How's the wolfhound breeding going mate
-
Depends what you're hunting but big on the inside means more to me than inches to the shoulder!
-
Well done Gaz.....fair play!

Its when the eggs hatch that's unusual Bill....ain't gonna happen though. As above, you can use the hen to rear a clutch of viable eggs and allow that other pair to rear another clutch themselves. Good luck with whatever you do.

Depends on the work situation Tommy

Get my bus pass next birthday Tommy....might take a train to Dublin, call in for one pint and then home on the next train.....naaahh, one pint's no use to anyone hah!

Nans Pat it would have been late 70's and there were an awful lot more hares around county louth than there are now.

Yeh pal when I think back to those early days when we thought we would live forever I sometimes get goosebumps.....like when people ask about old pix.....how do we explain that thousands went up the chimney on that fateful night after our peaceful meeting was gatecrashed at the border.....don't you just hate party poopers?

Hey Stevie I bumped into the ex wife today, (mine lol), and she was asking after all the old crew...Nibs, Millsy, Matt, Paul and yourself etc. Just passing on the greetings.

BOLIO1 replied to tango's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Your show is one of only two I try to make each year Kieran......unfortunately I had to work this year........more power to your elbow pal! -
I have to agree with that last post...a pal of mine and his wife are saluki judges...she at championship level...what has this to do with working dogs you ask? Well they have a whole treasury of letters and photos of working type salukis from around the globe and when I first pored over these 20 odd years ago I was struck by the strength and unshowlike ( new word I just invented ) make up of the breed once you step outside of the k.c. standard type of dog we all think of.

Before I packed in...pure saluki from daughter of J.L.'s Star and Khan Jihad......bitch by K.T.'s Amazing Pharoah and K.J.'s Magic....bitch by Delboy and Clives Maisie.....

That's Foxy and her sister Rosy.....who would like to tell Craig that he got it wrong with the bitch that ran over 60 matches undefeated?
-
Here we go round the mulberry bush.....as Gnasher says it's a tool....not a one or the other situation.

I'm not trying to suggest foxes as a dog ancestor by any means but the transition of wild arctic foxes to hand tame domestic animals in less than ten generations may imply that these big evolutionary jumps are more common and easier to explane than is commonly thought!

Here's an interesting link, although not wolves....but foxes...perhaps genes through selection? http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CDYQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DmzTcmE-pMLU&ei=CWuiUfyVGoLa0QXB4IGYDg&usg=AFQjCNEhcs8I4SCJSNRAGPSa45ikbKl9nQ&sig2=bma-x1TE1QpRHw5Cnu0nYQ

There may well have been dogs with a bit of something else way back in their breeding also but saluki was the main theme.

Well for that particular job....catching hares on massive land.....I don't think any other type compares. We were lucky enough to attend the Forley cups in person and see in the flesh the dogs which had won through their club competitions to reach the finals. If any other type had been good enough to get through they'd have been there....there was nothing in the rules to say which cross could or could not compete, and in fact the only purebred dog of any type to make it that far was T.G.'s saluki bitch, and she did so on three occasions. It's just such a shame that the labour government crimin

Coursing greyhounds do a different job Lurcherman.....In the lurcher coursing competitions the aim was for a single dog to actually catch the hare as opposed to scoring points based on what impressed a mounted judge. Even in Ireland most of the lurchermen who hunt hares have mainly saluki bred dogs.....its not that they are a one trick pony but most men want whats best for their job. Foxers and ferreters will have a different preference but for some reason we don't hear saluki fanciers decrying those mens choice of bull, wheaten or collie crosses. I guess its like asking why thoroughbreds

i dont know or dont care about coursing events in the uk, i asked about the breed in general as a lurcher x as apose to a coursing dog,so you are saying there a one trick pony is it?only good for hares! From your opening post....." now I want you to tell me why this breed is so highly ranked in the uk"......did you want an honest answer or were you just trolling for an argument?
-
Since you referred to coursing men then can you name a single lurcher coursing event that has been won by any lurcher with no saluki in its make up in the U.K.?
