  3. afternoon all im after a bit of advice about lamps What I'm looking for is something powerful enough to use on a .17HMR needs to be variable power on a tail switch and preferably connectable to a bog standard lead acid battery because they're cheap as chips and it works for me to stick it in a back pack. Ive had a look at a couple quite like the look of the tracer Tri-Star and also the tracer max What do you lot think?
  4. its personal preference mate. I would say autos are more suited to hide use because you dont have to break them to load them, but the balance isnt always as good and so some people really hate them because of this. If I wanted a gun purely for shooting from a hide it probs would be a semi auto though If your planning on buying one dont forget that there is an extra 4" or so of reciever so a 28" barrel handles more like a 32"
  5. I'm not a pestie and I don't want to come across as if im telling you how to do your jobs, but I am a beekeeper and so have some knowledge about bumble bees as well as honey bees because my dad often gets called out to swarms and this year hes had loads of calls to bumbles. but anyway what I was going to say is that bumble bees only live for one flower type and once that plant stops flowering the workers all die and the queen will disappear off and go into hibernation so most nests will only be about for 3 or 4 weeks so unless they are actually in someones house they don't really pose any prob
  6. Im no expert on crows but i know theyre pretty clever and if they see you set up they will clear off most people set up before it gets light and shoot til about 9am but as i said im no expert
  7. woodies have got white wing bars thats all you really need to know after a couple of sessions you'll learn to recognise how they fly and then you can tell what is and isnt from miles off
  8. one of these on a stick http://www.amazon.co.uk/Funtime-8038H-Weazel-Ball/dp/B000PKFJKG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372692444&sr=8-2&keywords=weazel+ball bobs your uncle and fannys your aunt
  9. clays they dont get hung up about the reason for applying particularly you just need to demonstrate that you have a use for one so for you that would be clays and judging by your signature rough shooting/pigeons/rabbits or whatever
  10. you should get it as long as your responsible - I got mine when I was 13 the FEO will ask you all the normal questions about security etc plus an extra load because you're a young shot. dont worry about it though its more like him coming round to explain the laws than anything else - basically he just needs to establish that your responsible and not going to do anything stupid. With regard to gun ownership you can get an sgc at any age at 15 you can be given a shotgun and shoot unsupervised and at 18 you can buy guns and ammo best of luck as I say as long as you are sensible you wont have a
  11. Or you could just sit in front of a bush downwind and not risk breaking your neck/gun/both..... trouble with that you never know which way its gona come and when high up you can see more around you and watch as it comes into range .take it you aint bin up many trees I haven't to be honest and I can understand the advantages...sort of but I do well enough on the ground - sorted out 2 in 3 days couple of weeks back on ground with shottie. Either way whatever works for you it just seems a bit of a recipe for disaster to me
  12. the main reason that the 16" is so popular in .22lr is because .22lr are often used to lamp from a vehicle when a short barrel is easier to manage in the dark with lots of things to bump your moderator into and scare away the wabbits

  14. 8 weeks is pretty standard but I wouldnt do it before that
  15. Sorry if this post is in the wrong place but wasn't sure where to put it What weather forecast do you lot use? Just asking because the one that I normally use hasn't been too good recently but theres not that many that give enough info for the hunter - some only give the temp and whether or not its raining. so can anyone recommend a fairly reliable forecast that includes stuff like wind speed and direction and maybe even moon phases? atb Ratsmasher
  16. It might be worthwhile offering a helping hand with any work on the farm - last year I spend an afternoon weed beet pulling and got 100 cartridges for it not to mention that it was a great help to the farmer. IMO time spent helping a permission owner is time well spent

  22. most people say away from the pattern but that said Ive sot with a great big wide 'blob' of 50 or so dead birds spread out and the whirly right in the middle - the pigeons don't read the book best to experiment start off with it about 20 yards to the side of your pattern and if its spooking them move it or put it away and if its not drawing them maybe move it closer. Hope that helps a bit
  23. the reason that the OP shoots better with an semi auto is probably because they are normally significantly muzzle heavy I bet if he tryed an O/U with 32" heavy barrels hed shoot that well too I personally agree with digweed there because after a while your mount will adjust so that you shoot straight with that particular gun My first shottie was a Laurona far too short and the comb too low but I could shoot it straight because my mount had adapted so that my eye was aligned with the rib - the trouble with this was that my cheek wasnt hard down on the comb so I used to get a hell of a b
