  1. Slowly getting the reloading bits together. Henry Krank has some cheap bullet heads in 17 but only 17gr has anyone tried them? Data anyone? Anyone got reload data for 17? I've got a few manuals but they're not listing 17 hornet. Would rather not buy a manual for one page. My Lee 17 hornet dies have arrived with a number 2 shellholder. Lee says number 20. Any difference? I don't have any cases yet to try. OOps. Wrong place. Move please someone.
  2. When I first started shooting the farm and doing a recce as you do land was bone dry so didn't worry with my front wheel drive traffic. There's just one spot where the pipe from the reservoir has a leak in it. grass over the top, couldn't see anything untoward. went straight down to the front bumper. The farm workers (about 30 of em) pulled me out in the morning.
  3. The friend who's 17 hornet I used is not a home-loader and finds obtaining factory ammunition to be difficult. Fortunately, he doesn't shoot that much and laid in a supply when he first got the rifle, which is a very accurate CZ incidentally. So more fundamentally than saving money you need to home-load for a cartridge like this so as to ensure ammunition availability. If you don't and buy ammunition in drips and drabs as it becomes available then you will be using different brands and/or different batches each time and will waste a lot of ammo checking zero or re-zeroing. It therefo
  4. I agree. The two foxes that I shot with the 22lr I sqeaked in to 40yds. The main reason for the 17 is to try to limit the damage. If I couldn't use the rabbits I wouldn't shoot them. I'm thinking less noise, less recoil, cheapish to load (700 loads from 1lb of powder for 20gr Vmax) and I'm not wanting to reach much more than 150yds.
  5. My thinking is going like this - I want cheap rabbits hence putting in for the hmr. The farmer asked me to shoot the foxes cos they rear pheasant hence the 223. Then i did some research on the 17 hornet. - If I can get the reloading costs down I'll try for a light load for the bunnies and a hotter load for the foxes. If I can do that I won't need the hmr or the 223 but after running around the local shops I'm finding that many don't cater for 17 hornet although they will get it in for you. The reloading costs aren't gonna be as low as I would like but very much doable. Because of that I'm now
  6. Just got the call today. 17 hmr, 17 hornet and a 223 rem. Already bought a s/h reloading kit and I'm hoping I can get close to hmr costs with the hornet. If I can I can't see me using anything else. just want bunnies to about 180 yds. Happy bunnie me.
  7. That's a scary looking animal! Don't like the look of that fox either. Another good pic U. That phone has a good flash on it.
  8. Amazing. You seem to get the best out of it. Don't think I've ever seen a bad pic from you. Well done.
  9. You're clearly a dab hand with a camera also. What are you using U?
  10. Fascinating. Do you pour the powder in with a flask type thing or do you make up some sort of cartridge filled with powder? Are the percussion caps easily available these days? I rather think they would be with all the re-enactment going on.
  11. Thanks U but I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to know more. This is not the place for it but I'd love another post showing how it's loaded, with what and how much. Is the wherewithal easy to come by these days or is it DIY? How does it compare to a 12G?
  12. But if you don't educate us poor heathens as to the what where how and when how will we know if they're "real" or something you just cobbled together? Just a couple of lines for each gun in the pic would do for now :-)
  13. Well done Stoggy. Just posted a variation for hmr. Can't wait for that extra reach.
  14. Well done U. You look like something out of a Hitchcock movie. Come to think of it, You could do a sort of Jack Hargreaves vid with all your weird guns.
  15. Num no good. Copy and paste the url.
  16. Out of my price range but why has no-one mentioned the Sako 85?
  17. My daughter used to do one day a week as a volunteer so she got free tickets. I have one left but it runs out on the 28th, next Tuesday. I'm tempted to go again but my legs are still complaining from when we went last Saturday. Was all good but afterwards Camden is manic on a Saturday night. Looking for a quiet pub for a meal and conversation was a waste of time. Even Wetherspoons was so loud that you couldn't hear the person next to you and that was just from people talking. Had to get the tube to Victoria where we had a nice night in the Shakespeare by the station. Ticket is for one adult
  18. Thanks Paul. At last someone sees the benefits. The back leg is simply an adjustable fishing rod rest with a small bolt through the quad stick. You can get them with a small inner rod or a thicker one. Go for the thicker one. Get one with a turn/thumbscrew thingy that's easy to use. Not much more than half a turn needed from loose to locked up. Allow for a spacer washer between the two so they don't rub together. When fully extended with the rifle level you want a fair amount of rake so don't mount it too high. For scanning you want the leg retracted so it doesn't get in the way. The a
  19. I hear ya BC. Thing is... all those shooters who can put a three round ragged hole up a chuffs arse at 600yds are either sitting at a bench or are laying on the ground. Those that are laying on the ground ain't getting out much in the winter.
  20. Thanks UD. I like your scenario also for daytime. I'm about to put in for two hmrs so I can have a dedicated day/night rig. I have a nice S&B languishing in the cupboard at the moment yearning for a daytime rifle to sit on. Shite for n/vision though.
  21. I got home from my appointment with the speed awareness course at about 9.40 last night feeling that I'd just wasted five hours of my life. To add insult to injury there was nowhere to park the van. Don't even start me off. Suffice to say, usually when I come home from a nights shooting I have to park on the yellows and set the alarm so so I can use a space vacated by someone going to work before the warden comes round. Doesn't always work.... a couple of weeks back I was so fukced I fell asleep in the chair before I had a chance to set the alarm and woke up at 10.00am . Fortunately the warde
