Just mooched around local today. Marked a few different rats. Some gave us the slip but we got 3 from 2 marks. Flushed birds and hares from cover and hunted rabbits.Got rats in a wood that always holds rats in nice burrows. One of the rats bolted from two burrows and each time we hunted him and marked him in next burrow til we got him in third hole.
First of the chops and kidney from our ½ a lamb butcherd and boxed by local farmer. I do vermin control on the farm and my young lad does work over there helping out so it's great to support local farmers and meat is top notch...
Bit young for hunting yet. Now's the time to get him used to stock, getting through gates and used to crossing ditches etc...... and train him on the recall. He'll start hunting himself when he's about 8/10 months maybe even 1yr. Just bring him to where the game is and once there's scent he'll hunt up.
Ah the westie X doesn't do much but she will catch and kill rats that bolt from marks and she'll do but of bushing sometimes, she likes to wait outside the cover with the lurcher
Great hunting all day. Two terriers, two beagles, a westie X king charles spaniel and lurcher. Pack flushed rabbits, foxes, woodcock, pheasant and we marked and scratched out a rat..only got small bit on video though.
In the 90s Irish terrier was a very popular cross. I'd imagine that a decent whippet or greyhound X Irish terrier could still produce a good lurcher. How many border collies used for breeding are actually working dogs?? So if the Irish was well made and had a bit of drive I think it could still add something to a lurcher mix.
Out today, 3 rats from 2 marks and flushed long ears, rabbits and lots of birds. Dogs winded something in a small bunch of gorse and briars, terrier hunted the line back about 30mts and marked a hole and started digging. Gave him a hand with spade had this lad out soon enough. Pics don't really do it justice, pig of a rat.
