  1. You can get rid of any fault by in breeding even if both of your origional stock have the fault, but you do have to cull without question,to purefy the genes. I always try to remember that genes from both parents divide and rejoin randomly to form whole genes again in the offspring. This is simplifying it but its easier to understand. If you think of a gene as being a whole thing but made up of two parts. It can be DD double dominant, DR Dominant/recessive or RR double recessive. Thats how you can breed together two dogs that both express eg, determination but neither are pure DD for that trai
  2. That mating is bound to produce workers, but with less consistency. All you are doing with breeding in and culling is narrowing down the gene pool to the desired traits. If what you are talking about worked so well getting good terriers would be easy, but it isnt is it. So why not open your mind up a bit instead of going round in a circle. No offence intended. i dont know if youve misinterpreted me but im not slating line breeding, i would hope to eventually start my own line in the future, i just want to understand it more and understand why other methods arent as successful. just a questi
  3. something i dont understand which would be great if someone could explain. example: bitch from a great line, works a treat. dog from another line, good at its job. both lines are tested and are built for the same job and bred through generations. what is different in lining them together, instead of keeping to their own blood? in a way, worker to worker.
  4. If offspring is showing a bad fault (cowardice) then that fault must be contained in genes from both parents, albeit recessive it must nevertheless come from both parents. To rid a strain of that fault the best thing is to cull any pup displaying it. The chances are that the good dog also contained that fault but didnt show it because it wasnt in the duplex form (2 halves). If the good bitch is not showing that fault she probably still carries it but only as impure. You could therefore still produce good workers from the union using the failed dog to the good bitch, but pups from this mating th

  11. I dont know about that imo its good to see a youngster search places as its all part of learning ....and can you really trust an inexperienced Terrier unless its search every inch ? a bitch we used to have would be pulling at the lead from ten yards away or hardly even sniff it, depending on her opinion. She was never proved wrong. So you did run a dog through after the 100% marking bitch h ad said no?I wouldnt, bad practise to me.
