Cutting back the heather next to a reservoir today and me and a mate spots a female Mallard with eight ducklings in tow, I kid you not. I'll try and get a photo tomorrow. Anyone else seen anything to indicate the first signs of spring?

While excersising hounds today in the fells;) , I heard it was THREE books that were due out. "Fox Control", a book about Middletons Terriers and a novel about a fox or something . I'm ordering all three, I've a wonky fridge that needs supporting. :whistle:

Hiya mate. Just because there are lots of holes doesn't necessarily mean there's plenty of rats. Some could be old, unused holes whereas others could be recent ones from young rats or rats that have moved into the area. Seen it many times when ferreting large warrens only to bolt three or four. Have you a dog(s) to mark for you? This will tell you which holes the rats are in or around, for they'll be moving below if they sense danger. It'll be hard work on your own mate. There's a guy near to me that breeds those type. Nice little things. He vets EVERY home that he sells to and insists that it's a working home. The guy is from Germany and his stock have originally come from over there. I see him sometimes walking them and it's a right sight, littleTeckels all over the place. They have noses that will struggle to be beaten, if you don't train 'em right, when they pick up a line you can say goodbye to your dog! Small in size but with the heart of a lion.

I've not seen one since I was a kid. And then I got a crack off my brother for running in to tell him I'd seen a flock of them :realmad: . He thought I was telling lies. Lovely birds aren't they.

Tawnys are starting to call now and are getting territorial. They're early nesters once we get into the new year, late feb/march time. There's a couple over the road from me every night screeching away. Seen a couple of Short eared owls recently too . I heard a pair of Robins tonight at 8.30 singing away!

I'll agree with Baldie about the Pennine bunch but will also say that every area will have its own "team" of rescuers ready to drop everything and be there. People you can rely on. We all know who they are and we would do the same for them. It's always nice to get a dog out alive, but when you don't, it's not just the owners who feel it, but the lads involved in the failed rescue. I lost a terrier last year to ground and I was there for three days digging and probing in a sugar bowl of a sandy spot. Yeah, I heard it. The topic of discussion was "What is the most flouted law in the country? Not wearing seatbelts, dropping litter, using the phone whilst driving etc etc were all mentioned, then this guy comes on :realmad: raging about a fox being killed, LIVE ON RADIO 2. "I'll tell you the most flouted law, it's the so-called foxhunting ban. I've just seen a fox being ripped to shreads on our land". And described exactly as Taffy says. They moved on then to dogs shitting in parks! Who gives a feck? :11: I think he mentioned the south east of the country. It was on the Jeremy Vine show.

Two Lakeland Terriers were stolen from off a building site on Monday in the Ripponden area in West Yorkshire :realmad: . One is a rough red bitch and the other a very dark red 9 month old dog. Two lads were seen taking the Terriers and getting into a white Vauxhall combo van at dinnertime. The lads were wearing Hi viz vests, so they could be involved in the building trade. They were in a shop nearby earlier in the day and the shopowner said they sounded like local lads. Keep your mincers peeled please . PM me if you have any info.

Have you heard any vixens calling yet???? I was out on thursday evening and as soon as we got out of the vehicle we could hear a fox barking. As it turned out, it could have been a dog fox because one came to nosey at a squeak and paid the ultimate price! On the way back to the van, we saw another two about 20 yds apart but well out of range. :search: There's been a couple barking opposite the house this week along a train line. :ph34r:
