  1. A great little dog and I would say the most entertaining dog I have seen to run rabbits either night or day. But in all seriousness would it physically stand lamping several nights a week in the winter on hillsides and stoney ground, ferreting in the rough pastures and woodland most weekends and running what else presents itself from time to time. I mean the way some people talk about rabbiting "just a little rabbiting dog, to knock over a few rabbits' it makes it sound easy and not physically hard work on the dog, where in reality if the dog is really doing alot it can really test them physic
  2. There is a reason why a lurcher is a cross between a sighthound and other breeds, and those benefits are exactly why I keep a lurcher. Nothing against whippets but they cannot compare to a good hardly lurcher in many ways in my honest opinion. And I am around whippets all the time, lamped a few, and seen quite a few work. Fantastic dogs in their own right, but not in the same league as a good collie cross.
  3. Mate of mine had 20 yesterday and 6 of the does we're in the family way!
  4. Nice job, good to see the olduns out in the field. Regards Sirius
  5. I can't say I have noticed a problem with rabbit numbers this year. Infact it been the best season for a while.
  6. Tomo thats a Great read as dog books go, I have a first edition on the shelf, is not a great copy sadly:-) In a similar vein, no so much hunting is Red Dog all about a true story of a obviously Red Australian Heeler. I find with Hunting books, there are those that are stories and those that are reference, and to be honest the reference ones are the ones I often re read. Of course there are some that fall in-between the two categories, some in a good way and some in a jackanory way Always enjoyed' I walked by night' buy Haggard
  7. I know its sounds nice and generally is fairly Puurrrty to look at. But when the grounds frozen i sure think it makes things more noisy to the rabbits sat below ground. And like others have said not great for get net pegs in and dogs tootsies. Saying that I would prefer a mild frost which clears to a still sunny winters day.
  8. Dont ye worry Reddawn I have 4 traditional nets, use them all the time, they are perfect for what I use them for, light to carry etc etc. This build is just for a specific couple of places, where I need a very long quickset for a number of reasons, i planned to use all the bits I have in the shed to build it, such as the brinded poles.
  9. You often hear about these being the best mornings for ferreting? What are your thoughts and why?
  10. Cheers that makes sense, clove hitch and then just secure with the band
  11. A good book to one person may not be the same to another, so I don't feel i could answer what is the Best Hunting Book Of All time or which is the best one I have read. I Do know I have many in my collection which I would not part with and often read over and over again.
  12. I have a few Brinded poles in the shed and have decided to use them for a quickset. All the nets I have made previously have been magnum poles using the grommets. I was wondering what's the best way to use the castration rings to keep the net in place? Do you just wrap is around the net and pole twice, once the nets in position? Or is there a better way? Cheers in advance Sirius
  13. Thanks for writing that Brimmer. How different things are up north to down south hey. Shallow warrens etc lol we try to avoid digging at pretty much any cost down ere, due to depth, time and its feck off boring. Can't imaging digging all my rabbits it could take weeks. We use the dogs solely where we can but if you want to catch rabbits you have to sacrifice some sport it's the net dog combo every time. I think a good day is judged on how many you miss, and without nets it would be a fair old few, even with the best dogs in the world. Interesting stuff.
  14. No carbon foot print with that bag of rabbits, nice job!
  15. Nice job Brimmer, fair old tally, a good day out ! Strange when i see a rabbit hole with gravel as kick out! dont see that much down ere. Do you just use purse nets mainly?
  16. Even heard tell of big 15ft bits of camo net with a draw cord used in hedge runs for bambi can work.
  17. I guess the more nets you lay the better you get at laying them and what works best in which situation. I have seen them set flat over a hole, end ring in the hole, end ring pushed in the ground, in runs in hedges allsorts. But as long as you catch rabbits don't worry!
  18. Here's some of my pointed faced skinny jills........ This is of my old black eyed white/silver fitch (rip), wish I could get another like her, she just would not produce. Good Hunting Sirius
  19. The reason I favour the whites, albinos and silvers is they are much easier to see when ferreting the hedges and rough stuff also.
  20. Good workout on the calf muscles though having 4lb of mud on each foot for a few miles lol
  21. Lovely job, nice when the youngsters start showing Promise early one. I have had some which took a few sessions to really get going, and second season before they went deep. A mate just sent me up one of this years kits, a little silver mit Jill will try her very soon. Good tally!
  22. No not really its just rained a lot. Had a few hard frosts but nothing to really freeze the ground.
  23. Had a walkout last night for a shine The wind was really blowing up high on the high ground, but the rabbits were not hanging around but we manged 10, it was hard work even the hillside were holding water. Its as if the water table cant absorb any more and the water just sits on top of the land. We moved to another farm on lower ground, and after wading to the fields through the 2ft mud , we hit semi dry land but the wind dropped. The rabbits were easier here and sitting tight and we had another 6 from one field. Had a few out the squat and a few out of hedge bottoms. My dog took two through s
