Without doubt the rabbits that live around or near sheds ,yards or the farmers house are far more switched on than a rabbit living out on the farm in either cover or a gully .I did have a farmer who reported that he had been trying to shoot a couple / three rabbits that were living under one of his dog kennels ,one bark from the dogs would have the rabbits bolting back and under ground .I've got so much ground to work I can hammer the population in any one spot and still have enough rabbits to not only feed my ferrets but also train the up and coming pups .

I think that's a very good point & something I would totally agree on .

all of the above its just depends where I go on any given day ,winter running ,summer running its all required of the dogs ,but mine aren't champions by any means ,but give it 110% so Im happy to own em.

I've had a total of 4 over a number of years. The first was a bitch and dog out of the same litter, the brindle bitch I lost early on before I could be her fully broken in.The white and brindle dog was a bigger animal than his sister ,he was a cracker, plenty of prey drive & a ton of pace ,he nailed alot of daytime rabbits before he broke his neck when he was about 3 years old .I was simply gutted & decided not to have another for a while ,ten years in fact ,but when I had the offer of a nice small Ex track greyhound I jumped at the offer Whom I lined with a working whippet. I've

A nice read up and a wonderful outcome for everybody involved. Brian still doing what he was bred for is a great story.

With so many rabbits back then a good dog given this amount of work could become a champ. If several rabbits were jumped at the same time the pack would spit & I'm sure that any dog that was no good would be culled quickly .In the later rabbit board days where there were low rabbit population's field workers were paid for 6 dogs other boards paid for more as they were required more dogs on the ground to get the job done ,remember this wasn't sport .

Sorry I cant possibly give any comment of dogs on fox ,NZ has no fox .

This was also standard for rabbiters of the passed here in New Zealand .Plenty of dogs as they had to catch alot of rabbits on any given day ,for hours on end ,then go back out the next day and do it again .Which is a little different than a pet/worker that's only going out at the weekends or one or two days a week. The dogs get buggered, foot sore,,wire ripped but were expected to carry on and get the job done .

Tomo ,I agree ,how would anyone that doesn't live there ,doesn't hunt there ,doesn't own one of these dogs be able to judge & evaluate. One cant apply what one does in his own country onto somewhere else in the world based on one video ,I'm sure its done this way because it works well for them & has done so for many years .

I do ,& i will dig them out .I have about 6 of this cross, different ages ,different litters ,all from a pair of dogs that are first cross beagle x terrier (foxy) which is a type of JR. Its a good cross for bushing in very heavy cover ,great nose, small and fast with the never give up outlook of the beagle ,the terrier adds more catch .

yes its the South Island of NZ,Queenstown in fact which is in central Otago ,lovely spot .I travel the 2-1/2hours for the weekend once a month ,to control rabbits on the local golf course. In the 3 years I have been going there ,I've killed just over 3,000 rabbits off 108 has (240 acres ) .I use arrange of methods of air rifle at night only due to high public use of the area ,dogs, ferrets and nets . -

I haven picked up many on this trip so far ,but the weather and views make up for it .

No ,I note any comments on numbers by the farmer but they lack the skill set required to gage rabbit populations. When I first arrived to work this block back 23 years ago it was common to get up to 30 rabbits in a afternoon when the property was rested for a couple of weeks .This patten lasted for many years ,but over the last couple of years the tally has taken a major dive which is received as good news by landowners ,however there are still rabbits to chase and I don't think given the size of this block (100,000 acres) i will be completely out of rabbits any time soon .I know all the spots

A bushed rabbit was pushed out and up into this hole .The ferret was entered & going by his fur slippers after 1/2 hour under ground ,the rabbit was at a stop end, after a dig of 10 minutes I pulled a good sized doe out ,that added to another doe the dogs had caught earlier further down the gully gave me two rabbits however I'm not sure if these are the two the farmer had seen, time will tell, if not I will have to come back at some later date. "Polly" the 3 month old beagle x terrier ,thinks the dead rabbit is interesting & needs a good checking out

I changed farms and decided to look for a couple of rabbits reported by the farmer ,who were sighted around this hellhole gully full of bush & a native climber.

I doubt she will be very tall at all ,however I do own a brother to the sire of this bitch whos sire was imported from Aussie from a working kennel to give more working blood lines in Nz & help it has .
-
Thats a very tall Kelpie ,I also had a pure black dog but he was alittle taller than a Aussie cattle dog .

He has caught a lot of rabbits for me ,always gives 110% so im happy with Jett who didn't have the best start in life when he found himself in the dog pound after he bolted due to a beating from his so called owner.A friend of mine had bred him and when the one i had died with provo he suggested to give this dog ago. Glad I did, both the dog & I are very pleased ,I enjoy the company of my dogs ,with so much time spent with them ,one has too, why not it all rocks my boat.

These guys arrived a few days early. Sugar had a total of 13 but 2 were still born and as of this morning all the pups seem well fed and had no interest in a bottle feed .This is her first litter. The Dam is 50 % whippet , bird dog ( GSH pointer, visla )and the Sire is 50% Greyhound ,WHP ,beardy. Both parents are workers .
