  1. My jack russel is a decent ferreting dog , marks, catches hole hoppers ( great when using long nets on hedges seems to be on them if they run the top of the hedge, real quick through cover), good anticipation of whats going on below ground( can't beat the ears cocked staring at hole stance) she's constantly working real busy dog. she was easy to break to ferrets and stock. Downsides..... hard mouthed ( the ferrets get the ones she 's caught), not quick enough out of cover ( although she normally puts enough pressure on them to put them back in pretty quick), a bit noisy as a marker snuffli
  2. Had mine out with the ferrets from a young age 4/5 months let her have a look on the lamp at end of the season around 8/9 months old. Only gave her the odd run and took her with a more experianced dog, she caught a couple on the lamp. But only allowed her a couple of runs, gonna work on walking her to heel ( don't want her to work constantly off a slip) and retrieve, her re-call is pretty good, so when next season comes she should be ready When you say hunting is it lamping, ferrets bushing? I suppose don't give her too much too soon but its hard not too when your as eager as your dog
  3. nice pics ossie and arch, cheers rocky
  4. Cheers Baz She done well end of the season had a couple on the lamp How's your's doing? ATB Kev
  5. Cheers Bill, Like I said yesterday mate I'm pleased with how's she's come on, got a bit of work to do on a couple of things but I enjoy being out with them so I'm sure it'll all come together. Can't wait for next season ,managed to pick up some nice permission this year so she'll get a a lot of running next year. I don't think she's as thick coated as yours ( judging by your last photo) she's around 20" now don't think she'll go a lot more what I expected anyway. Give us a shout if your ever down this way we'll get out for a run
  6. Thanks mate No nowt about around there mate, the terrier went into every bit of cover, but this areas well walked by loads of people. Just a walk out to tire the kids and the dogs out

  8. Few pics of todays walk, there's some stunning views from the top of the tors, only downside is my jack russel loves rolling in all the horse sh*t.

  16. Mines still a young she's had a few rabbits on the lamp and done ok ferreting, nice easy dog to have about and has started to work well with my terrier, she's 3/4 whip 1/4 beddy. Theres been a few threads on here about them put it into the search top right hand corner. I got mine for a little rabbiting dog and I'm sure she'll do fine at her jobs, ferreting, lamping and general mooching/bushing. My brothers got a first cross and she is a bigger set dog not a lot taller ( around 20") she'll start next season. A lot of lads have got them on here and most seem happy with them, but they're not
  17. good post mate to many p c hunters on here if you got a young dog it needs to be out as been said theres milkys out there in feb and the lad who started the post asked would it be ok to give is pup a few runs then every one thinks he is a summer hunter there is nothing wrong in getting a pup out for a few runs on rabbits better to learn its trade now than 5 months down the line and i dont think it was owt to do with running hares as its against the law any time of the year atb. Hi Bill Your right there mate hope the pups still doing well mine started to come good end of season, hence the oc
  18. My point exactly mate, you don't have to kill everything you see to keep the pup ticking over, and the season is getting shorter and shorter so if you stopped and started when you find pregnant does you would hardly ever get out. Although I will not run her next summer as I hope she will have seen enough to take a break. After reading on the ferreting section that people ferret all year round that I don't get
  19. My mate who sadly passed away recently owned the best lurcher I've seen run, gave me very happy childhood memories she lamped, ferreted and jumped like no dog I've seen since, but for me she was the dog that started my love of the game. My mates sorely missed and so is she.
  20. Took a dog out when i was around 17 was around 12months old lovely looking dog was gonna take it on if it was alright, was out with a mate and his experianced dog, let the dog watch my mates run a couple of rabbits and he was pulling like f*ck on the lead so next rabbit i slipped him he ran about 10 yrds then ran around in circles chasing his tail and barking. He stayed on the lead rest of the night and I gave him back the next morning.
  21. Think there's difference between giving a pup a couple of runs over the summer on some easy rabbits and going out and smashing every easy rabbit you see. My pup had just started to get it together end of last season and she'll get a couple of runs over the summer ( after a bit of rain) she'll also get worked more on all elements of basic training. Years ago it was any month with a R in it you could hunt, we were catching pregnant does ferreting in feb. When should you stop now? By the end of next season I hope the pup will not need ( in my mind) to have a couple of easy summer runs and she'll
  22. Looking at getting a kayak myself, got a small boat but like the idea of the ease of 'launching' a kayak. Good luck tomorrow should do well, I'm gonna get out early mon morn try a bit of plugging for bass, try and get some live eels and see how it goes
