  1. Ive got a little 26" 3/4 Grey 1/4 Deerhound, she's just gone 3 and doing well, very loyal, keen and intelligent. I've been toying with the idea of getting a first cross or 3/4 deerhound pup in next year and heard of a few possible matings that could be happening. I'd hoped to breed off my bitch in a couple of years once she'd proved herself in the field a bit more but unfortunately she still hasn't come into season at all yet so we're thinking she may be baron.
  2. I used to do quite a bit of Military Simulation Paintball and always thought that Paint Mines would be a good way of protecting your property. Even better if you were to replace the paint with a strong permanent ink, that way if the intended thief gets away they would be covered in ink which would stain the skin for a couple days at least.. just watch it doesn't splat all over the freshly painted house or sheds! All you'd have to do to find the culprit is walk around the local council estates and gypsy camps and look for the guy with skin like a Dalmatian
  3. Some great walks around that way. A mate off here has invited me down to Grassington the past couple of times he's stayed there, beautiful place with some cracking scenery.
  4. There's a lot of money to be made selling golf balls out of a lake. I saw a program on it a while back and this guy and his mate make £300,000 a year out of it Best get myself a wetsuit if you can make that kind of money then! haha.
  5. We were once out on a local golf course, just after midnight, walking past one of the ponds/lakes and 2 blokes in wet suits popped up from beneath the water! Turns out they were stealing all the golf balls out of the lake. We thought it quite suspicious that someone would drag themselves outta bed at that time just for golf balls.. they thought it quite suspicious we were out at that time just for a few bunnies, but each to their own ey haha.
  6. That's the way to go Hunting loon, get them introduced early and it makes the job easier for you. Stock breaking on an older pup or dog always proves a much more difficult challenge!
  7. Must agree that I think a certain level of care must be maintained to get the best from your dog. Good food, good exercise and good sleep are very important. They are athletes after all..
  8. I've been trying to put weight on for well over a year now, trying really hard to consume around 3200 calories a day. I've got a pretty balanced diet and eat plenty of protein and complex carbs. My weight is constantly up and down fluctuating +/- 4lbs either way and no matter what I just cant break the 10st barrier.. any suggestions?
  9. Got a small tubular heater inside my kennel which is plugged in to a temperature sensor switch, can set it to come on if it drops below a certain temperature and it just knocks it back off when its back up to temp. I only use it in the frosty months as there are plenty of blankets in the raised bed to keep her warm and comfortable through the summer. I highly rate it, it's only a 1ft tubular but does well enough to keep the chill out of the 6x4 kennel.. doesn't seem to hammer the electricity either.
  10. I had issues with my old Saluki cross bitch, both barking and behavioural problems which drove me mad. I'd tried everything with her and the only thing which stopped her barking as much was an anti-bark collar, although as soon as it was taken off she would start again. When she was out she was an absolute nightmare and it got to the point I really hated taking her anywhere. The bitch never really bonded well with me, which was partly my own fault due to me getting frustrated with her easily when she would run off after other dogs and generally wouldn't do as I said (recall, retrieval etc)
  11. Lovely dogs buddy, that young pup looks a beauty. Got a 1/4 Deerhound 3/4 Grey myself, love pure DH's and crosses - keeping my eyes peeled for a nice first cross or 3/4 DH.
  12. You often have to 'exorcise' your dogs bud? not often mine get possessed.. :/ hahahaha (sorry but I had to). My mate had a staffy he used to take out ferreting, great little marker but a bit slow for the bolters. Came in handy pinning netted rabbits down so that they didn't manage to slip the nets though!
  13. I was beating two weeks ago and as we were walking through the woods a little blue rabbit popped up in front of us. Never seen one like it! I've seen a fair few with a blue tinge(grey/blue) but this was honestly blue as F**k! haha. Can't say ive ever seen a white brown hare though, anyone have a pic of one?
  14. Exactly pal, which part of the northeast are you from ? lads who only live few streets away from me are the same and some want me to take them out. If I realy thought they were intreated and serious about the dog game then I would but for these it's about a dog killing stuff which isn't whar it's about to me it's about getting a dog in the best possible condition working the dog to the best of it's ability lacking them full of good grub and everything in between I'm from Newton Aycliffe in Co Durham mate, about 10 mins from Darlington. I've had the same, lads asking me to take the
  15. I'm from NE and I agree with this, good dog lads up here are few and far between. My town is full of these type of muppets mentioned above in the thread. Seems the honest, proper lads up here keep to themselves- probably to avoid having their dogs stolen off the local council estate rarfs! These type of so called 'hunters' have ruined it up here for us by pissing the farmers off so much by poaching, leaving gates open, cutting fences and stealing from their land. I've found it's now near enough impossible to pick up permission as all young lads with dogs around here have all been tarred wi
  16. I was told off my vet that the puppy jabs last up to 7 years as the diseases don't mutate as fast as some i.e. human influenza - although I'm not 100% sure this is correct. I've only ever had them jabbed as pups, never any boosters and never had a dog with any type of disease.
  17. I've got a Deerhound Greyhound bitch and she has great stamina and prey drive. I've not put her on anything with teeth yet as this is her first proper season working, but she's more than capable with 'soft game' so far. Her sire was a first cross who took all UK quarry and was a very game dog, although like people above have said I don't think the DH cross would have the same bite power as a Bull cross. But at the end of the day the poachers of old times used the cross which was very successful for them, but with the way the Kennel Club is ruining breeds genuine working bred Deerhounds and Cro
  18. As most lads said a small lurcher would be best. I take my Patterdale out ferreting sometimes and he is spot on and knows the job. The only thing I would say is you need to be more careful that there are no fox dens etc next to where you're ferreting.. had a couple of occasions where mine has picked up a scent and gone to ground when I haven't wanted him to, but that's part and parcel of owning a Patterdale.
  19. Dave Sleight did a couple of DVD's with his kelpie crosses I believe, might be worth a watch for you (y)
  20. Something to do with slight misalignment of the lower discs which can trap nerves which regulate ovulation - don't quote me on it though im not a vet. I'd just read in a fair few places that this had been the cause of a bitch not coming into heat (especially larger running dogs) and the manipulation had sorted it right out. Cheers
  21. Thanks for the replies lads. Think i'm best off waiting another year and just seeing if she comes in naturally then, like I say im in no rush whatsoever to breed her. Just I was getting quite worried that if there was an internal issue it may cause her health problems in the future, but from what you's are saying and what ive read on the internet its likely that she may just be slow to mature with having the large breeds in her. I'd also read that Irish Greys in particular can be late to come in
  22. I wasn't planning on getting it done before the season as we've got plenty of work to do. Just wanted to give it a try and see if it helps her cycle regularly as up to now with her not showing any signs of coming in I was concerned there may be some problems with her internally, and rather than spend £300-400 for tests and scans etc I thought id try the cheaper option first. I haven't got plans as such to breed her, although some good friends have said if I was ever to breed her they would like pups. She's a very capable bitch coming on very well and if she makes the grade there may be a p
  23. I've got 2 years and 2 months old Deerhound Greyhound x Irish Greyhound who hasn't yet had a season. I've read that some bitches may need their lower backs manipulating to allow them to come into season so i was wondering if anybody has experienced this and was it successful? I'm based in Co Durham so if anybody could recommend somebody relatively local who knows what they're doing it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dan
  24. A friend of a friend bred these, there was still a bitch left out of the litter on Friday. Im hoping to put a Cooklands/Doxhope dog over my bitch once she is a bit older and had another season or 2 working.
