  1. only because he said CATCH rather than SHOOT/KILL
  2. mustard or vinegar are better, some animals, rat and mice for instance, have a high tolerance to "bitter" taste, ie lemon, dunno if it would be simular with ferts
  3. well, the two biggest brothers in the court, have gone in for the snip today, and of course they got weighed on those big acurate vet scales MANKY the smaller brother,(polecat) came in at 2.20kg SMUDGER the bigger (silver) came in at 2.35kg dunno how to convert that to LBS, but bloody heavy
  4. well todays the day, my two BIG hob are in for the snip, crazy how you worry about ya ferts when you leave them with the vets, specialy after signing the consent form, the bit that says, they may not wake up, so Ive gotta phone back around 2pm and see if all went ok, costing me around £51 each fert
  5. or crushed sleeping pills and raisens (read the book "danny, champion of the world")
  6. If you really are in Eire then you have legal access to a better remedy than shooting, get hold of some 'Sleepy Crow' (alphachloralose) get a couple of hens eggs, pick a hole in the top of each, pour out some of the white, pour in about 1/3rd of a teaspoon of alpha, stir it in with a stick. Put the eggs where the maggies will find them but non-target animals can't get at them and problem solved. again, this would'ent stop non target species, so it would be more of a problem started, than problem solved
  7. better explained mate, but would still have to disagree with you on the fert box, I use a trailer on big fert/rabbiting jobs, that need be to out all day, not wanting to leave my ferts cramped up in a carry box all day, Ive constructed a removable ferret hutch in the trailer, around 24"x24"x48" which means they have room to sleep/stretch/play/eat and $hit leaving them in a box that size, says to me no respect for the ferret, maybe you'll say us brits are to soft and they are only ferrets well each to his own I suppose
  8. im bout 20 minutes away in grays
  9. thats a mouse, not a rat
  10. get yaself some ferret malt paste (most good petshops) stick a little on ya finger each day, they go nuts for it, and i mean nutts, maybe a little click of the tongue, just before offering it, he'll soon learn whats what, then next time he sticks his head outta a hole, click ya tongue and offer him some, he'll come running, mine only have to see the tube, they know what it is... but.. are you sure he aint coming out, cos he knows theres rabbits in there still
  11. no disrespect meant, but the last photo, and the sentance that goe's with it, your talking like they live in it!!!!! I know some people are working on a budget, but surely you could construct a ferret box, rather that use some of them, one's a bird carrier by the look of it, mine are carried in a normal bow back ferret box, if we go ferreting they are in there from 6am, till 7am then in and out while ferreting, then another couple hours on the homeward trip, ok, they may $hit in the corner(very rare) but I certainly aint gonna plumb a toilet in there
  12. was told by deben, that the mk2 was the prototype of the mk3 so that says to me the mk3 has got to be better, not slatting the mk2 though, if its working, dont knock it, I dont think the mk2 has the pinpoint control on it Ive used the mk1 and got rid of it, to buy the mk3, although it takes getting used to, and still have occassions where I feel like chucking it in the next field, it will pinpoint a ferret for me, better than my mk1 ever did saying that, magwitch's mk1 box will pick up my collars signal (slower knocking) so he can tell who's ferret is where,(as he uses mk1 collars) which is
  13. what are we talking here, mk1/mk2/mk3? I use a mk3 with 3 collars, still need couple more collars though
  14. nice looking box, but I'd suggest a wider strap and put more than one fixing/screw in the ends at the box, I did the same with mine, and once it has ferts in it, with only one screw each side, it had the tendancey to rotate, or as it also happened to me, one side screw fell out, not a good thing with 3 ferts in the box and trying to carry nets/spade etc the wider strap, because its suprising how heavy that gets once your in the field also dont forget to drill air holes in it, dead ferts dont catch rabbits
  15. make up a cage like the picture, stops them knocking the bottle about
  16. good read mate, keep at it, that gorse bush of yours needs a longnet run round it, so start reading up in the longnetting section

  19. stick a whole rabbit in a stew
  20. and so are a few hundred other people looking for places to shoot, as outshooting states, you'd be better off joining in the chat, get to know a few people and do a bit of groundwork yourself, to show others you dont want it handed on a plate to you I just did a "google" search of clubs in the essex/ilford area and came up with at least 6 close to you, aint hard also quote that you have full public liability insurance helps, just because your willing to pay dosent say to the farmer "your the right ones" does it, most of us shoot/ferret rabbits for farms and no money changes hands, we have
