  1. Spectacularly failing to answer the question there by BASC. I would say that a single boot to the skull is not going to cause un-necessary suffering. If you have to put the boot in the second, third or fourth time then you might be stretching it more than a little though.
  2. Sorry, been away sorting a move to Scotland. £525 posted and I will send the money straight away.
  3. I have an original Sirocco, bloody brilliant rifle. Only putting out about 9 ft.lb but sub 5p groups out to 45 yards. I've taken it to pieces a few times, and it has a valve to adjust the power but I never would, it works so well as is. I think it could do with a good service, new seals would almost certainly give a little more power, but I don't know where I could send it for tuning/servicing since Theoben went pop.
  4. This is all well and good, but the legislation specifically states that the power limit is relevant for "any projectile". If HO guidance came out suggesting a pellet, it would not be binding on any particular force (trust me, some firearms licencing departments routinely ignore, or (apparently) wilfully misunderstand the existing HO guidance) so there is the risk that in one force area you are ok, in another they can decide to use a different pellet and you might be over. As such, the suggestion really isn't all that helpful.
  5. Aaagh, for some reason this has stuck on the first page, I can't see the rest of the thread.
  6. Don't suppose this is still going, and if so, would you fancy a Hatsan Escort?
  7. Shropshire dan, as far as I know there is no shooting at Dauntsey Guns, and no practical shotgun at Barbury. I visit Dauntsey regularly and used to help out at Barbury.
  8. Anyone who's been around shooting for any length of time has probably experienced similar. If it's not in the back garden it's on your perm. I've had mp5's pointed at me on a couple of occasions, nothing concentrates the mind quite like it. As the shooter, their seems to be an immediate assumption of guilt, that you must be doing something wrong. That said, I like to think I'm pretty liberal in my outlook, and I'd say it's far more likely to be a Sun or Mai, reader that's doing the reporting on the grounds that their particular rag says "guns am bad" and everything written in the papers m
  9. Is there any allowance for people who can't manage the entire weekend, but might fancy turning up and remaking some old acquaintances one one day?
  10. I have a Nikko Sterling range finder that I use a lot. Mainly I use it when shooting deer from high seats, but it's very useful when you set up in ambush for buggs. Get in position and then use the RF to get a definite range from known points. Maybe a gate post is 45 yards, that big bush is 20 yards, the big standing stone is 30. That way you can judge fairly closely how far bunny is away by comparing the distance against the known spots.
  11. Great find, thanks. That'll be a good read one day when I'm not busy.
  12. Yes shotgun, before you can own it "off ticket" you'll need a cert from the proof house stating that it has been de-activated to the specified standards. You can do the work yourself, if you have the tools and the knowhow. Of course, until it has been to the proof house it still needs to be on a SGC (or some other authorisation to hold)
  13. Well... I actually quite like the Lenser. It has great throw and is very robust. It also runs on standard batteries, so you don't need to worry about a rechargeable battery (and most of the ones available are pretty shocking). It's not the BEST torch in the world, but you can get one for the same price as those ones people have linked to now, and my main point in their favour is you can drop them and they won't break (I've cropped all of mine several times, onto all sorts of surfaces, and they are all still going strong)
  14. This is for sale on eBay. Pop along and have a look. The eBay number is 281191989703. Cheers Matt
  15. Whatever you do do NOT suggest the mentor. If they force it on you, then if it's not too much hassle you can accept. How long have you held your FAC for the rimmies? If you've done a 5 year cycle (as it sounds like) then they might be more inclined to offer it without the mentoring condition, especially if you have fired a fair amount of ammo.
  16. Alsone, sorry, I think I worded my previous post poorly. There is no such thing as "too small a round" for a particular animal per-se. I've seen big red stags shot and cleanly killed with a .22LR (in a farm setting, so perfectly legal). My point was that, if you shoot something and cause un-necessary suffering because you have used too small a round then it wouldn't be classed as "lawful quarry" (by my understanding, as the shooting occasioned an offence to be committed.)
  17. You'll have no problem with energy. Try bullets out and find out which ones your gun/barrel/shooting style works best with. Any bullet from a .243 will kill a fox, if you put it in the right place, so concentrate on getting that bit right. If you home load, you can make up ridiculously accurate loads. Which weight you use depends upon the twist of the barrel. A tight twist suits the heavier rounds, a more open twist tends to work better with the lighter loads. That said my Parker Hale is equally at home when fed 55gr VMax or 100gr Corelokt SPBT's and will single hole either bullet at 100
  18. in your area ? i live in yorkshire ....and have fox on .17 ..........since renewing my licence it has come back with the following ......under all calibers it says ...........any lawful quarry suitable for that caliber..........seems the police have put the onus on the shooter what is suitable.......the .17 is not illegal on fox......but wether its suitable or not is your choice under the circumstances when shooting Someone else has probably commented on this already, but yet another case of a firearms licensing department taking an extremely good idea and altering it from the form of wo
  19. There's no grey area at all. The law states that if the air rifle is capable of firing "any projectile" at over the limit it is a S1 firearm. It doesn't say it has to be a readily available pellet, nor does it make any allowance for what you usually use! If the forensic science labs find a pellet that it fires over the limit then you are going to get done for it!
  20. Wonder if he'd do a tune up on a Theoben Sirocco? My old girl really needs some TLC! Not sure there's much you can do with a gas ram though.
