  1. Cheers for the replies fellas. I am on a bit of a budget as my girlfriend and I are saviing for a house and I don't earn a fortune. I was hoping to get a rifle, scope and rings for around £500 - £600. Am I dreaming or is it possible? I don't mind second hand but I am worried about buying a shot out rifle or a scope that has been bashed to bits.
  2. Can anyone give me some pointers as to a decent scope for use on a .243 or .308? I'm lloking to getting into some stalking and from what I've been told, you spend most of your coin on a decent scope and then lash out on your rifle. Is it worth buying second hand? Any favourite makers or specifications?

    SHOWS

Did anyone see the puppy class at Wolsingham? A mate of mine won with a little rough coated grey bitch. She will be defo working when the time comes. I guess Al has the right idea in that the shows are just a chance to meet mates, enjoy the weather and take some pride in his dog. Bloody big shield that he won though :11:
  4. I know that it doesn't have to be a professional person, but they are the examples that are given. Am I right in thinking that they have to have known you for 2 years? You certainly can't have a member of your family as your referee.
  5. It's bollocks mate :11: That's for rifles only, bigger the calibre the bigger/more suitable* the land needs to be. The SGC application progress isn't that much hastle mate, they'll probably ask you what you want it for i.e. vermin control/game shooting/clays etc, but it'll be no problems if you have permission somewhere. I was 15 when I did mine and did all the paperwork myself apart my dad signing it so you shouldn't have any problems. *I.e. lots of good backstops <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How come you were allowed to use your dad as your referee? As far as I'm aware your ref
  6. When you guys say 'chiller' do you mean that you have one at home or do you take them to a gamedealer or your equivalent over there?
  7. Well I must be super lucky because one of my first catches in my fenns was a polecat ferret. I assume it was a ferret and not a wildy as I'm not aware of there being any wild ones in my area.
  8. I was reading the Field in a newsagents a few months ago and it stated in there that the roe deer is the fastest British land mammal. I was a bit suprised because I always assumed that hares were the fastest.
  9. Looks like that second rabbit had already had a near miss judging by the hole in its ear :11:
  10. Your right JD, its not natural. Human activities can create conditions that are more favourable for certain species to the detriment of others. It is our responsibility to try and correct this balance. People like Odie don't seem to be able to grasp this fact a lot of the time. I reckon you would be hard pressed to find any 'pristine wilderness' in the UK that hasn't been shaped by humans. Sometimes its as if they think that after the ice age receeded the hedgerows and coverts were already in place!!!!!!! :11:
  11. What are you planning to use it for? I have a tracer compact, a clulite 6 vot 500 000cp and a lightforce handheld 1 mil cp. These cover most eventualities. I reckon a lightforce variable model would be the way to go then you can wind it down for close range stuff
  12. A mate of mine has one, at least thats what he says it is but can't be sure as he bought her as an adult. Shes game enough, I've seen video of her drawing fox. She seems to naturally take her fox across the throat, same for deer as well. I think this trait is more down to the individual dog rather than her breeding but I don't really know. It saves her getting bitten up anyway. He also uses her for lamping. Hes more than happy with her. She is in pup to a Weaton Greyhound at the moment.
  13. Whats the name of the fishery Rob??????
  14. I've got one in .22. Don't use it much as I now have a rapid 7. They aren't bad but the stock is a little short for me. I looked into getting one of the new stocks with a raised cheekpieceand direct from BSA they are about sixty quid so I am thinking about it. I've had it tweaked a bit by Sandwell Fieldsports a few years ago. They put in their own internals and a two stage trigger, much better than the original unit. Not a bad gun for the money but not a patch on the precharged kit.
  15. Cheers Pete, I will ket on to it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm sorted for waders now. Got some Wychwood breathable chest waders off ebay for £45 quid. They have a zip out fleece liner as well. Cheers for the help Pete.
  16. Cheers Pete, I will ket on to it.
  17. I know very little about snaring so don't know if this is a stupid question , but how were you able to release the leverets? Do you put a stop on the snares to prevent them tightening down and choking them?
  18. Cheers pete. I will hunt around to get the best deal. I am keeping my eye on ebay as well. Do you need to wear thermals underneath them or are they warm enough?
  19. I am thinking about getting a pair of waders and was wondering if anyone can recommend any brands, materials etc. I was thinking about getting pair of breathable chesties as they look the most versatile and hopefully mean that I won't be sweating my a**e off when then sun comes out. Any views would be appreciated. cheers
  20. A mate of mine reckoned that his dogs treed one in Delamere Forest in Cheshire. I've never seen one but I'm inclined to believe him as he knows his stuff.
  21. Does anyone think that it makes a difference what material a larsen is made out of? The reason I ask is because I have one made totally out of weldmesh and I can never catch my first call bird. I've tried eggs, rabbit, chicken carcasses both in the garden and out in the fields. My mates have larsens made out of wood and they don't seem to have any problem catching without a decoy. I was thinking that the maggies may be reluctant to land on the mesh. Does anyone have any views or am I doing something wrong?
