  10. yes ive seen yappers catch plenty.give a young dog confidence catches early on not running it on impossble targets.run it fit. dont run it with a injury.ive seen dogs quiet on rabbits but open up on hares.running woodland heavy cover can bring out the worse in some dogs.say a prayer some dogs yap despite your best efforts and some dont.
  11. so how can blood hounds follow scent that's maybe a fortnight old for miles and miles? sometimes for days as in a few cases in the USA. i do believe there's a lot we don't understand about scent or the way a dog uses it senses just to throw one in on scent how deep can a search and rescue dog locate using scent ?
  12. cracking looking plot darbo , its nice when you can see everything starting to come together and the hard work is starting to pay off ..............atb ..........jim Thanks jim. ive had a look at your thread and yours is a cracking set up.
  13. Cheers terry. each year you get more organised. looking at your pics your doing well. dont know about the pigeon though.
  14. i wait until they start to turn yellow and start to fall. they can be then put in a greenhouse or potting shed and left to dry out the stems will wither off. you can then store them in a cool dry place for eg a shed. they can last anything between 8-12 month. you can put them on strings like onions or split them and store individual its up to you. you can also let them dry out when lifted outside if its hot weather for a few days if there is no forecast of rain.
  15. I knew a ferreting Lad who worked a pure Collie, brilliant marker, good around the nets, and usually positioned himself to catch any that slipped the net. And as above would take Pheasant, a really good ferreting companion he was. Something to think about for the future laurie.
  16. Had a collie from a pup from a farm in preston 1970 my childhood companion were i went the dog followed. when i got into lurchers in the early eighties all the lurchers i ever had had collie in them plus a few with saluki. now iam nearly 50 my attitude has changed the big hopefully numbers dont matter anymore. lamping has lost its appeal. i get a lot of pleasure from ferreting and just going on a mooch. Before my time is up i would like to try a full collie for the ferreting game .going to lack pace for bolters but were i go there are no nice fields its all woodland scrub indusrial waste land.
  17. I have been having a go for 20 odd years in a small way. Most veg you can blanch and freeze. Bag up mark and in the chest freezer. make jams etc. freeze fruit for smoothies etc. have 20 odd chickens plenty of eggs. freeze the rabbits the dog and ferrets get, the odd pheasent. my mate gives me pigeons he shoots. it all helps in a small way.
  18. Bad quality the pic was taken 18 years ago but a nice type of hound.
