quite often the dog you want, and the dog you actually NEED, are very different types of dog, mentally and physically

To be honest, I never gave a dog freedom, I am a bit of a control freak as far as dogs go. The dog may think it is doing as it likes but it must be under control at all times. I had always trained my dogs the same as you would train a gundog. In retrospect it is a fair bet that I did not get the best out of the dogs. It was only when I trained a GWP that the penny dropped with me and I realised that a dog can be half a mile away from you and still be under control. That said as long as the dog is not running wild (under control) and is focused on the job at hand there is no reason why you

a question on the upbringing of a collie based lurcher. how much freedom do you allow on a daily basis? I am talking about free mouching from being a pup, and what impact did it have on the pup when it reached adulthood?

they can pick up "bad" habits just as quick as "good" ones. But those dogs that stay in my mind are the ones whose habits looked bad, but turned out to be a godsend Funnily enough, when I read about collies stalking on here, I always have a wry smile on my face. She put so many rabbits in the bag by stalking and rushing it was unbelievable. Rabbit sitting on hedge, usually my fault for not using the wind properly, and she would stalk it out of the beam and rush it, it inevitably ended up in the bag. TC Many moons ago, I had a heavily collie based bitch. A steady ferreting/marki

very true. Adding something else into the mix just seems to make them a little less complex, knock the edge of that thinker. A good lamp dog needs the physical attributes of the collie x, but not all the brains.

now I do like yon' lad!

A little collie can go a long way! has it only been added the once or on both sides?

I've always had a collie saturated lurcher about the place, for at least 30 years. I love a decent one, but some will drive you around the bend. I never told anybody anything about them, I wished for fancier looking dogs, but coming on here was like going to therapy. My name is Trenchfoot, and I am a colliex-a-holic

England The Game Fair Resurrected!

I heard today that that was mothballed too! -
I'd love to see them, but realistically in all but the most remote islands, I cannot see general acceptance. I predict lead poisoning will be their fate

crashed and burned. The market for these shows has changed, and a rehash of the old recipe will not work into the future -

Colloidal Silver Water Antibiotic
trenchfoot replied to BOLSTER's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I have done a lot of work with silver as an anti microbial. It does work, but not orally. There are some creams and dressings that use colloidal silver, but are of limited use. I did some work with the US defence dept, and the ONLY known anti microbial that they could not create a resistant microbe for was Ionic Silver. And that is available topically, but not as an IV or oral presentaion -
Further Update On New Lurcher Association
trenchfoot replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
When we spoke to Tim, the steering group were lead to believe that Alan was up to speed on the role of the steering group and that he had had email discussions with 2 members of that group. I even asked him openly on this forum if he was aware of the agenda. I got no answer as the thread was locked. All discussions with Tim were based about the vision for LAGBI as a new group. He agreed with the plan that we presented and the path that was chosen. When asked about Alan and the ALC, he said "thats down to you and Alan to sort out". The first thing after that meeting to sort out was a direct con -

Further Update On New Lurcher Association

Hadn’t Trenchfoot answered that pages back? Oh well it would take a while to find it for you so here’s a quote of the report sent to members of the steering group from him after the meeting. “The meeting went very well. Tim was very responsive about the need to be seen to be doing more in support of lurchers (working and otherwise). He also admitted that LAGBI denouncing all the illegal, bad practice carried out by certain lurcher owners was also much needed and to by applauded. As such, they are more than willing to have an article, which he has invited Penny to write on any thing -
Further Update On New Lurcher Association
trenchfoot replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Can one of your steering group get on the Council of Hunting? Would you need a member on the council to make it work? There is one seat for "lurchers" on the Council, Alan Tyers holds that due to historic reasons. If you need to be on the council for a "lurcher organisation" to work is an interesting topic that remains to be answered in the future. -
Further Update On New Lurcher Association
trenchfoot replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
When all this started there was no club so a group of like minded people started to get ideas together of creating a way of getting the CA to represent us (better). From that was drawn up a steering group, who's aim was to draw up a format of a new "association" for lurchers. Alan Tyres reminded people that the ALC was still in existence, to most peoples surprise and that it had a chair on the council of hunting. Alan also offered up some advice based upon his own thoughts. These were taken on board and put into the mix by the steering group. The steering group decided on a working title -

Strangely, due to the mode of action of Silver in its anti microbial activity, resistance cannot happen -

On paper yes, in reality not quite. The molecule is too stable. Now ionic silver is a very different story -
does a specialist need to do BIG numbers when rabbits are aplenty, or do a handful where most would blank?

They aren't specialists. They're just greedy feckers
