  1. Thanks for the reply Beast. Not something I've come across before.
  2. Surely the reduced size is a strong indicator of inbreeding, rather then evidence of any specific strain? I know of a captive herd in Cumbria that are similar, weedy little things, mainly as nutrition and culling has been historically neglected. I believe things have improved more recently though. Novice
  3. What species if tuna? Interesting to hear there's a few about. Would have thought they'd have been scooped up by the commercial lit, intentionally or otherwise. Novice
  4. Any history to it? Whereabouts in the country is it from? Novice
  5. Did they just let the crop grow round it? Looked like a fresh stubble field as I drove past at 69mph ? Novice
  6. Anyone owning up to the green and silver Subaru legacy stuck up to its axles on a stubble field right up against the M40 just south of the Chiltern gap... Novice
  7. Pretty sure I've seen similar pics on another forum recently which were taken abroad following a driven hunt specifically for fox. I presume those numbers are achievable if enough forestry is pushed out, especially where the fox are controlled otherwise. He's certainly got the right response if he was on the windup. Novice
  8. Recently borrowed a copy of his mink trapping DVD. A cracking piece of work, really useful information. Novice
  9. Possums. Released as a feral and built up to plague proportions. Got a couple of interesting books by fellas who used to make good money trapping them for the fur trade back in the day. Novice
  10. Just weighed it. 2lb9oz, which I understand is about average for an adult male mink. Very surprised as it's a very big animal. I'd love to see and handle something a lb or more bigger, must be very impressive. Although it's possible this one would have been a fair bit heavier in the autumn after a good summer's feeding. Thankfully he won't get that opportunity anymore. Novice
  11. I caught a thumper myself this week but I'm afraid posting pictures is a bit beyond me. Out of interest, could anyone give some weights of the largest dog mink they've caught? I intend to make a point of weighing this one as I can't imagine they get much bigger, although time of year will obviously see a bit of variance in weight of an individual animal. Novice
  12. I'm pretty sure the springer trap is specifically names in the relevant legislation alongside the fenn version as being approved. Should be no real difference in performance. Novice

Interesting that the legislation doesn't apply in NI. Also interesting that various species are escaping and being accounted for. Novice

Could you put up a picture from that book please. The one where the tabby looking creature is up on its back legs and the domestic cat standing up as a comparison? That is the picture in all the years since I read that book which keeps coming back to me as being very hard to explain Will try when I get a min. Felt that pic was just a large adult feral rather than a juvenile anything else TBH. Novice

If you read that book I'd suggest from the descriptions that quite a few were. Close encounters with cats that didn't immediately back off. I'd be wary of a powerful dog I didn't know so understandable why no-one was keen to go tickling kitty under its chin. As I say, fair likelihood of at least some cats escaping when they were more prevalent, but not in more recent times. Novice

Fairly sure quite a few people had them, pretty much a free for all for those who had the money or inclination to have one. Given the idiots who have some bull breeds these days, imagine if they got their hands on exotic cats! By way of example, I know of a retired vet local to me that still owns a bsa .22rf that he used to dispatch a lioness in a garden near where I live. It was kept in an enclosure as a pet but had injured the homeowner's child when some boisterous play got out of hand and the vet was called to dispatch it. The rimmy did the job at very close range! He used the same rif

I bought the "Cat Country" book off the back of this discussion and read through it yesterday. Obviously dated, but given that it focuses on the 70s into early 80s, I'd say a lot of the sightings could be genuine as that would have been the period some cats would have been turfed out following the legislative changes. Not very relevant nearly 40 years later though. Having said that, some of the locations near Inverness are known to me and a good friend lives in Cannich where the puma was cage trapped. Not much in the way of genuine sightings up that was now by all accounts. The book

Greyman, have you thought about using some of the cat specific lures available in the USA in front of your camera traps? Might be a bit less conspicuous than half a dead deer but is likely to have plenty of pulling power if they're passing through the area. Just a thought. Would love for you to obtain further evidence to confirm your beliefs. Novice
  20. Ah right. Thought I was looking down on the top of its head more. Cheers Novice
  21. Is that a tick on its forehead? Never really thought about rats being susceptible to picking them up. Novice
  22. I'm guessing they're wild bucks? Very nice to see mature animals like that, especially in daytime. Novice
  23. The MOD have their own in house stalking club so I imagine it's all sewn up on there. Novice
  24. Not sure if this list has appeared on here before but thought it might be of interest. Some amazing variations, although I imagine there would realistically be a chance of only bumping into a handful in the UK http://livingwithfoxes.weebly.com/red-fox-colour-mutations.html Novice
