Is there an instruction book for making my own nets?
stubby replied to a topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I can rememmber ordering a net kit as a youngster, which allowed you to make nets alot easier than that, probably not the way to go, but it was so easy, you hung the ring on a hook, then added 20 or so lengths of hemp line hanging from the ring, and then basically platted them together, simular to what girls do with their hair -

yup, they will climb, to places you never thought possible, stuck an old kitchen cupboard up high in my court, and on more that one occassion caught my jill "foxy" curled up asleep inside, "how the bloody hell" so one day, sat and waited, should have video'd it as it was like something from mission imposible, she climbed onto her nest box, leapt a good 2ft to a door thats on its edge as cladding, just grabbing it with her front paws, shimmeying along this to the rabbit (live catch) trap on a shelf, hauling herself up this then laying on her back on the shelf, using her front paws

In reply to the bit started by ditch, bout the underground system, well In my outside court which was an old concrete walled cold frame next to the anderson shelter the earth inside had been dug out to around 3ft below ground level, I then layed sheets of wire mesh inc up the sides, layed a maze of pipework then covered the lot in soil and turfed it, with the idea that as well as immitating a warren, it would be cool in the summer months, well it looked the dog's danglies, and my two jills loved it, they even dug a few tunnels of there own, but no worries the wire mesh would stop them goin

although ditch's advice is correct, I think if thats a price that is in your budget, then go for it, but then budget maybe another £60 on making it ferret proof as already stated 8x4 boards make a good linning but wood suggest cutting the bottom 6" off then fixing it back on, as mice do like to make the cavity a nest site, being able to remove the bottom 6" at a later date is gonna save time if that happens, if your going to add an outside at a later date, pre cut the hole for a 4" soil pipe, then blank if off using an offcut of your ply, again save's hard work at a later date with ferr

will post pics of my new set up later, some may already have seen/remember I converted an old anderson shelter as my court with an outside enclosure, this is the bit im re doing so i can actually get in the outside section, as for stopping them all running out, instead of using wire on the inner door bit, i used an old worktop off cut, as for cutting perspex theirs 2 easy ways, the 1st is a tile/perspex cutter, but you really need a proper glass cutting table to do it on, the 2nd is with either a very fine tooth panel saw, or the same in a jigsaw and cut very slowly

hiya and welcome, must be something bout heading south, cos my other half is and ex yorkshire lass too,

ditch, is the self plumbing kit made to go on 22mm pipe, always thought they were made to take 15mm (mine are) anyhow if it will clamp onto 22mm, then i dont see why it wouldent still work
-
sorry to hear that ferretlove, as for the kit, fingers crossed that she tends to it, years ago when I kept budgerigars I hand reared 18 babys ranging from 4days to a week old after a fire in my bird room, everyone said they would all die, but only 1 did, feeding them with a mixture of farleys rusk and canary egg food actually had the story printed in a couple of bird mags as budgerigars are hard to rear, anyhow just to say it can be done, so a fert could be too, I did have to take a month off work mind,

so I go down the anderson shelter as normal, to open the door and give my ladies some quaility time (lol) they are normally both there to greet me, looking like light bulbs (both pregnant), well this time one comes out the sleeping box and I can see straight away "the sac" hanging out the rear, panic hits me as I start thinking of local vets, she goes straight to the corner to do her buisness, I start thinking that as its her first litter, maybe she dont know whats happening, and instinct hasent set in, maybe she thinks its a shit? she waddles back to me and I roll her over to see the kit han

Problems catching mystery beast in our ceiling
stubby replied to Madcowz's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
good response ditch, yup your right about the sticky boards, but when working for others rather than yourself, you have to use whats on the treatment report, the reason we stay on site is the distress a "stuck mouse" would have on the public, ie the cleaners, tube staff or other contractors plus of course lifting the stuck mouse, Id say a good 95% die of suffucation as once they stick, they cant expand their lungs, also as you say alot of people put them down and return later, if we were treating an attic or cellar, this would also be our way, return every 12 hour period however the tube a -

sticky boards, that'll do nicely, heres one for you ditch, maybe you'll have an idea we often sticky board a particular underground station that has a BIG mouse problem, the little buggers know that once the last train has left the platform(around 01-30am) they have around 20 minutes to eat the crap left by commuters, before the cleaners start cleaning and they come out in their hundreds, we have 4 platforms all the same, and as doing sticky board treatments, stay on site untill around 04-00am now heres the bit we cant figure mice will run along the floor/wall join in a straig -
willing to spend around £279 so if its £280 its a no no ok, so everyone has to start somewhere, and knowledge comes with time, but the jump from small quarry, ie rabbits and pidgeon upto a fox must have rung alarm bells to yourself, or does it mean using an underlever as a kid, you shot foxes(or tried to)
-
is it me?, or is that jill and young housed in a fish tank?
-
Im looking at getting the ultra multishot for my other half, the amount of shots was the only thing that put me off, but as others have said, if 35+ shots aint enough shooting rabbits, then dont shoot live quarry

I like the blowtorch idea ditch

hi all, just noticed some red mite on the wood of the outside ferts court, no other animals kept around that area, so they are either sucking on the local wildlife, foxes, hedgehogs etc or my jills as both my jills are pregnant I need to completly clean inside and out, but also give a spray of some form of insecticide, now as a pest controller Ive got tonnes of that in my van, only trouble is it will be harmful to the ferts, years ago when I kept budgerigars we used to spray with a bird friendly red mite killer, do you think that would do, or have you guys (or girls) used anything else

so I was right in what I said

BOB, I know the one's from germany that your on about, cos I too was looking into getting one, the one thats quoted as being £300 plus retail, but normally ends up around the £60 to £ mark, so my advice after lots of searching and reading, is ask yourself what do you want to use the scope for? as in what quarry and where, then e mail the seller and ask whats the minimum this scope can be set too, even though the adverts say from zero to infinity, cos the reply I got back was 20yds great if all your shooting is out in the fields, but what if you want to shot ferrals in the shed, or rats
