  2. I totally agree with simo on this one
  3. Personally and talking from a preban historical point of view, yes i have seen and do think good runners should pull and floor out in the open. When i said about larger species being caught in gutters dykes and against hedge/fence-lines i was just talking reds and hinds mostly Atb
  4. I totally agree with what your saying moscow about speed wise of the species, but preban when coursing them. I also think it depends on what type of ground your running them on as to a dog/dogs flooring them, as a lot of the larger species are caught in gutters dykes and against fences
  5. Good advice but i would like to add to it. A lot of early success with a youngster can be down to the land your lamping. For example i don't lamp golf courses and certainly wouldn't entertain entering a sapling on the beam there. What would be ideal is ground were the bunnies are a bit green and you can turn them of were there heading easier, for example dry stone walled fields or sheep netting fields and try and position yourself between were the rabbits heading and try and turn it off its natural path were its heading. This will give the pup a much better chance of picking up as it will be u
  6. Is Archie up for stud ? Am thinking an archie x fenton line !!!!!!!!!!
  7. I used to enjoy his writings in earth dog, a local lad as well was friendly with him and one of his dogs. I always fancied meeting him while we was up there, but never got round to it though. But did meet T McPee and he put us on to a few spots for a gallop while we was up there
  8. Is Tom still up in Caithness and does he still keep his deerhound crosses ? I used to go up there quite a bit for a gallop and a mate of mine went out with Tom, he said he was mad as a hatter. They did floor something that night, but my mate said the methods were a little unorthodox
  9. I to have seen the lad from Fileys dogs to, if am right he had a 7/8 grey 1/8 gsd as well as his others and used to knock about with the owner of BOB Also watched Bartons Rooney work in the trials too. But as i said earlier in this thread my mate had a straight half cross that was a handy tool for larger stuff. I do think they are a bit of a specialist dog and are like marmite, you either love them or hate them Atb

  12. We ran my mates doubled up on the bigger species, but also ran our dogs single on the smaller one,s And your right bunnys about the speed wise, my mates was plenty fast enough for all round lurcher work night and day. I wasn't there there one particular night but a very good friend of mine watched the dog on the lamp, on a night out roadsideing lamping running from back of a motor and watched it catch seven long ears and later on mop some bunnys up and said he was genuinely suprised and impressed with the dog. Both speed and general all round ability.
  13. I only feed once a day and i always feed last thing at night and don't have any problems this way mate
  14. Nice dog whats it like grafting, and my mates old dog was heavier than the one in the pic.Cheers Freelance
  15. I have seen a genuine half cross GSD x Grey work a long time ago. Mainly lamping and it was for certain quarry ( i went out with this dog quite a bit, so got a fair opinion of the cross ). Also watched the dog ferret once or twice and had a good nose and was well trained around the sets. The dog was a heavy-ish build with real good strong tight feet and thick jacket, and i have to say the first time i seen it i had my doubts as to it being fast enough. How wrong was i. These dogs are deceptively fast, with a long flowing stride and they can motor. It certainly had enough speed and drive for th

  22. To be honest im settled on the route now ive studied it as much as appears possible from google earth ........distance wise it should be a piece of piss as its only around 28 odd miles.....obviously a lot of that is likely to be boggy ground and maybe having to dodge round the odd loch might put a few more miles on but still 4 or 5 miles a day cant be too difficult surely......the first rucksack i made up last week weight 72 lb......now while i accept thats nothing for these rough and rugged army boys i was told its too heavy for a poof like me whos never done it before.......so ive now got i
