  5. Did think about a cocker, however I want a dog to take ratting too. surely I can get a terrier that wont go to ground and just rats. all terriers that will exell at ratting - bushing are liable to go to ground. its sods law . That is my thinking a good worker is a good worker and will take on a rat, rabbit or a fox with equal enthusiasm so you better find a comfy spade to carry if you get a decent terrier
  6. I gave up using onion sets years ago as they always bolted on me. If you nip the flower stalk off and use them ASAP they are still all right to use straight away. TC They won't go to waste that is for sure I also have some grown from seed this year will be interesting to see how they fair as well

  9. Terry, Beetroot s a bit of a fetish of mine I have been growing the white, yellow, and striped beets for years. The white and yellow are not quite as earthy as the red beets. The white is quite robust and grows quicker than normal beetroot and they have the added advantage in that they don't bleed all over the place too. I grow the Chogia striped beet as baby beet lovely for pickling. TC Nice to grow some thing a bit different Allan I like the look of them chogia. Out of interest what vinegar do you use for pickling. I tried malt and proper pickling vinegar last year but bo

Planted some white beet root today and Root Parsley which is like a parsnip. Also some Aztec Broccoli which should be interesting
  12. We did try them like that last year Allan but I think I let them get a bit too big and the wife didn't like them in the pods. But I will give them a go the size you say. The wife likes her veg to be a mush not big on texture lol

Spuds are motoring now had covered them while away in case of a frost but I think we are in the clear now and they are big enough to be ok any way This years planted broadbeans and on the the right my third lot of peas that has been stuffed by mice, voles. They are laying around on the surface even though I buried the edges of the net. Going to soak in paraffin next and try that for next attempt autumn sown beans hanging in there asparagus had run riot while away we had the tough old lower
  16. That's what you call a mark love to see that. But some times you have to make do with what you have. All good fun how ever you do it
  17. That is bang on I went straight into it after school I think there was 4 of us and we got free lodge and 18 quid a week. As you say it was just labour under the guise of trainee keeper. There was a promise for me to go up to north wales and work as a proper trainee up there as I used to buckle down and graft which they loved. Asked me too work one weekend and promised me a free sunday lunch out. Thanks for that but I think I will go home for weekend and do bit of ferreting and have nice beef dinner round the grand mothers bit more appealing
  18. hairs tend to be a good sign but it is pot luck really the ones you least expect will have a rabbit in which will catch you out because you made a half hearted effort of netting up because you didn't think any thing was at home
  19. Hard graft but a foot in the door worth a crack if that is the game to want to get into
  20. Hopefully terry your crops will be ok if not give him a good beating lol I hope so or he is going in my bean trench
  21. Nice one john I had 4 spears last week too. It is starting to take off now but we are away for a week so I hope it don't go too mad. My plot neighbour has been blasting his plot with weedkiller so hopefully all my stuff will be alive when I get back. All my spuds were coming through nice and green so if I get back and they are dead I will know why
