make them walk miles. Used to carry mine on site and let him waddle around. One day thump thump under ground rabbit exploded out in front of him and from that day on ferreting was his thing.
  8. Nice pictures there looks a cracking spot. Must be heaven to ferret such a place
  9. Very helpful chap doubt you will go wrong with him
  10. That looks a nice little net tc I can see the benefit of that too. With 3 x 50 yarders in my coat and a load of pegs I look like santa hardly low profile
  11. Same time as I had mine darbo if only we could do it all again
  12. do you not get problems with the terriers digging rabbits (me personally I wouldn't use an earth dog for bushing)but each to there own mate Mine would go to ground on a fox but not rabbits he had a enough sense to know that was a waste of time and that was what the ferrets was for. i remember once he went to ground in a rabbit bury in an old black thorn hedge. I thought this is odd very out of character but it turned out to be a charlie squeezed up tight in there. But he was bought up on ferreting so new what was what.
  13. cheers darbo its like my gardening quality not quantity
  14. Pinched the wifes cocker this morning I keep hoping he will be a useful marker and I think he is slowly catching on. I had him on a lead at the time which slowed him down enough to check over the holes properly. The first bit of woodland had been done by some one else by the look of it. Holes had been blocked with boulders for some reason and people had been digging. But I new of a set of holes tucked away in some cover so I went for a look. The cocker showed enough interest in one particular hole for me to be confident some thing was at home. Entered my hob which is still starting out and
  15. My old JR had a nose like a hound watching him follow a line was a real pleasure. never forget him zig zagging backing and forward when the scent got faint until he picked it up again. If a rabbit bolted from an unetted hole the chances of him losing it were pretty dam low. He would be waiting by a hole some where waiting for me to do the job properly this time Perfect bushing dog he weren't know pheasant fetcher but sure he could of turned to it I asked it of him
  16. sounds and looks a cracker that one
  17. cheers folks I think that was a cow pat but I could be wrong, I did have my eyes tested this week mind
  18. why don't you go to pm so as not to cock up Mitchell1982's thread
  19. Tried a new spot tonight noticed this afternoon the farmer had moved his sheep. I was a bit worried about the street lighting When I stepped into the field it was like day light but I could see the with hedge as a back drop I would be in the shadows so worth a shot seeing as I was there. As I was running the nets out and I could see plain as day what I was doing which made a change. Any rabbits that were out I hoped if they were close they would squat once I was between them or they would be so far out they couldnt see me anyway. Took my time banting the field as it was quite big and I d
  20. Who needs pictures enjoyed reading that thank you
  21. Yea I know what you mean jj we bought second hand chest freezer when the runners beans went into over drive and all the cabbage came at once. But I need to sort my timings out which will come with experience. Also more spacing between rows so I can hoe easier with out any worries
  22. fingers crossed jj do you manure your beds at all ? I see you have plenty of leeks too I wish I had planted more been having a couple every weekend and will soon get through them. Next year I will have a better idea of amounts that I need. In other news picked up some flower tubs from morrison today. About a gallon in size for 99p per 8 but the bundles were actually 10 will use them for the toms next year
  23. Looks a cracker not that it matters and sounds like his working well I would just keep doing what your doing. People all ways said my jr was a bit on the big side for fox but he had heart of lion and would all ways get there one way or the other. Its whats in side them that counts
